Saginaw Spirit vs Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 12/17/10

The Saginaw Spirit beat the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 4-1 Friday night at The Dow Event Center of Saginaw. Goalie Mavric Parks earned the game's first star honors by backstopping the team to the tune of 41 saves on 42 shots, and winger Josh Shalla tallied two goals to assume the top posting in the league's goal scoring rankings with 29 total goals on the season. The Spirit lead the OHL Western Conference with 48 points and a record of 22-7-3-1. The Spirit fired off three consecutive goals to open the game and peg a three goal lead. Winger Jordan Szwarz notched a power play goal at 10:23 in the first period to start the scoring spree, with assists courtesy defensemen Brad Walch and Joe Underwood. Center Vincent Trocheck would make it 2-0 Spirit with a power play goal at 16:36 in the second from defensemen Ryan O'Connor and Peter Hermenegildo. Winger Josh Shalla rounded out scoring with a short handed tally at 17:55 in the second from defenseman Matt Ashman and Szwarz. Szwarz's assist marked his 100th in his career with the Spirit. Saginaw entered the third period with a three goal advantage but Sault Ste. Marie looked to reduce the deficit late in the frame when Sproul tallied a goal at 11:01 in the frame from Catenacci and Cousins. The Spirit quickly answered however, with Shalla scoring his league high 29th goal of the season from Walch and Szwarz at the 12:44 mark. Spirit goalie Mavric Parks earned the game's first star honors with 41 saves on 42 shots, while Hounds netminder Matt Murray posted 16 saves on 20 shots.
