India is to Asia Cups what Australia is to World Cups. Even if they never have taken it for granted their berth in the title clash is almost always a given. The competition is barely to see which opponent can put up a fight to challenge the norm. Duly India have made the ninth straight final and will go into Sunday's summit clash as overwhelming favourites once again. However a spirited Sri Lanka stand in their way of claiming the subcontinental bragging rights for the eighth time in nine attempts. India have barely been hassled on their path to the final as they mercilessly swatted aside all competition. Whether it were the two entrants from the Qualifying competition who barely stood a chance in the 200+ and 180-run chase or the more experienced opponents in Pakistan and Bangladesh who were both crunched comprehensively in sub-par run-chases. That the statement 10-wicket win in the semifinal against Bangladesh - the only team Harmanpreet & Co. have lost a final to in Asia Cup T20 history - wasn't even with their strongest XI on the park just underscores India's form at the moment. With D Hemalatha backed at no. 3 consistently - and even afforded an opportunity to open in lieu of Smriti Mandhana against Nepal - India's bating department has looked settled and is among runs. The bowling led by highest wicket-taker of he competition Deepti Sharma has functioned like a well-oiled machine. Among the biggest gains for India in this tournament has been the crucial game-time Shafali Verma and Renuka Thakur needed to find their mojo back and both have notched up a Player of the Match each to mark their return to form. The late entry of left-arm spinner Tanuja Kanwar and her miserly spells in the three games thus far are a testament to India's preparedness for the World Cup that is now just two months away. The frontline squad is in form and the immediate bench has given management the always pleasant problem of plenty. That's hardly something Chamari Athapaththu would want her team to focus on. Hosts Sri Lanka were the only other team to not drop a game en route the final and they have had positives aplenty to build on as they look to challenge India's stronghold. Sri Lanka's success in the competition as has been the case in the recent resurgence at the highest level too has come on the back of its prolific run-maker that is their captain. Athapaththu has three Player of the Match awards in Sri Lanka's four games including the semifinal. However the contributions around her have continued to grow. Against Bangladesh in their tournament opener it was fellow opener Vishmi Gunaratne (51) and Harshitha Samarawickrama (33) who stepped up when the skipper fell early. Km punk live match. Gunaratne played a supporting hand in their 10-wicket win over Thailand too. When Athapaththu departed for 63 in the semis leaving Sri Lanka with 21 more to get in 20 deliveries the lower-middle order stepped up to eke out a penultimate-ball win by three wickets and send Pakistan packing. Anushka Sanjeewani the wicketkeeper-batter has now twice made brisk contributions under two very different circumstances once when the skipper had laid out a solid platform and then with the final spot on the line when the captain needed someone to absorb some pressure at the other end. Led by the tournament joint third-highest wicket-taker Kavisha Dilhari the spin unit is slowly finding its rhythm too and will be banking on the home conditions to keep the on-roll Indian batting in check. Last edition's final between the same sides turned out to be a one-sided dud affair. Iqbal Sports Live. With an eager home crowd for support for this time Sri Lanka would be keen to not let that repeat at least as they aim to become only the second team to end India's subcontinental supremacy. ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is just around the corner and teams are seizing the opportunity to fine-tune their strategies in the warm-up games. The hosts West Indies are brimming with confidence after a clean sweep against South Africa in their recent T20I series and now face Australia in a practice match. Batters like Brandon King and Johnson Charles were in superb form during that series while Nicholas Pooran Andre Russell and Shai Hope had solid seasons in the Indian T20 League but will be looking to eliminate any lingering rust. Interestingly their spin attack appears particularly potent this time with Gudakesh Motie and Akeal Hosein leading the charge while Roston Chase and Romario Shepherd will be pivotal with their all-round skills. They need more consistency from their pace attack with Alzarri Joseph and Shamar Joseph bringing fiery speed and Obed McCoy