Cleveland Cavaliers backcourt duo Darius Garland & Donovan Mitchell fuel win over New York Knicks.
Ohio State fought through a slow start to take down 10-seed Loyola Chicago 54-41 in the first round on Friday. Despite struggling for most of the last month, the defense was very focused on protecting the paint and was able to create turnovers with high intensity. EJ Liddell and Malaki Branham (0:09) led the way offensively as usual but Kyle Young’s return (0:05) was arguably the biggest reason why the Buckeyes survived and advanced. As both teams took a while to find an offensive rhythm, Liddell (0:30) couldn’t get a shot to fall to in the first half. He had just four points on 0/3 from the field and 0/2 from 3-point range at halftime. Even when his shot wasn’t falling, Liddell (0:35) remained active and made an impact in other areas. Then the junior forward started to attack the paint and post up more, and he eventually got going in the second half, knocking down 4/6 shot attempts after the break. Liddell was phenomenal defensively and was a major factor in limiting Loyola’s leading scorer Lucas Williamson to four points on 1/10 from the field. The All-Big Ten first team selection racked up 10 rebounds and three blocks in the win, including a highlight-worthy block (0:12) from the weak side that led to a fastbreak layup. Liddell will have to play just as well (0:44), if not better, against Villanova in the second round. Branham has scored 10+ points in his last 10 games including four 20+ point performances. The freshman forward has become an extremely consistent scorer, in addition to being a dynamic ball handler and defender. Villanova’s roster is filled with experience but he should be able to keep playing at a high level. Chris Holtmann certainly hopes Branham can stay hot as the Buckeyes look to keep their season alive. Young returned to the lineup after missing three games due to a concussion. He exited the loss against Nebraska on March 1 and didn’t play on Senior Day against Michigan or in the Big Ten Tournament matchup with Penn State. The Buckeyes clearly missed the senior big man and the defense suffered during his absence. Ohio State’s offense wasn’t nearly as consistent either as Young brings versatility and stability on both ends. The 6’8 senior scored nine points and seven rebounds in his first game back against Loyola. He scored a bucket (0:04) early on and got to the free throw line when the Buckeyes offense was sputtering in the opening minutes. Holtmann’s frontcourt combined for 24 rebounds as Young (0:41) consistently crashed the rim alongside Liddell and Zed Key. There’s no doubt that Ohio State’s defensive improvement is a promising sign but Loyola’s offense (0:24) was atrocious from the beginning of the game, shooting the second worst percentage (26.7%) in NCAA Tournament history. Villanova will execute at a much higher rate as guards Collin Gillespie and Justin Moore are difficult to contain. They combined for 35 points on 7/14 from beyond the arc in a 80-60 win over Delaware in the first round. Purdue advanced to the Big Ten Tournament title game following consecutive wins over Penn State and Michigan State. Jaden Ivey (0:01) finished with a team-high 17 points, seven rebounds and two assists (0:20) for the Boilermakers in the quarterfinals on Friday night. Zach Edey compiled 15 points and five rebounds in the 69-61 win. Despite coming up short, Penn State competed as head coach Micah Shrewsberry faced his former team. Shrewsberry was an assistant under Matt Painter from 2019-2021 after spending time with the Boilermakers earlier in the decade as well. Purdue led 35-31 at halftime. Purdue went on a 20-7 run to end the first half after a slow shooting start and Eric Hunter Jr. knocked down a 3-pointer (0:24) to give the Boilermakers a double-digit lead with 8:11 left. Penn State cut the deficit to 62-61 but another run pushed Purdue to the semifinals. Brandon Newman (0:52) had 12 points for the Boilermakers in his first game in over a month. Jalen Pickett had 16 points for Penn State, while John Harrar (0:30) totaled 15 points and 12 rebounds. Ivey flashed next level speed and finishing ability in the win with a number of impressive plays including a hanging layup off the glass (0:14) and a drive through two defenders (0:37). The next day, Matt Painter's team moved past Michigan State 75-70 to secure a spot in the championship game. Trevion Williams (0:57), the Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year (0:34), came up huge against the Spartans with 15 points, seven rebounds and three assists off the bench. Ivey scored a game-high 22 points on 7/14 shooting from the field and Edey added 11 points and 10 rebounds. Hunter and Mason Gillis (1:05) came up clutch again, hitting back to back triples to seal the win. Purdue will take on Iowa in the Big Ten title game tomorrow afternoon at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Jordan Bohannon (0:01, the Hawkeyes senior point guard, banked in a game-winning triple (1:14) as Iowa survived red-hot Indiana 80-77 in a thriller at the Big Ten Tournament semifinals on March 12 in Indianapolis at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Bohannon struggled for most of the game before going 3/3 from beyond the arc in the last 2:16 (1:08). Keegan Murray (0:34), a potential lottery pick in the upcoming NBA Draft, knocked down a ton of big shots (0:50) in the second half as well during a dominant 32-point, 9-rebound performance that included a record-breaking eight made 3-pointers (1:01). Trayce Jackson-Davis (0:54) continued his excellent postseason run, scoring 31 points and 10 rebounds in the loss. Xavier Johnson (0:20) and Race Thompson (0:29) combined for 31 points and 11 assists. Patrick McCaffery (0:45) added 16 points for the Hawkeyes (0:40), who will take on Purdue in the Big Ten championship (1:29) on Sunday as both programs look to win their first conference tournament title in over a decade. Indiana came into the conference tournament uncertain if they were going to earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament but following a pair of impressive wins over Michigan (0:17) and top seeded Illinois, the Hoosiers appear to be headed to the tournament for the first time since 2016. Mike Woodson’s team came back from a 17-point deficit in the second half (0:23) to eliminate the Wolverines on Thursday afternoon as Trayce Jackson-Davis (0:19) dropped a game-high 24 points (0:40) and eight rebounds. Xavier Johnson (0:06) was huge as well, totaling 17 points (0:11), eight rebounds and seven assists in the 74-69 win. According to ESPN, the Hoosiers had a 1.5% chance to come back when Michigan led 60-43 with just over 12 minutes remaining. Miller Kopp added nine points including a corner 3-pointer (0:28) to bring Indiana within a point before completing the comeback. A day later, the Hoosiers pulled off another upset 65-63 over the Fighting Illini. Jackson-Davis (0:46) traded blows with Kofi Cockburn (1:09) in the paint as two of the Big Ten’s best big men matched up. Cockburn compiled a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds but Jackson-Davis (1:17) was able to use his athleticism and quickness to push Indiana (1:00) into the semifinals. The sophomore center (1:24) scored 21 points on 69.2% shooting from the field, while Johnson and Thompson combined for 23 points and 13 rebounds. Coleman Hawkins (0:54) had 18 points in the loss. Indiana will meet Iowa with a chance to advance to the Big Ten championship game but it certainly looks like they have done enough this week to earn an at-large berth as Selection Sunday approaches. The last time Indiana reached the Big Ten semifinal was in 2013. Video available in 1080p and 4K on all devices! Karl-Anthony Towns knocked down the game-winning 3-pointer (0:02) in the final seconds on Monday as the Minnesota Timberwolves held on for a 127-122 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse. Minnesota led by 23 points in the third quarter but narrowly escaped after allowing Cleveland to comeback in the fourth quarter. D’Angelo Russell scored a team-high 25 points on 4/8 from beyond the arc (1:07) including a clutch steal and score (1:39) to extend the Timberwolves lead. Towns didn't have his best performance, finishing with 17 points and four rebounds, but he made the one that mattered most. Cleveland led 37-26 but then Minnesota exploded for 75 points in the second and third quarter to take a 13-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. Following halftime, the Timberwolves went on a 26-7 run to open up a 98-75 lead with 2:44 left in the third period. Kevin Love kept the Cavaliers in it with a personal 7-0 run after Minnesota went up 20 points. Love finished with a game-high 26 points on 5/10 from 3-point range, highlighted by a fastbreak triple (0:38) to cap a Cavaliers scoring run. Jarrett Allen totaled 21 points (0:15) and eight rebounds on 9/10 from the