The Denver Nuggets were right on the Los Angeles Lakers' heels when Kobe Bryant suddenly got hot. Oh, did he get hot. Bryant scored 19 points in a span of 4:19 of the fourth quarter Wednesday night, and the Lakers beat the Nuggets 122-107 to take a 2-0 lead in their first-round playoff series. Games 3 and 4 will be in Denver on Saturday and Monday night. Bryant finished with 49 points and 10 assists -- one shy of his career playoff high in both categories. "Tonight, the way he was going, we probably could have put 10 people on the court and probably wouldn't have been able to stop him," said Nuggets star Allen Iverson, who wasn't bad himself, getting 31 points and six assists. "I didn't realize it," Bryant said when told about his scoring spree. "You just get into one of those rhythms. My teammates were looking for me, it just feels like the ball finds you." The Lakers led 89-79 entering the fourth quarter. The Nuggets drew within five points three times before a three-point play by Bryant with 6:41 remaining made it 101-93. That was only the beginning. Two free throws by Bryant in a span of two seconds after technical fouls against Smith and Iverson made it 105-94 with 5:37 left, and Bryant added a 3-pointer 18 seconds later to extend the Los Angeles lead to 14. Game over. "The 3-ball he made was the big play," Nuggets coach George Karl said. "I thought that kind of ended the game from the standpoint of our spirit. In a lot of ways, a great player ran us out of gas. The majority of his jump shots that he made tonight are somewhat undefendable." Bryant kept it going before his hot spell ended with 2:22 left when he made a three-point play, giving the Lakers a 120-101 lead. He came out for good 20 seconds later to a loud ovation and chants of "MVP, MVP" from the capacity crowd of 18,997 at Staples Center. Bryant was replaced by Coby Karl, the son of the Denver coach. It was the first time in NBA playoff history that a father has coached against his son. There was some trash talking between Bryant and Kenyon Martin, Denver's 6-foot-9 forward who had the assignment of guarding the Lakers' star in the first two games. "He's one of those players that you don't really want to make mad," teammate Lamar Odom said. "He can make shots from anywhere with people on him. I was surprised [Martin was talking at him]. You never want to wake a sleeping giant. He can hit shots on anybody, on a number of defenders anywhere on the floor. "Talking to him is a surprise to me, but guys are competitors too, so sometimes you get caught up in it. Kobe was definitely coming out to prove a point." Bryant shot just 9-for-26 in scoring 32 points in Game 1. He went 18-for-27 in Game 2. Pau Gasol added 18 points and 10 rebounds and Luke Walton scored 18 points for the Lakers. Odom, hampered by foul trouble throughout the second half, was held to four points, four rebounds and six assists, but in the end it didn't matter. Carmelo Anthony added 23 points, J.R. Smith had a career playoff high 21 and Marcus Camby had 17 rebounds and four blocked shots for Denver. Martin, who fouled out with 5:47 remaining, scored 10 points. Anthony scored seven straight points to trigger an 11-0 run, giving Denver a 68-67 lead midway through the third quarter. With Odom on the bench with four fouls, Los Angeles appeared to be in some trouble. But Walton scored 10 points during a 22-11 spurt to finish the quarter and give the Lakers a 10-point lead. Bryant had four assists during the run.

Irvine, Calif. - Omondi Amoke had career highs of 23 points and 17 rebounds and D. J. Seeley topped his career best with 27 points Saturday night as Cal State Fullerton won a Big West Conference shootout, 92-84. Fullerton also got 25 points from Kwame Vaughn in improving to 12-6 and 4-2. UC Irvine got 23 points from Daman Starring and Derick Flowers had 18 for the Anteaters, who fell to 6-13 and 3-4. Fullerton dominated the first half, 56-30, and led by as many as 30 points at 52-22. Fullerton shot 64 percent from the floor and the 3-point line (9 of 14) while UCI was shooting 39 percent. But the Titans didn't get a field goal for more than 6 minutes to open the second half and UCI got hot, totaling 54 points in the period. UCI made 10 of 16 treys after intermission and got as close as 6 points in the waning seconds. "We couldn't play any better than we did in the first half," said Fullerton Coach Bob Burton. "We must have made at least five 'oh no' shots. "We knew they would come back. They can really score. And when they got hot we started missing and then you start getting timid. We kept turning it over (17 for the game) and they went on a shooting spree. Any time you win is good and when you win on the road it's special. "Amoke was a man tonight. It's what I envisioned when he played like that in practice last year. He's getting healthy (shoulder) and he was the difference." Fullerton finished 13 of 20 from the 3-point line including 6-for-6 by Seeley and 4-of-5 by Vaughn. UCI went 14-for-31 behind the arc with Starring makinng 6-of-9 and Michael Wilder 4-of-8. Fullerton ultimately won the game at the free-throw line, making 20 of 26 in the second half. Amoke, a 51 percent shooter on the season, made 13 of 16. He also came up one rebound shy of the Bren Center rebounding record of 18 by the Titans' Cedric Ceballos. Irvine slowly closed the gap to open the second half as the Titans didn't get a bucket until Amoke's tip-in at 13:31 that made it a 63-45 game. The Anteaters had a run of 7-0 to get within 11 at 71-60 before Orlando Brown hit a trey for Fullerton. The next big Titan bucket was Seeley's first of the second half that put the lead back into double digits at 82-70 with 4:04 to play. UCI got to 87-81 with a minute to go but Vaughn hit 4 of 4 free throws and Seeley made 1 of 2 to offset a 3-pointer by Flowers. Fullerton had lost its last three road games. "We stayed calm and relied on what we do," said Amoke. "We maintained our composure when they were hitting everything. It showed how much parity there is in the conference. Everyone can be good. "I haven't been playing as well as I'm capable. I've been working at the free-throw line." Seeley was playing with a bandaged shooting hand. "I hurt it last week and jammed a knuckle against Riverside," he said. "I put up a lot of shots in practice yesterday getting used to the tape on my hand. "We haven't had a lead like that all year, especially on the road. "It feels good to get a road win, that's the most important thing." Fullerton completes a stretch of six out of seven games on the road next week with contests at Cal State Northridge and Long Beach State, the latter on ESPNU.
