The Saginaw Spirit battled back from an early three goal deficit to force extra time, losing 6-5 after a seven round shootout. Saginaw earns a point despite the loss, moving their point total to 26 and their record to 12-2-1-1. Newly acquired center Mathew Sisca tallied two goals in his Spirit debut, while former Knight Matt Ashman netted two assists against his former teammates. The Spirit opened scoring in the first period, with center Mathew Sisca scoring at the 5:19 mark from defenseman Alex Lepkowski. The goal marked Sisca's first in Spirit uniform since arriving via trade earlier in the day. The Knights quickly answered with four consecutive goals giving them a 4-1 lead over the Spirit. Winger Stephen Sanza tallied a goal at 17:15 in the first from winger Tyler J. Brown and winger Chris DeSousa. Winger Andreas Athanasiou scored less than a minute later at 17:50 to give the Knights the lead, courtesy assists from center Daniel Erlich and winger Vladislav Namestnikov. The Knights momentum would carry into the second period, where Erlich scored his sixth of the season at the 2:52 mark from Namestnikov and Athanasiou. A power play goal tallied by defenseman Michael D'Orazio from Erlich and winger Colin Martin at 7:38 in the second would cap off the Knights' scoring spree and give them a three goal advantage over the Spirit. The Spirit would rally moments later however, fighting their way back into the game with three straight goals. Defenseman Ryan O'Connor would score at 9:29 in the second from center Ivan Telegin to reduce the deficit, then moments later winger Josh Shalla tallied his tenth of the season from center Brandon Saad and defenseman Matt Ashman at 12:13 to move the score to 4-3. Sisca would notch his second goal of the night at the 15:58 mark courtesy assists from Ashman and Telegin to tie up the game at four apiece. Sisca's second goal would drive London goalie Igor Bobkov from net, to be replaced by Michael Houser. The change temporarily stymied Saginaw's momentum, and the Knights would tally a goal in the final seconds of the frame to retake their lead. D'Orazio notched his second goal of the night at 19:24, a power play marker from defenseman Scott Harrington and Erlich to move the score to 5-4. The Spirit would tie up the game in the opening minutes of the third period, thanks to a goal from center Vincent Trocheck from Saad and O'Connor at the 3:07 mark. The two teams would continue to battle in the third period, but neither team was able to secure the lead and the game moved through a 5:00 minute 4-on-4 overtime and into a shootout. The shootout saw seven rounds before a final decision could be reached, but in the end it was the Knights that squeaked out the victory and secured the two points. London's Namestnikov tallied the game winning goal in the shootout. Spirit goalie Mavric Parks turned aside 42 of 47 shots, while starting Knights goaltender Igor Bobkov posted 14 saves on 18 shots. Michael Houser tallied 17 saves on 18 shots in relief of Bobkov.
Spirit forward Josh Shalla tallied a hat trick in the team's 7-1 victory over the Sarnia Sting Wednesday night at the RBC Centre of Sarnia. Shalla's three goals brings his Spirit career total to 118, tied with alumni Ryan McDonough for the team's all-time goal scoring record. The first period saw Sarnia getting the first two power plays of the game, but on their second power play, Brandon Saad would score a breakaway goal for Saginaw. The shorthanded goal was the only goal of the first period. The Spirit came out strong in the second period, with Josh Shalla setting new marks in the team's record books with three consecutive goals. Shalla scored his 37th of the season 1:28 seconds into the second period to give the Spirit a 2-0 advantage, then eight minutes later scored again with assists to Brandon Saad and Michael Fine. Shalla would score his third goal of the game for the hat trick on his next shift, at the 11:52 mark courtesy Justin Kea and Terry Trafford. The Spirit entered the second intermission up 4-0. The Sting would answer to avoid the shutout at the start of the third period, with Brett Thompson sliding a top shelf shot past Paterson. Ryan Spooner and Alex Basson assisted on the goal. The Spirit quickly responded with three rapid goals in the latter half of the third period, the first coming off the stick of Vadim Khlopotov at 9:16 courtesy assists from Vincent Trocheck and Steven Strong. Terry Trafford made it 6-1 moments later at the 11:57 mark, notching in his eighth of the season thanks to an assist from Kea. Trocheck rounded out the scoring and secured the Spirit victory with a power play goal at 17:21, with assists from Garret Ross and Ramon Lopez. Spirit goaltender Jake Paterson stopped 25 out of the 26 shots fired at him, while Sting netminder J.P. Anderson tallied 27 saves on 34 shots.
