After disappointing series against both the Angels and the Orioles, the Yankees headed into a big four game set against the Blue Jays looking to gain some separation in the Wild Card from their dangerous AL East counterpart. Game one, however, was a reminder of what the Yankees once were, with a comeback effort from Jameson Taillon pushed aside due to a scoreless outing at the plate and a bullpen blowup from Brooks Kriske, resulting in an 8-0 loss on Labor Day. Here's Alex Wolz with the postgame report before three more games against Toronto that will have a massive impact on where the Yankees end up this season. As disappointing as Tuesday's 8-0 blowout to the Giants may have been, Wednesday's narrow 3-2 defeat was perhaps even worse for the Mets. They got a terrific start from Taijuan Walker, carrying a 2-1 advantage into the seventh inning, but a questionable decision from Luis Rojas brought Aaron Loup into the game and an end to his dominance as of late, with a two run double giving the Giants the lead for good. It's now the Mets' sixth one run loss in the last twelve games of a brutal stretch against the NL West and Sam Davis has the reasons why in recapping the night from Citi Field. After struggling in his first few starts in pinstripes, Andrew Heaney bounced back to deliver an incredible outing as Anthony Rizzo and Bronx product Andrew Velazquez led the charge at the plate and the Yankees to a sweep over the Boston Red Sox with a 5-2 victory on Thursday night. Things got shaky late as they often do, but it is a crucial result for the Yankees as they now sit in sole possession of the Wild Card with the job of making the playoffs only getting started. Taijuan Walker finally looked like his All-Star self again and Michael Conforto continued his scorching hot stretch of late, but Walker Buehler was equally as dominant on the mound and Cody Bellinger and the Dodgers had just a bit more juice than the Mets at the plate to pick up a second consecutive win in extra innings. The Mets once again showed their fight, but results matter most, especially when the rest of the division is getting them. Here's Sam Davis recapping the Mets' 2-1 loss at Citi Field. After struggling throughout the past week, especially on offense, the Mets persevered through the delays to take the doubleheader on Thursday, and the series, against the Nationals. Marcus Stroman delivered a brilliant outing on the mound in the opener as Pete Alonso finished things off with a walk-off homer in game two. Now, the Mets will look to carry their offensive momentum into a difficult stretch of the games against the Giants and Dodgers. Sam Davis recaps the doubleheader and the road ahead. The Yankees could not have looked worse at the plate through the majority of Friday night's bout with the Mariners. But with a terrific collective effort from the bullpen that kept them close to a team that couldn't put things away and a few lucky breaks, they found themselves on the winning end of a wild extra-innings game in the Bronx and it was Brett Gardner who delivered the final blow. Alex Wolz recaps the story behind Yankees' walk-off win. FOLLOW US: Twitter: @wfuvsports Instagram: @wfuv_sports Facebook: WFUV Sports YouTube: WFUV Sports
With Gary Sánchez the latest name to enter the COVID-19 IL, Nestor Cortes allowing a batch of runs and the bullpen providing some scary moments, the Yankees did not look their best in the first game of a big series against the Mariners. Regardless, they earned the result, winning 5-3. A key reason for that was Joey Gallo, who delivered his first shining moment as a Yankee with the go-ahead three run homer. It's another crucial victory, this time versus one of the neighboring teams in the Wild Card standings, to sit just a handful of games back from the top of the AL East and ten games above .500. Ryan Gregware has the story from Thursday night in the Bronx. FOLLOW US: Twitter: @wfuvsports Instagram: @wfuv_sports Facebook: WFUV Sports YouTube: WFUV Sports
Coming off a disappointing Monday night loss to the Orioles, the Yankees needed to bounce back on Tuesday, even with some more COVID-19 troubles, and they did just that. The offense combined to score 13 runs for their best performance of the season as Luis Gil got the call-up and impressed on the mound for his MLB debut, as too did Stephen Ridings and the bullpen. It's the type of win the Yankees needed and will look to replicate in a portion of the schedule where they need to capitalize. Here's Alex Wolz recapping the night's action.