and Russell providing effective variations in these conditions. Australia on the other hand have already played a warm-up match defeating Namibia despite fielding support staff due to a short squad. David Warner’s explosive fifty was a highlight and captain Mitchell Marsh made a successful return from injury. With Travis Head who was exceptional in India recently Cameron Green Tim David and Matthew Wade their batting lineup is formidable. Pat Cummins who guided Hyderabad to the Indian T20 League finals will be key with both ball and bat. His leadership and experience are invaluable. Mitchell Starc fresh off winning the Indian T20 League with Kolkata was outstanding in the knockout stages earning Man of the Match in the final. Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell have been somewhat inconsistent and will aim to find their form before the group stages begin. Ashton Agar and Adam Zampa will be their main spinners and are expected to thrive in these conditions. While the outcomes of these warm-up matches might not hold great significance both teams will aim to be competitive and build momentum heading into the main tournament. A determined run-chase from Bangladesh in the first ODI saw them through to a convincing victory. After losing the T20I series hosts Bangladesh were off to a good beginning in the ODI series winning the opener by a comfortable 6-wicket margin. Their bowlers kept things tight and restricted Sri Lanka to 255. In response skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto's magnificent century and his unbeaten 165-run stand with Mushfiqur Rahim guided Bangladesh over the line. Bangladesh would look to continue the momentum. For Sri Lanka this is their only chance of drawing level. Will they be successful in making it 1-1? Just a day after Najmul Hossain Shanto's superb captain's knock steered Bangladesh home in a tricky run chase after the Sri Lankan pacers broke apart their top order the two teams are set to face each other in the second ODI of the three-match series at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram on Friday (March 15). Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando gave an excellent start after Kusal Mendis opted to bat first on winning the toss. Both failed to convert the starts to a big one courtesy of Tanzim Hasan Sakib who grabbed three quick wickets. Mendis steered in the innings with a half-century and got good support from Janith Liyanage. Who has now hit three fifties in his young career kept Bangladesh at bay in the middle overs. Shoriful Islam and Taskin Ahmed got the home team back in the game by dismantling the middle and lower order of the opposition including the wickets of two well-set batters and sharing 6 wickets between them. Mehidy Hasan Miraz kept things tight with a tidy spell of 10-0-33-1. There was no fight shown by the Lankan lower-order and hence they were bundled out for 255 in the 49th over throwing away the good foundation that the top and middle order set for the rest of the batters. Dilshan Madushanka and Pramod Madushan went bang bang bang and reduced Bangladesh to 23/3 in no time. Skipper Shanto who was searching for some runs led from the front and smashed an excellent century and got able support from experienced Tigers Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim as the hosts tackled. The spin threats of Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana to chase down the target with 6 wickets and 5.2 overs to spare. Tanzim Hasan Sakib walked off the field after bowling 8.4 overs having concerns with his fully strapped right leg. There is no recent update about the pacer's fitness. The strategy to bat first backfired on Sri Lanka but they would have learned their lesson. The toss is in nobody’s control though and if the dew tonight is as heavy as it was in the last game things will certainly favour the chasing team. Some of the Sri Lankan batters got off to starts in the last game but didn’t convert them into something substantial. T20 is the flavour of the season and we will see a lot of it in the next few months because of the World Cup scheduled in June this year. These two teams - Bangladesh and Sri Lanka - have players already in T20 mode. Bangladesh players are coming into this 3-match series on the back of BPL while Sri Lanka recently beat Afghanistan in this format. The home side has a new look to it with the experienced trio of Tamim Shakib and Rahim not available for various reasons. Najmul Shanto will lead this rather young side as they start their preparation for the main event. Sri Lanka too have a change in captaincy for the first two games. Regular skipper Wanindu Hasaranga