Gor Mahia vs Motema Pembe 1-1 | Caf Confederation Cup | Goals & Highlights (27.10.2019). Ten-man Gor Mahia were held to a 1-1 draw by Congolese side DC Motema Pembe in the first leg of the Total CAF Confederation Cup play-off round at the Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi on Sunday evening. The home side will have their goalkeeper David Mapigano to thank after he saved a second half penalty that would have seen them lose 2-1 on home soil and see their campaign thrown in tatters. “I think the scoreline is not a fair reflection of the match because we had good chances to score. I am gutted for the players because they worked so hard and should have had a better result from this game. We had three or four good situations that we should have utilized,” Gor’s tactician Steve Polack said. His opposite number Isaac Ngata said; “We gifted them a goal after some poor defending and lack of concentration but I love how we responded. At least now we know how they play and we know what to do to win when we go back home.” Gor Mahia Defender Charles Momanyi was shown a straight red card after handling a goal bound effort on the line. Motema Pembe forward Vinny Bangonga Kombe stepped up for the spot kick but saw his effort well saved by a fully stretched Mapigano. With the scores at 1-1, Motema Pembe had broken away on the counter with Misoko Amale swinging in a beauty of a cross from the right finding Junior Mbele unmarked. The forward’s first header was well saved by Mapigano with the rebound being cleared off the line by Momanyi’s hand. William Likuta Luezi had drawn Motema Pembe level, cancelling out substitute Gnamin Yikpe’s early second half goal. Luezi reacted quickest to a rebound after Mapigano had done well to save a Junior Kone Abou freekick from range. Gor had broken the deadlock in the 63rd minute when Ivorian Yikpe who had spent barely five minutes in the pitch poked Kenneth Muguna’s pass over the advancing keeper for his first goal in the competition. Earlier in the opening half, the visitors had good chances to score. Herritier Ngouelou had two chances, his first effort from the left going over while his second after cutting in was saved beautifully by Mapigano. A minute later, Mukoro Amale had a rasping shot come off the bar. Two minutes to the break Gor had a golden chance when both Boniface Omondi and Nicholas Kipkurui failed to convert a cross from Dickson Ambundo with a gaping goalmouth. It was a more balanced affair in the second half. Just after they had equalized, Motema Pembe came close when Likuta rounded the keeper who had come off his line but his shot was cleared off the line by Geoffrey Ochieng. Caf Confederation Cup Play-Offs: South Africa’s Bidvest Wits and Egyptian debutants Pyramids FC earned precious identical 2-1 away victories in the first leg ties of their Total CAF Confederation Cup play-off round matches in Maputo and Mwanza respectively. In Maputo, homers UD Songo had fought from a goal down to draw level, but they could not stop the fighting spirit of the Clever Boys who scored a 60th minute winner through Sameehg Doutie. The South African outfit had gone ahead through Deon Hotto, but Songo fought back to draw level through Stelio Telinho Ernesto in the 34th minute. The two head into the return leg in Johannesburg next weekend with Bidvest only requiring a draw to book a slot in the group stages of the Confederation Cup. The Tanzanian giants have been knocked out of the competition after the visiting Mozambican side snatched a vital away goal Simba SC have been knocked out of the Caf Champions League after drawing 1-1 against UD Songo of Mozambique on Sunday. A late penalty by Erasto Nyoni was not enough to keep the Msimbazi Reds in the competition as Songo progressed to the next round on the away goal rule. Luis Misquissone scored UD Songo's goal in the first half. Misquissone found Simba SC's net in the 14th minute and the Tanzanian side could not recover until almost the last minute for Nyoni to score an equalizer which was not enough for them. Head coach Patrick Aussems made a change in the 41st