The Saginaw Spirit won Friday night 5 to 2, defeating the Guelph Storm in the first game of a three game road trip. Saginaw jumped out to a 4 -- 0 first period lead that included Spirit Goaltender Clint Windsor's stop of a penalty shot by Guelph's Tanner Richard. Windsor made 35 saves on 37 shots and was the first star of the game. Saginaw's Carlos Amestoy got the Spirit started early with his 3rd goal of the season, at 1:26, with the assist going to Eric Locke. Saginaw added to the lead with goals by Dalton Young on the power play, assisted by Archibald & Trocheck at 10:21. Followed by Vincent Trocheck, unassisted and Justin Kea assisted by Ringuette at 18:19. The Spirit out shot Guelph 16 to 8 in the first taking a 4 to 0 lead into the first intermission. In the second, Guelph got on the scoreboard with a power play goal by Zak Mitchell, assisted by Finn and Menard at 14:45. The Storm out shot Saginaw 14 to 6 but could not beat Windsor again. In the third, Vincent Trocheck scored his 2nd goal of the game, 25th of the season on a power play with assists from Brandon Saad and Brad Walch at 2:41. Guelph answered with a goal from Andrey Pedan assisted by Menard & Mitchell at 10:18 but could get no closer. Saginaw now has 49 points in 49 games and improved its record to 22 wins, 22 losses, 0 overtime losses and 5 shootout losses. Ten Spirit players picked up points on the night led by Vincent Trocheck's 2 goals and 1 assist.
A record-breaking crowd of 5,688 fans packed into The Dow Event Center to witness the 5th annual MCVI Shocks & Saves game presented by Biotronik. The Saginaw Spirit would fall to the London Knights by the score of 6-3. Josh Shalla started off the Spirit scoring by netting a goal past Michael Houser. The goal was assisted by Brandon Saad. With 8:30 to go in the first, Max Domi scored the Knights' first goal to tie it up 1-1. His goal was assisted by Greg McKegg and Jared Knight. The score did not stay tied for long, as Josh Shalla scored his second goal of the period. Michael Fine and Brandon Saad assisted his goal. The first period ended with a score of 2-1 Spirit over Knights. Jimmy Lodge increased the Spirit lead to 3-1 by scoring the first goal of the second period. Carlos Amestoy and Dalton Young assisted the shot. Domi then scored another goal for the Knights, again being assisted by McKegg and Knight. With 1:50 left to play in the second, Austin Watson ties up the score 3-3 thanks to an assist from Tommy Hughes and Vladislav Namestnikov. The Knights would take the lead early on in the third period for the first time during the contest. Matt Rupert scored for the Knights, assisted by Chris Tierney and Jared Knight. A minute later, Seth Griffith scored their fifth goal. He was assisted by Colin Martin and Vladislav Namestnikov. Following Griffith's goal, Max Domi scored again for the hat trick. The Knights defeat the Spirit with a score of 6-3.
The Spirit dominated the Guelph Storm 8-3. Scoring for Spirit was spread out amongst six players: Eric Locke, Brad Walch, Terry Trafford, Michael Fine, Josh Shalla and Nick Moutrey. Spirit came out strong in the first period. Brad Walch took a long shot, missed, but Eric Locke tapped it in for a goal of his own. At the 9:52 mark, right-winger Justin Auger notched a goal of his own to tie the game 1-1. Defensemen Daniel Poliziani and Ryan Horvat assisted Auger's goal. Augar's goal would not be enough to stop the Spirit defense. At the 12:42 mark, right-winger Terry Trafford took a shot and landed a goal to take the lead over the Storm. Defensemen Brandon Archibald and center Justin Kea assisted Trafford's goal. Trafford's goal would not be enough to stop the Storm. Augar notched his second goal of the game with a wrist shot from the hashmarks to tie the game 2-2. Tyler Bertuzzi and Horvat assisted Augar's second goal. Seconds later, right-winger, Zach Mitchell tapped in a goal of his own to make the Storm have their first lead of the game. Jason Dickinson and right-winger, Cody McNaughton assisted Mitchell's goal. The Storm would take the lead at the end of the first. The second period would be an even battle amongst the two teams. At the 15:39 mark, Brad Walch scored his first goal of the season on the power play. Walch's goal tied the game 3-3. Brandon Saad and Josh Shalla assisted Walch's first goal. Moments later, right-winger Michael Fine finishes a rebound off of a shot by Saad and just like that the Spirit lead by one 4-3. Locke and Saad assisted Fine's goal. Less than a minute later, Fine turns around and lands his second goal of the game, putting the Spirit in the lead by two goals! Defenseman Brandon Archibald and Shalla assisted Fine's goal. The Spirit would hold their two-goal lead heading into the third period. The third period started off to a fast start amongst both teams. Shalla hung around the net and landed himself a shorthanded goal. He now has full possession of second place on the Spirit career goals list. Saad and Fine assisted Shalla's goal. At the 14:45 mark Shalla snipes his second goal from under the crossbar. His goal lifts the Spirit score to 7-3. Fine and Saad assisted Shalla's goal. At the 17:48 mark, right-winger Nick Moutrey scores a goal of his own to make the score 8-3 over the Storm! Left-winger Vadim Khlopotov and defenseman Jamie Oleksiak assisted Moutrey's goal. Moutrey's goal would seal the win over the Storm with a final score of 8-3.
