Michigan vs. Villanova Basketball Highlights & Analysis
After an up and down season, the Michigan Wolverines are headed home after a 63-55 loss at the hands of a familiar foe, the Villanova Wildcats. Michigan had their chances with 29 dunk or layup attempts. Unfortunately, the Wolverines couldn’t take advantage of those chances, shooting 41% on those close shot attempts. Like it has been all season, Hunter Dickinson led the Wolverines with 15 points and 15 rebounds, but couldn’t hit consistently, and gave up a fair amount of buckets to the Wildcats defensively. Beyond him, Eli Brooks was the only other Michigan player in double digits with 14 points. The veteran was truly the only shooting threat for the Wolverines on the night, as no other player was able to score more than 7 points. Although the season overall came up below expectations for many, it was quite the accomplishment to make it to the Sweet 16, and nice to see a few more games of Eli Brooks, Devante Jones, and Hunter Dickinson, before the next step in their careers. Michigan UPSETS Tennessee!! || NCAA Basketball Highlights & Analysis
The Michigan Wolverines have punched their ticket to the program’s fifth straight Sweet Sixteen appearance in the NCAA tournament with a 76-68 victory over the Tennessee Volunteers. As the 3-seed, many (including myself) had the Volunteers as a dark horse to make the final four or even winning it all, due to a 13-1 record heading into this match-up against the Wolverines and a strong SEC conference this year. Despite losing Devante Jones after the first half, Michigan leaned on Hunter Dickinson and Eli Brooks with 20+ point performances to make the difference. Dickinson established himself early with a pair of three pointers, then got up to speed on the inside, doing a lot of work on the block en route to a 27 point performance. For Eli Brooks, whether it was a blow by lay-up or a midrange, the veteran was extremely efficient in his 23 points, hitting 9 of 14 from the floor. Diabate added 13 points and Terrance Williams had an excellent stretch late in the game, adding a few key putbacks and rebounds to help ice the game. Michigan’s doing enough to win, and still has plenty of turnovers to clean up on to improve themselves. When they’re playing well, the Wolverines can beat anybody, as Tennessee learned. Michigan vs. Ohio State Basketball Highlights & Analysis
Heading into this game, the Michigan Wolverines were squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble. Win this road match-up vs. the Ohio State Buckeyes and you add a Quadrant 1 win, greatly increasing your tournament resume. Lose, and you have to do some work in the conference tournament to feel good about those chances. On paper this game looked winnable, until, shortly before tip-off, it was shared that Hunter Dickinson would not be playing due to a stomach illness. Crap. Enter Terrance Williams II. Putting together a 17-point performance, 11 of which came in the first half, Williams provided a spark the Wolverines desperately needed to stay with the Buckeyes through the first 20 minutes of the game. Whether from beyond the arc or driving to the bucket, Williams was excellent. Not to be outdone, Devante Jones has shown he’s one of the most valuable players on the team, dishing out 9 assists and leading the team with 21 points. Despite a lack of Dickinson, Caleb Houstan going 0-10 on the day, the Wolverines picked up a road win over Ohio State and has to feel good about themselves heading into the postseason. Michigan vs. Iowa Basketball Highlights & Analysis
It was a rough start for the Michigan Wolverines when it came to a key component of the game of basketball: shooting. The Wolverines started cold from deep and missed a few easy shots. Meanwhile, the Hawkeyes star Keegan Murray nailed 3 straight deep shots en route to a 15-point first half. Michigan found themselves down 17 after the first half and not a lot of answers. The second half didn’t really spell much different for Michigan. Despite a couple brief runs, Jordan Bohanan continued to rain in the three-pointers and maintain a healthy double digit lead throughout the first 10 minutes of the second stanza. The Wolverines did pull within 7 late in the game with less than 3 minutes to go, but ultimately a few turnovers ended the game with a tough loss. Michigan vs. Illinois Basketball Highlights & Analysis (2/27/22)
Sometimes you just have to tip your hat to the opponent. The Fighting Illini came to the Crisler Center and shot over 55% on the day from all over the court, putting down an otherwise clean game from the Wolverines. Michigan didn’t play poorly by any means; Illinois simply played better. Despite 20+ point performances from Devante Jones and Caleb Houstan for the Wolverines, it simply wasn’t enough. Kofi Cockburn led the way for the Illini, being a thorn in Hunter Dickinson’s side throughout the game defensively, and churning out a 27 point performance. Alfronzo Plummer led the way for the Illini in the first half, putting 23 of his 26 points in the first half and doing his best flamethrower impression from behind the arc. The Michigan Wolverines don’t have much wiggle room if they’re still eyeing that NCAA Tournament bubble. The path is still there, but about as minimal as possible.
