It was certainly Gleyber Day at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday, as Gleyber Torres knocked in 5 RBIs, serving as the entire offense in the Yankees’ 5-3 win over the Blue Jays. In addition to Torres, Jameson Taillon looked really sharp once again for New York, going 5.1 innings allowing just 2 runs. Afterwards the combination of Michael King, Clay Holmes, and Aroldis Chapman were able to get the Yankees to the finish line. The Yankees sweep Toronto and are leading the season series against them with a 6-3 record. The Yankees are able to extend their MLB best record to 22-8, as they cap off a nice end to their homestand before heading out for an 8 game road trip. The New York Red Bulls home winless streak to start the season reached five games on Saturday night, as they drew 1-1 with the Portland Timbers at Red Bull Arena. After a sluggish start to the second half, Portland took the lead on a goal from forward Jaroslaw Niezgoda in the 53rd minute. The Red Bulls responded with an Aaron Long tally in the 67th minute, but were unable to find a winner despite a small flurry of late chances. New York is back in action this Tuesday for a U.S. Open Cup tilt with D.C. United, followed by a trip to Philadelphia next Saturday. After, they will look to rectify their home woes on Wednesday, May 18th against the Chicago Fire. On Saturday, NYCFC used a strong second half to overcome the San Jose Earthquakes 3-0 with goals from Keaton Parks, Gabriel Pereira, and Chris Gloster. After a quiet first half, the Cityzens bursted into life following the introduction of Pereira, Gloster, and Maxi Moralez. All three goals came in the last 15 minutes of the game, as NYCFC jumped to 5th place in the eastern conference standings at 4-1-3. This was City’s third win in a row, following triumphs over Real Salt Lake and Toronto FC the last two weeks. The Boys in Blue are back in action next Saturday, May 7 against Sporting Kansas City at Citi Field. The New York Yankees make it two in a row against the Cleveland Guardians as Gleyber Torres plays pinch-hit hero with the walk-off winner to put the Yanks in front of a back-and-forth affair for good, 5-4. Nestor Cortes took the mound and continued his dominant start to the year, extending his scoreless inning streak all the way into the fifth, where a two run homer was his only blemish of the day. Cortes finished with 6.1 IP, 2 ER and 8 K, giving the Yankees' bats enough time to get going, and shortly thereafter, they did. Ultimately, both sides traded blows until the bottom of the ninth, where Kiner-Falefa sparked the comeback that Torres finished off to secure another series win. A lot to like on the diamond, specifically in another fantastic outing from Cortes and signs of a consistent roster starting to take shape. However, the storylines did not stop there, as fans began to senselessly throw trash on the field following the win. Michael Calamari has the recap on everything that went down, before and after the game. The New York Rangers cement their place atop New York with a 6-3 win over the New York Islanders at UBS Arena, securing home playoff ice and remaining within striking distance of the division. The game was put out of reach as soon as the first period, where Andrew Copp netted a natural hat trick, all three goals assisted by Artemi Panarin who finished with four and the first star of the night. The Isles scratched back from there, with Brock Nelon passing the 35 goal threshold, but could not get much closer. Alexander Georgiev stood tall in goal as he, and this Rangers squad, keep finding a groove before the playoffs. Get the breakdown in a dual postgame report from Chris Hennessy and Mike Messina.