is suspended for the first two games and Charith Asalanka will lead the side in his absence. The Lankans played some exciting cricket against Afghanistan and would look to carry that into these three games. Anamul Haque needs 15 runs to complete 2000 runs in international cricket. It was only last Friday (March 1) that Najmul Hossain Shanto & Co. ended their respective stints at the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2024 but so tight is the cricket calendar that only three days later hosts Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will face-off in a three-match T20I series beginning in Sylhet. All three T20Is – the remaining two fixtures are on March 6 and 9 – will be played in Sylhet. This is the road to ICC T20 World Cup in the USA and the Caribbean and it’ll be crucial for the teams to gather and then sustain momentum heading into the mega-event in June later this year. Star Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan will not be in action due to eye issue. Mehidy Hasan Miraz the vice-captain of the T20I team has been dropped. Meanwhile Mahmudullah has returned to the T20I side after more than a year having smashed 237 runs with two fifties at a healthy strike-rate of 134.65 in the recently-concluded BPL season. Anamul Haque Mohammad Naim Taijul Islam and Taskin Ahmed all of who didn’t feature in Bangladesh’s previous T20I assignment in New Zealand (in December 2023) that ended 1-1 have been brought back. Mystery spinner Aliss Al Islam who earned his maiden call-up to the national team after. A successful campaign with Comilla Victorians in the BPL – he bagged 9 scalps at an impressive economy of 7.17 – has been ruled out with a finger injury. Jaker Ali has been drafted into the squad as Aliss' replacement. Jaker also featured for the Comilla-based franchise in the BPL. He hit 199 runs at a splendid strike-rate of 141.13 and at an awe-inspiring average of 99.50. Bangladesh will know they need a complete team performance against Sri Lanka who’ll be high on confidence after winning successive T20I series against Afghanistan and Zimbabwe. Charith Asalanka will be the stand-in Sri Lanka skipper in place of Wanindu Hasaranga for the first two of three T20Is. It’s pertinent to note that Hasaranga was suspended for two T20Is by the ICC following his outburst against umpire Lyndon Hannibal in a T20I against Afghanistan. Hasaranga who was also fined 50 per cent of his match fee will return as captain for the final T20I on March 9. In Hasaranga’s absence Akila Dananjaya and Maheesh Theekshana are the other spinners in the squad. Opening batter Avishka Fernando has come in for the injured Pathum Nissanka. Sri Lanka will miss the services of Kusal Perera who is down with a respiratory infection. Niroshan Dickwella who last played for Sri Lanka in March 2023 has been named Perera’s replacement. Bangladesh the home team would’ve to be mentally ready to handle the pressure of expectations better. Sri Lanka on the other hand would bank on their batters and spin department to produce a special performance. The three T20Is could well be about one of the teams setting the bar so high that the other would have extra motivation to overcome the challenge thrown at them. Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe will go up against each other on Tuesday (January 16) in the second T20I of the three-match series in Colombo. The first T20I was a nail-biting thriller in which Sri Lanka eventually won by three wickets. Zimbabwe skipper Sikandar Raza had an outing to remember last time when the two sides met at the same venue. Coming to bat at No. 4 Raza slammed 62 off 42 balls laced with five fours and two sixes to take his side to 143/5. Then he had a dream spell with the ball claiming 3/13 although it all went in vain. Coupled with Dasun Shanaka’s unbeaten 18-ball 26 Sri Lanka rode on Angelo Mathews’ 38-ball 46 to get the job done on the last ball of the contest. Wanindu Hasaranga as expected lived up to his lofty expectations whereas Maheesh Theekshana took two crucial wickets as well. Sikandar Raza almost pulled off a win for the visiting team single-handedly but his efforts fell short. He scored 62 runs off 42 balls with five fours and two sixes after which he finished with figures of 4-0-13-3. Angelo Mathews who made his comeback in T20Is after almost three years won the Player of the Match award. He scored 46 runs off 38 balls under pressure with the help of five fours and a six. After being put in to bat first Zimbabwe scored 143 for the loss of five wickets in 20 overs. Sri Lanka chased down the target off the last ball to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
