After an up and down season, the Michigan Wolverines are headed home after a 63-55 loss at the hands of a familiar foe, the Villanova Wildcats. Michigan had their chances with 29 dunk or layup attempts. Unfortunately, the Wolverines couldn’t take advantage of those chances, shooting 41% on those close shot attempts. Like it has been all season, Hunter Dickinson led the Wolverines with 15 points and 15 rebounds, but couldn’t hit consistently, and gave up a fair amount of buckets to the Wildcats defensively. Beyond him, Eli Brooks was the only other Michigan player in double digits with 14 points. The veteran was truly the only shooting threat for the Wolverines on the night, as no other player was able to score more than 7 points. Although the season overall came up below expectations for many, it was quite the accomplishment to make it to the Sweet 16, and nice to see a few more games of Eli Brooks, Devante Jones, and Hunter Dickinson, before the next step in their careers. Heading into this game, the Michigan Wolverines were squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble. Win this road match-up vs. the Ohio State Buckeyes and you add a Quadrant 1 win, greatly increasing your tournament resume. Lose, and you have to do some work in the conference tournament to feel good about those chances. On paper this game looked winnable, until, shortly before tip-off, it was shared that Hunter Dickinson would not be playing due to a stomach illness. Crap. Enter Terrance Williams II. Putting together a 17-point performance, 11 of which came in the first half, Williams provided a spark the Wolverines desperately needed to stay with the Buckeyes through the first 20 minutes of the game. Whether from beyond the arc or driving to the bucket, Williams was excellent. Not to be outdone, Devante Jones has shown he’s one of the most valuable players on the team, dishing out 9 assists and leading the team with 21 points. Despite a lack of Dickinson, Caleb Houstan going 0-10 on the day, the Wolverines picked up a road win over Ohio State and has to feel good about themselves heading into the postseason. I tend to avoid terms like “must-win” when talking about a particular game, but this might have been one for the Michigan Wolverines. In the first game of the 5-game suspension of Juwan Howard, Phil Martelli led the team to a crucial 71-62 victory over the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers. This was the final non-Q1 game on the schedule for Michigan, so for a team desperately in need of some wins to close the season, it’s easy to see why this one falls within that category for keeping NCAA Tournament hopes alive. Caleb Houstan led the team with 21 points with 5 three-pointers, adding an offensive spark and key minutes that were desperately needed without Moussa Diabate or Terrance Williams. Watch out, the Wolverines are starting to put it together. Behind a career high 28 points from Moussa Diabate, the Michigan Wolverines downed the Iowa Hawkeyes 84-79 in a key away game for Michigan’s NCAA Tournament hopes. With this win, one would have to think Michigan is squarely on the bubble. Despite a tough end of conference season for Juwan Howard’s squad, you have to feel optimistic at how the Wolverines are playing down the stretch. The Michigan Wolverines put together a complete performance against the #3 team in the nation. A 24-point victory over the Purdue Boilermakers surprised pretty much everyone on Thursday night, providing the Wolverines with a quadrant 1 win that will go a long way in keeping Michigan’s NCAA tournament hopes alive. The effort from the Wolverines was widespread. All five starters had double digit points, with Hunter Dickinson leading the way with 22. Eli Brooks had an electric stretch during the second half, getting 8 straight points for the Wolverines to further distance themselves from Purdue. He totaled 18 on the night, and Diabate matched his career high with 15 points. As a team, Michigan shot over 50% from the field, including a 12-21 mark from three-point land. Now it’s all about keeping the momentum going into a final stretch of the schedule that sees Michigan playing 5 more ranked teams. The saying “a win is a win” exists for a reason. I believe all viewers verified that this game between Michigan and Penn State on Tuesday night is that reason. In a “who can miss the most and still win” kind of game, the Wolverines found a way to come out on top 58-57. Hunter Dickinson proved to be the difference-maker once again, having both a team-high in points and rebounds at 16 and 15, respectively. Despite shooting less than 32% from the field, the Wolverines did put up over 86% from the free throw line, capitalizing from the line late in the game to keep enough distance ahead of the Nittany Lions. This was definitely a “cannot lose” type of game for Michigan, and they did just that. Onto bigger and better things and to hopefully never watch this game footage again!