field in the loss. Cedi Osman was also instrumental in Cleveland's comeback, finishing with 21 points on 5/9 from distance. After leaving in the first half due to a lower body injury, Osman returned and later hit the game-tying 3-pointer (1:56) following a frantic tie up and ensuing jump ball with 33.9 seconds remaining. On the next possession, Towns drilled the game-winning shot (2:08) at the top of the key with just 11.8 seconds left. Osman missed another game-tying attempt before Russell sealed the win with a pair of free throws (2:21). Isaac Okoro was mostly quiet but his one field goal was a clutch triple (1:50) to bring the Cavs within two points late. Anthony Edwards (0:44) had a few notable scoring bursts and finished with 17 points and four steals. Jaden McDaniels made a career-high five 3-pointers (0:48), while Jarred Vanderbilt (1:17) had eight points and 10 rebounds to go along with a couple beautiful cuts for dunks (1:23) in the fourth quarter. Evan Mobley (0:31) had 15 points and 10 rebounds as the Cavaliers lost at home for the first time since early January. Darius Garland was out with a back injury but he was warming up prior to tip-off and looked relatively mobile on the sideline. Minnesota improved to 33-29 with the thrilling victory in Cleveland. The 16th ranked Buckeyes took down Michigan 68-57 on Saturday night in Ann Arbor (0:04), rebounding from a troubling loss at Rutgers earlier in the week. Ohio State has struggled on the road all season (0:13), going just 4-5 compared to a perfect 10-0 at home. EJ Liddell led the way against Michigan, scoring a game-high 28 points and five rebounds as the Buckeyes improved to 15-6. Eli Brooks had 17 points in the loss (0:17) as the Wolverines dropped to 13-10. Liddell started a bit slow but once he got going, the junior forward was able to get whatever shot he wanted (0:22). The Big Ten Player of the Year candidate continuously found the middle of the lane for a fall away jumper (0:37) or bullied his way into the lane to finish at the rim. He racked up an impressive 28 points, despite struggling from 3-point range, to go with three blocks (0:25) in 36 minutes. He also knocked down a clutch triple (0:51) to extend Ohio State's lead late in the second half. Malaki Branham (0:29) has become the Buckeyes second most important player but seemed timid at times at Michigan. After scoring 19 points including four 3-pointers in the loss at Rutgers, Branham had just six points, three rebounds and one assist on Saturday. He didn’t play poorly but the expectations are a bit higher. The same can be said for Michigan freshman forward Caleb Houstan (0:32), who totaled only five points and two rebounds in 34 minutes. The Minnesota Timberwolves extended their 3-game win streak as Anthony Edwards scored a game-high 25 points in a 128-117 win over the Detroit Pistons at Little Caesars Arena on Thursday. The sophomore guard struggled against the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday with a season-low five points but rebounded in Detroit highlighted by a 12-point first quarter and three straight buckets in the third quarter. Karl-Anthony Towns (0:08) put up 21 points and 14 rebounds in the win, eclipsing the 20-point mark in 11 of last 13 outings. Minnesota moved into 7th place in the Western Conference with a 27-25 record as seven players scored in double figures. Patrick Beverley (0:10) totaled 11 points, seven assists and six rebounds including a step back triple to seal the win (0:30). Taurean Prince (0:21) and Malik Beasley combined for 41 points on 9/11 shooting from 3-point range. Jaden McDaniels (0:04), who will participate alongside Edwards in the Rising Stars Challenge later this month, scored 10 points and two boards. Jarred Vanderbilt added 13 points and six rebounds in the win. The Pistons were without rookie Cade Cunningham after the guard left in the loss versus the New Orleans Pelicans with a right hip pointer and is day to day. Jerami Grant and Saddiq Bey (0:15) took over the majority of the offensive load, combining for 37 shots. Bey had 21 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists, while Grant finished with 20 points and two blocks. Frank Jackson led the Pistons with 25 points off the bench. Isaiah Stewart scored 10 points and 13 rebounds. Bey, Cunningham and Stewart will also compete in the Rising Stars Challenge. The Timberwolves wait for a Saturday night rematch with the Pistons, while Detroit hosts the Boston Celtics on Friday.
