Michigan was led by Hunter Dickinson (27 pts) and Eli Brooks (23, 18 in the 2nd half) to a huge unexpected victory over #3 seed Tennessee. Michigan was also helped by Terrance Williams' 9 points off the bench.
I give my thoughts about Coach Howard, was this fair and what might happen to the Michigan squad going forward.
In a sloppy 2nd half the Wolverines found a way to hit their free throws and come away with a much needed victory to keep any March madness hopes alive. Michigan shot 31.5 % from the floor and 24% from 3s. Good thing the Wolverines shot 19-22 from the free throw line. That was the difference in the game.
The Wolverines rode hot shooting, 50% from the floor and 67% from 3s, to win an important Big Ten tilt. The Michigan squad was propelled by Hunter Dickinson's 25 points, 9 rebounds (3/4 from 3) and Caleb Houstan's 19 pts. (a new career high). This is not 3 good efforts in a row for the Michigan squad, even more impressive because it is Indiana's first home loss this season.
In a must win game the Michigan Wolverines carried some momentum over from their strong effort, albeit a losing one, from their Illinois game and played a solid half of basketball, holding Maryland to 19 first half points and leading by 20. The 2nd half showed a return to Michigan's normal pattern of giving up too many makeable shots but the Wolverine offense was able to make enough shots to maintain their lead. The Michigan attack was led by Hunter Dickinson who had 21 pts, 6 rebs, 6 ast (a new personal record). Houstan, Diabate and Jones also scored in double figures.
The Michigan Wolverines ventured on the road for their last non-conference game of the year, after a tight first half Michigan used a 9-1 run to start the 2nd half, went up by 12 and forced UCF to call a TO. From that point EVERYTHING went right for the Knights. Spurned on by Green's and Mahan's combined 53 points, UCF went on a 40-19 run (including going 8-8 on 3s in the 2nd half) to completely flip the game around. Whatever Michigan did defensively was ineffective and the Knights rode that momentum (along with an outstanding home crowd atmosphere) to hand the Wolverines a terribly disappointing loss. In a pattern similar to the Minnesota game, the Wolverines could do nothing to stop hot shooters. Offensively, Michigan had 4 starters in double figures but Houstan went 0-7 with1 pt as his freshman season continues the pattern of feast or famine, and outside of Bufkin's 8 pts, the Michigan bench only had 2 other points.
In what seemed like an open round of a march madness tournament the 6th ranked Michigan Wolverines got up early on PVAMU and never looked back. This was not a total cake walk, no the game was never in doubt but Michigan turned the ball over 20 times and hit 17 of 32 free throws. An easy win provided balanced scoring, 4 Wolverines were in double figures, led by Eli Brook's 15. Hunter Dickinson also added a double double, 11/10 rebounds.
The Baylor Bears started off attacking Gonzaga, hitting their first 5 three pointers and the Zags never recovered. The Bears were dominant the whole game and never let Gonzaga get back into the game.