minute as he withdrew Kenyan midfielder Francis Kahata and threw Hassan Dilunga into action. The change did not bring the desired results for the Tanzanian champions. Mirajii Athumani, who replaced Gadiel Michael in the 77th minute, was brought down in the 84th minute for Simba SC to be awarded a penalty which they pulled parity from. Simba SC XI: Aishi Manula, Shomari Kapombe, Gadiel Michael, Erasto Nyoni, Pascal Wawa, Jonas Mkude, Deo Kanda, Sharaf Shiboub, Meddie Kagere, Clatous Chama and Francis Kahata. Subs: Beno Kakolanya, Mohammed Hussein, Dos Santos, Gerson Vieira, Mzamiru Yassin, Hassan Dilunga and Miraj Athumani. Caf Champions League Wrap: In Kenya, a Nicholas Kipkirui brace, strikes from Dickson Ambundo and Boniface Omondi as well as an own goal helped Gor Mahia to a 5-1 win over Aigle Noir. Benjamin Gasongo netted a consolation for the visitors, but it didn’t change the course of the tie given the first-leg a fortnight ago ended goalless. Kano Pillars were knocked out of the continental club competition following a 2-0 defeat by Asante Kotoko. The Ghanaian outfit went in front in the 12th minute through Kelvin Andoh, and it stayed that way till the 81st minute when Emmanuel Gyamfi scored the hosts’ second of the game. The Porcupines progress to the next round at Pillars’ expense after overturning a 3-2 defeat in Kano. In Mauritius, Fosa Juniors progressed to the next round after a 1-1 draw with Pamplemousses SC saw them qualify 2-1 on aggregate, as it ended 1-0 to the side from Madagascar in the first leg. Jean Fabrini Razah opened the scoring for the hosts in the 12th minute, but Santatra Andriamamonjy pegged them back just after the hour mark to carry the visitors through. Mekelle 70 Enderta and Cano Sport Academy played out to a 1-1 draw in their encounter on Sunday afternoon. Amanuel Gebremichael put the hosts in front in the 13th minute, but Benjamin Naone levelled in the 39th minute. It stayed that way, and the Malabo-based club progress 3-2 on aggregate, after winning the first-leg 2-1. In Tanzania, Simba SC and Uniao Desportiva Do Songo had everything to play for following their 0-0 draw two weeks ago. It ended 1-1 after 90 minutes, after goals from Luis Misquissone for Unaio and a late leveller by Erasto Nyoni for Simba, saw the visitors progress on away goals. Elsewhere, two second-half goals for Elect-Sport FC saw them defeat Cercle Mberi Sportif 2-0 on the day, and also on aggregate because the reverse fixture ended goalless. An Isaac Mensah effort in the 37th minute helped Atletico Petroleos de Luanda to a 1-0 win over Matlama at Estadio 11 de Novembro. Given the Angolan club won 2-0 in Lesotho, they progress to the next round 3-0 on aggregate. In Togo, a late Richard Nane goal for ASC Kara saw the Togolese side win Buffles du Borgou 1-0. It ended 1-1 a fortnight ago, so the 2-1 aggregate score means Kara go through. Horoya progressed to the next round 2-1 on aggregate at Stade Malien’s expense following a 1-0 win in Guinea. Dramane Nikiema netted the only goal of the game in the 24th minute to take the pre-match favourites through. Following a scoreless draw between Vita Club and UMS de Loum in the first-leg, there was a lot riding on their rematch in Congo. It took a Zakaria Mumuni goal on the hour mark to seal a 1-0 win for Vita Club, who progress to the next round. Just like the aforementioned encounter, the first-leg between Nouadhibou and Societe Omnisports de l'Armee ended goalless, leaving both sides with everything to play for in the return match. An Abdoulaye Gueye penalty in the 70th minute was enough for the hosts to claim the win, thereby progressing by a slender aggregate victory. Al Nasr and USM Alger picked up 3-1 victories on home soil against AS Tempete Mocaf and AS Sonidep, respectively. Al Nasr had lost the reverse fixture 1-0, so the eventual 3-2 aggregate success sees the Libyans progress to the last 32 of the competition. USM Alger, on the other hand, had picked up a 2-1 win on the road and just had to see off Sonidep to progress. The Algerian outfit did that to record a 5-2 aggregate victory.