The Saginaw Spirit beat the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 4-1 Friday night at The Dow Event Center of Saginaw. Goalie Mavric Parks earned the game's first star honors by backstopping the team to the tune of 41 saves on 42 shots, and winger Josh Shalla tallied two goals to assume the top posting in the league's goal scoring rankings with 29 total goals on the season. The Spirit lead the OHL Western Conference with 48 points and a record of 22-7-3-1. The Spirit fired off three consecutive goals to open the game and peg a three goal lead. Winger Jordan Szwarz notched a power play goal at 10:23 in the first period to start the scoring spree, with assists courtesy defensemen Brad Walch and Joe Underwood. Center Vincent Trocheck would make it 2-0 Spirit with a power play goal at 16:36 in the second from defensemen Ryan O'Connor and Peter Hermenegildo. Winger Josh Shalla rounded out scoring with a short handed tally at 17:55 in the second from defenseman Matt Ashman and Szwarz. Szwarz's assist marked his 100th in his career with the Spirit. Saginaw entered the third period with a three goal advantage but Sault Ste. Marie looked to reduce the deficit late in the frame when Sproul tallied a goal at 11:01 in the frame from Catenacci and Cousins. The Spirit quickly answered however, with Shalla scoring his league high 29th goal of the season from Walch and Szwarz at the 12:44 mark. Spirit goalie Mavric Parks earned the game's first star honors with 41 saves on 42 shots, while Hounds netminder Matt Murray posted 16 saves on 20 shots.
The Saginaw Spirit battled back from an early three goal deficit to force extra time, losing 6-5 after a seven round shootout. Saginaw earns a point despite the loss, moving their point total to 26 and their record to 12-2-1-1. Newly acquired center Mathew Sisca tallied two goals in his Spirit debut, while former Knight Matt Ashman netted two assists against his former teammates. The Spirit opened scoring in the first period, with center Mathew Sisca scoring at the 5:19 mark from defenseman Alex Lepkowski. The goal marked Sisca's first in Spirit uniform since arriving via trade earlier in the day. The Knights quickly answered with four consecutive goals giving them a 4-1 lead over the Spirit. Winger Stephen Sanza tallied a goal at 17:15 in the first from winger Tyler J. Brown and winger Chris DeSousa. Winger Andreas Athanasiou scored less than a minute later at 17:50 to give the Knights the lead, courtesy assists from center Daniel Erlich and winger Vladislav Namestnikov. The Knights momentum would carry into the second period, where Erlich scored his sixth of the season at the 2:52 mark from Namestnikov and Athanasiou. A power play goal tallied by defenseman Michael D'Orazio from Erlich and winger Colin Martin at 7:38 in the second would cap off the Knights' scoring spree and give them a three goal advantage over the Spirit. The Spirit would rally moments later however, fighting their way back into the game with three straight goals. Defenseman Ryan O'Connor would score at 9:29 in the second from center Ivan Telegin to reduce the deficit, then moments later winger Josh Shalla tallied his tenth of the season from center Brandon Saad and defenseman Matt Ashman at 12:13 to move the score to 4-3. Sisca would notch his second goal of the night at the 15:58 mark courtesy assists from Ashman and Telegin to tie up the game at four apiece. Sisca's second goal would drive London goalie Igor Bobkov from net, to be replaced by Michael Houser. The change temporarily stymied Saginaw's momentum, and the Knights would tally a goal in the final seconds of the frame to retake their lead. D'Orazio notched his second goal of the night at 19:24, a power play marker from defenseman Scott Harrington and Erlich to move the score to 5-4. The Spirit would tie up the game in the opening minutes of the third period, thanks to a goal from center Vincent Trocheck from Saad and O'Connor at the 3:07 mark. The two teams would continue to battle in the third period, but neither team was able to secure the lead and the game moved through a 5:00 minute 4-on-4 overtime and into a shootout. The shootout saw seven rounds before a final decision could be reached, but in the end it was the Knights that squeaked out the victory and secured the two points. London's Namestnikov tallied the game winning goal in the shootout. Spirit goalie Mavric Parks turned aside 42 of 47 shots, while starting Knights goaltender Igor Bobkov posted 14 saves on 18 shots. Michael Houser tallied 17 saves on 18 shots in relief of Bobkov.
