Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe will go up against each other on Tuesday (January 16) in the second T20I of the three-match series in Colombo. Coming to bat at No. 4 Raza slammed 62 off 42 balls laced with five fours and two sixes to take his side to 143/5. Then he had a dream spell with the ball claiming 3/13 although it all went in vain. Coupled with Dasun Shanaka’s unbeaten 18-ball 26 Sri Lanka rode on Angelo Mathews’ 38-ball 46 to get the job done on the last ball of the contest. Wanindu Hasaranga as expected lived up to his lofty expectations whereas Maheesh Theekshana took two crucial wickets as well. Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe are set to lock horns in the second T20I of the three-match series on Tuesday January 16. The R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo will host the clash. The first T20I in Colombo turned out to be an absolute cracker as the match was in the balance until the last over. With 14 runs to win off the last over Dushmantha Chameera held his nerves to take his team home. Sikandar Raza almost pulled off a win for the visiting team single-handedly but his efforts fell short. He scored 62 runs off 42 balls with five fours and two sixes after which he finished with figures of 4-0-13-3. Angelo Mathews who made his comeback in T20Is after almost three years won the Player of the Match award. He scored 46 runs off 38 balls under pressure with the help of five fours and a six. After being put in to bat first Zimbabwe scored 143 for the loss of five wickets in 20 overs. Sri Lanka chased down the target off the last ball to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The third and final game of the ODI series between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe will be played on Thursday. This high-octane clash will be played at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Sri Lanka lead the series by a 1-0 margin. The first game was washed out due to rain. The second match was a thrilling one and the hosts managed to emerge victorious by two runs to take an unassailable lead in the series. Batting first Zimbabwe’s batters got starts but failed to convert them into big scores. A lack of partnerships resulted in them getting bundled out on 208 in the 45th over. Skipper Craig Ervine was the lone fighter for them as he scored 82 off 102 balls. For Sri Lanka Maheesh Theekshana was the standout bowler. He bowled beautifully and registered figures of 4/31. Dushmantha Chameera and Jeffrey Vandersay also grabbed a couple of scalps each. In reply Sri Lanka kept losing wickets at regular intervals but Janith Liyanage held the innings nicely from one end. He scored 95 but his departure helped the visitors get back in the contest. The game went down the wire and Chameera (18*) and Vandersay (19*) played brilliantly to take the Lankans home. Sri Lanka lost eight wickets but managed to cross the line with six balls to spare. Richard Ngarava was brilliant with the ball for Zimbabwe and grabbed a fifer but it wasn’t enough as they failed to defend the total. Zimbabwe will be looking to get over that loss quickly and bounce back in the final game of the series. The Lankans meanwhile will look to finish on a high and clinch the series by a 2-0 margin. Sri Lanka continue their dominance over Zimbabwe in the 50-over format. Pitch Report R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo offers equal assistance to the batters and the bowlers. The batters will have to spend some time in the middle before they can start taking down the bowling attack. The spinners will get plenty of assistance from the surface. He might not make it to the XI though as Nuwanidu Fernando is likely to open alongside another comeback man Avishka Fernando. Both are talented batters and with likes of Sadeera Samarawickrama Charith Asalanka and captain Mendis forming a strong middle order Sri Lanka would be looking to deliver strong performances with the bat. However the focus will be on Dasun Shanaka who has been removed as captain has been under criticism lately for his inconsistent performances. On the bowling front Akila Dananjaya has made his comeback into the national side but he might miss the cut in the XI with presence of Theekshana and Dunith Wellalage in the squad. Dushmantha Chameera is also fully fit and raring to go while Dilshan Madushanka would be looking to continue his great form from the ODI World Cup in India.
