Michigan wing Caleb Houstan meets with the media after the Wolverines' victory over Northwestern.
The Wolverines rode hot shooting, 50% from the floor and 67% from 3s, to win an important Big Ten tilt. The Michigan squad was propelled by Hunter Dickinson's 25 points, 9 rebounds (3/4 from 3) and Caleb Houstan's 19 pts. (a new career high). This is not 3 good efforts in a row for the Michigan squad, even more impressive because it is Indiana's first home loss this season.
On today’s Blue By Ninety, the guys discuss the Michigan Wolverines’ win in Bloomington over the Indiana Hoosiers and what this means for the team moving forward. They talk about the newfound energy this team has shown the past two games and how Hunter Dickinson and Caleb Houstan have emerged as the two top scoring threats.
The Michigan Wolverines could do no wrong against the Hoosiers of Indiana on Sunday afternoon. If you’re looking for a formula for blowing a team out, shooting over 50% from the floor and over 60% from the three-point line is a good place to start. Hunter Dickinson & Caleb Houstan led the offensive explosion for the Wolverines, combining for 44 points and going 8-11 from behind the 3-point line Michigan continued to improve on defense, limiting the number of touches to standout Hoosier Trayce Jackson-Davis and dominating on both sides of the glass to limit second chances. Though the high number of turnovers (14) could be improved, that was about the only thing that went wrong for the Wolverines, and there’s finally some momentum for a team desperate to get back into the Big Ten race. Michigan snapped a 3-game losing streak with an 83-64 win over unranked Maryland at the Crisler Center on Tuesday night. The Wolverines recently endured a month-long skid including losses to UCF, Rutgers and Illinois, in addition to two other games against Michigan State and Purdue postponed due to COVID-19. Juwan Howard's team was winless since blowing past Southern Utah 87-50 on December 18. Howard tied his former head coach Steve Fisher as the fastest coach in school history to reach the 50-win mark after going 50-24 in just under three years at his alma mater. Hunter Dickinson returned to the lineup (0:12) after missing the loss at Illinois and finished with a team-high 21 points, six assists and six rebounds against Maryland. Moussa Diabate (0:17), Caleb Houstan and Devante Jones (0:21) combined to score 42 points. Freshman guard Frankie Collins added six points and three assists off the bench, including an alley-oop from Eli Brooks (0:38) to give Michigan a 59-44 lead. Eric Ayala scored a game-high 22 points (0:34) in the loss. The Wolverines, who shot an impressive 58.3% from the field, will face Indiana and Northwestern next. Maryland hosts first place Illinois on Friday. Coming into this game, it felt like desperation for the Michigan Wolverines basketball team. It was the mark of a full month since the last Wolverines victory on the hardfloor, against Southern Utah back on December 18th. The Wolverines did what they had to, turning out a comfortable 83-64 win against a struggling Maryland Terrapins squad at the Crisler Center. Hunter Dickinson returned to the line-up and immediately had his presence felt, dishing out 6 assists throughout the night and leading the team with 21 points. Youngsters Caleb Houstan and Mousa Diabate added 16 and 14 points, respectively, with Houstan especially looking much better shooting the ball and more comfortable on offense as a whole. All in all, this was a game the team desperately needed to get back on track. Now the question remains, can they string together a couple of wins to turn around the season?
