The New Jersey Devils were able to break their losing streak tonight as they overtook the Carolina Hurricanes 7-4 and brought the Prudential Center a win for the first time since January 6th. The game did not get off to a great start for the Devils when they let in two goals early in the first period, but they were able to turn it around by the time we reached the first intermission and bring it to a tie game at 2-2. While a lot of the issues in tonight's game started with the lack of defense by the Devils, they slowly but surely were able to get back on track, and began to seem like a truly competitive team in the second period. As the Canes defense began to crumble, the Devils started getting stronger and landing the puck in the back of the net multiple times within only a couple of minutes. The top 3 stars of tonight's game were Jack Hughes, Andreas Johnsson, and Nathan Bastian, though Ryan Graves is an honorable mention with 3 assists tonight. Tonight is the first of back-to-back games, as the Devils will play on January 23 at 7pm against the Kings. Until then, here's Sam Bohrer with the postgame report. The Islanders persevered through three periods of play only to fall 4-3 to the Vegas Golden Knights after a shootout. Robin Lehner returned to the island tonight for the first time since being traded, and ultimately made some great saves in an overall solid performance that brought the Knights to the win. The Long Island team fought all the way to the finish, holding a lead until the final minute of the third period, with a solid effort by Sorokin and the Islanders defense to earn a point, albeit another somewhat disappointing one, in their latest match to bring their record to 8-12-6. Samantha Bohrer recaps the Islanders' valiant fight, Barry Trotz’s vaccine statement slip up and the brand new NHL decision to postpone cross-border travel for teams and more in this postgame report. Last night, the New York Rangers hosted the Vegas Golden Knights in an absolute thriller that had a bit of everything. Howden got the Knights on the board in the first period. Mika Zibanejad answered for New York 17 seconds into the second and then Chris Kreider put up a power play goal at the 10:25 mark. The Rangers held onto the 2-1 lead until 14:44 in the third frame when the Knights forced a tie that stuck long enough for OT. The game came down to a shootout in which Jonathan Marchessault scored the game winner, making the final the Vegas Golden Knights 3, the New York Rangers 2. Colin Loughran recaps all the action in this postgame report. FOLLOW US: Twitter: @wfuvsports Instagram: @wfuv_sports Facebook: WFUV Sports YouTube: WFUV Sports
The New York Rangers lost in obvious fashion on Wednesday night as they were easily handled by the Colorado Avalanche. With Igor Shesterkin injured and Alexander Georgiev taking a needed day of rest, Adam Huska made the start in net for the Broadway Blueshirts. Colorado outplayed the Rangers from the second period onward as the Avalanche scored five unanswered goals after a 2-1 score at the end of the first and ultimately won by a mark of 7-3. Jacob Trouba, Filip Chytil and Nils Lundkvist scored goals for New York with Alexis Lafrèniere, K'Andre Miller, Ryan Reaves, Artemi Panarin, Jacob Trouba and Nils Lundkvist all recording assists. NYCFC's MLS Cup debut got off to a slow start as they failed to create a shot in the first 37 minutes against Atlanta United. However, they looked the better side from the beginning, picking up momentum leading into the first half's end and carrying it into the second, where they scored two to earn the win at Yankee Stadium. Taty Castellanos deposited the first, Alex Callens dropped in a rebound for the second and Sean Johnson kept a clean sheet with some big saves late to lift NYCFC to victory and book them a ticket against the top-seeded New England Revolution in the Eastern Conference Finals. Here's Michael Calamari reporting on the win and the energy in the Bronx that played a big role in it. It took every inning of 162 games but a walk-off single from Aaron Judge lifted the Yankees to a victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in the final one, granting them a spot in the AL Wild Card. There were so many stories from the game — Judge, pitching dominance from Taillon and the bullpen, Gio Urshela — and a season that continues to surprise and is only just beginning. Here's Alex Wolz with one final regular season postgame report before Tuesday's Wild Card battle against the Boston Red Sox. NYCFC entered Sunday looking to bounce back from two consecutive losses and a free fall in standings against Nashville SC at Red Bull Arena. Instead, they missed a number of goal-scoring opportunities and remained scoreless for the third game in a row, this time ending in a draw. Despite the recent struggles, Ronny Deila feels confident in his team's direction as they'll hope to find a win in two weeks with another matchup against the Red Bulls in Harrison. NYCFC was looking to assert their dominance over the Red Bulls after playing to a 1-1 draw in Harrison on Wednesday. The Blues came out of the gates strong as expected but could not finish, enabling Omir Fernandez and the Red Bulls to skip one past Sean Johnson and take a 1-0 lead they did not relinquish. Michael Calamari recaps all the biggest moments from Saturday's Bronx edition of the next-door neighbor soccer rivalry.
