Michigan vs. Ohio State Basketball Highlights & Analysis

Heading into this game, the Michigan Wolverines were squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble. Win this road match-up vs. the Ohio State Buckeyes and you add a Quadrant 1 win, greatly increasing your tournament resume. Lose, and you have to do some work in the conference tournament to feel good about those chances. On paper this game looked winnable, until, shortly before tip-off, it was shared that Hunter Dickinson would not be playing due to a stomach illness. Crap. Enter Terrance Williams II. Putting together a 17-point performance, 11 of which came in the first half, Williams provided a spark the Wolverines desperately needed to stay with the Buckeyes through the first 20 minutes of the game. Whether from beyond the arc or driving to the bucket, Williams was excellent. Not to be outdone, Devante Jones has shown he’s one of the most valuable players on the team, dishing out 9 assists and leading the team with 21 points. Despite a lack of Dickinson, Caleb Houstan going 0-10 on the day, the Wolverines picked up a road win over Ohio State and has to feel good about themselves heading into the postseason. Michigan vs. Rutgers Basketball Highlights & Analysis
Michigan vs. Rutgers Basketball Highlights & Analysis

I tend to avoid terms like “must-win” when talking about a particular game, but this might have been one for the Michigan Wolverines. In the first game of the 5-game suspension of Juwan Howard, Phil Martelli led the team to a crucial 71-62 victory over the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers. This was the final non-Q1 game on the schedule for Michigan, so for a team desperately in need of some wins to close the season, it’s easy to see why this one falls within that category for keeping NCAA Tournament hopes alive. Caleb Houstan led the team with 21 points with 5 three-pointers, adding an offensive spark and key minutes that were desperately needed without Moussa Diabate or Terrance Williams. Buckeyes beat rival Michigan 68-57 on the road as EJ Liddell leads second half surge (Feb. 12, 2022)
Buckeyes beat rival Michigan 68-57 on the road as EJ Liddell leads second half surge (Feb. 12, 2022)

The 16th ranked Buckeyes took down Michigan 68-57 on Saturday night in Ann Arbor (0:04), rebounding from a troubling loss at Rutgers earlier in the week. Ohio State has struggled on the road all season (0:13), going just 4-5 compared to a perfect 10-0 at home. EJ Liddell led the way against Michigan, scoring a game-high 28 points and five rebounds as the Buckeyes improved to 15-6. Eli Brooks had 17 points in the loss (0:17) as the Wolverines dropped to 13-10. Liddell started a bit slow but once he got going, the junior forward was able to get whatever shot he wanted (0:22). The Big Ten Player of the Year candidate continuously found the middle of the lane for a fall away jumper (0:37) or bullied his way into the lane to finish at the rim. He racked up an impressive 28 points, despite struggling from 3-point range, to go with three blocks (0:25) in 36 minutes. He also knocked down a clutch triple (0:51) to extend Ohio State's lead late in the second half. Malaki Branham (0:29) has become the Buckeyes second most important player but seemed timid at times at Michigan. After scoring 19 points including four 3-pointers in the loss at Rutgers, Branham had just six points, three rebounds and one assist on Saturday. He didn’t play poorly but the expectations are a bit higher. The same can be said for Michigan freshman forward Caleb Houstan (0:32), who totaled only five points and two rebounds in 34 minutes. Wolverines survive scare at home from Northwestern 72-70, extend 3-game win streak (Jan. 26, 2022)

Michigan slipped past Northwestern 72-70 after blowing a double digit lead in the second half on Wednesday night at the Crisler Center. The Wolverines are now on 3-game winning streak since losing back to back Big Ten matchups. Caleb Houstan scored a game-high 18 points on 71.4% shooting from the field in the recent home win. Northwestern trailed 48-37 early in the second half before going on a 14-3 run to tie the game. DeVante' Jones (0:05) knocked down four free throws in the final minute to give Michigan the lead and Julian Roper's game-winning attempt fell short at the buzzer. Jones finished with 15 points (0:18) and six assists, while Hunter Dickinson had nine points and five rebounds before fouling out with just over two minutes remaining. The game completely slowed down midway through the second half with 26 fouls called following halftime and 46 fouls throughout. Three players fouled out including Moussa Diabate, who had eight points (0:31) and seven rebounds in limited playing time. Pete Nance led the Wildcats with 14 points, six rebounds and four assists. Boo Buie (0:09) and Ryan Young also had 13 points in the loss. Eli Brooks (0:15) added 12 points after a slow start in the first half. Houstan was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week after making eight 3-pointers in wins over Maryland and Indiana last week. He continued to look more comfortable, connecting on 3/5 attempts from beyond the arc including a 3-pointer to give the Wolverines a 68-65 lead with 1:38 left. Terrance Williams also knocked down a big 3-pointer (0:37), his only bucket of the game, to help Michigan hold off Northwestern. Juwan Howard's team improved to 10-7 and will travel to face rival Michigan State on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats host first place Illinois next, who are fresh off a 56-55 win over the Spartans.