NOTE: NO SOUND ON THE 1ST THREE GOALS The Saginaw Spirit fell to the Guelph Storm 7-3 in regulation Monday night at The Dow Event Center of Saginaw, with the Storm now possessing a 2-1 advantage in the best-of-seven playoff series between the two teams. The two teams traded goals in the first period, ending the frame with a 2-2 tie. Guelph opened with winger Taylor Beck scoring at 1:49 from winger Richard Panik and center Peter Holland, but moments later at the 4:11 Saginaw center John McFarland scored from center Vincent Trocheck and winger Brandon Saad. Spirit winger Micky Sartoretto made it 2-1 at 8:22 in the frame, his goal coming from winger Anthony Camara and defenseman Brad Walch. The Storm would round out first period scoring and tie up the contest at two apiece before breaking for intermission. Center Michael Latta scored a power play goal at the 10:39 mark from winger Cody McNaughton. The Guelph jumped to a commanding three goal lead in the second period. Beck scored at the 2:51 mark with a power play goal assisted by Holland and winger Daniel Erlich to move the score to 3-2. Erlich followed suit with a goal at the 10:52 mark from defenseman Matt Finn and winger Zack Mitchell, then moments later defenseman Sam Lofquist would make it 5-2 with a goal at 15:43 that saw assists from Latta and defenseman Andrey Pedan. The Spirit would open third period scoring to move the score to 5-3, with defenseman Ryan O'Connor notching his second of the post season at 2:01 from rookies Terry Trafford and Justin Kea. The Storm would quickly counter however, with two goals securing the Guelph win. Latta scored a power play marker from Panik and Lofquist at 6:10 in the period, then Holland scored another Storm power play goal at 15:51 in the frame from Lofquist and Pedan. Spirit goalie Mavric Parks posted 14 saves on 19 shots in 35:43 minutes of play, and Tadeas Galansky tallied 14 saves on 16 shots in 24:17 minutes of action after relieving Parks. Storm goalie Brandon Foote posted 37 saves on 40 shots.
The Saginaw Spirit completed a come from behind victory to beat the Owen Sound Attack 4-3 in overtime. The Attack lead 3-1 to open the third period but the Spirit tallied two later in the frame to even up the score and defenseman Ryan O'Connor notched the game winner in overtime to secure the Spirit victory. O'Connor, who earned the game's first star honors, tallied two goals and one assist on the night. The Spirit lead the OHL West Division with 70 points and a record of 33-16-3-1. The Spirit started off things early, scoring :20 seconds into the contest to make it 1-0. Center John McFarland notched his twentieth of the season in the play, with wingers Jordan Szwarz and Josh Shalla earning the assists. The Attack controlled the scoring in the second period, with the first goal a short hander tallied by an unassisted Liam Heelis. Owen Sound's Robby Mignardi moved the score to 2-1 with a goal from winger Garrett Wilson and center Joey Hishon at the 16:49 mark. The third period saw the Attack take a healthy two goal lead with defenseman Jay Gilbert at 6:32 in the frame. The Spirit mounted a comeback in the third period, scoring two consecutive goals to tie up the game and force overtime. Defenseman Ryan O'Connor tallied his third of the season from defenseman Dalton Prout and Center Ivan Telegin at 12:40, then at 17:07 in the frame Telegin notched a power play goal from Szwarz and O'Connor. With the game tied at three apiece, the two teams squared off for a 4-on-4 5:00 minute overtime. Winger Brandon Saad and center Vincent Trocheck broke away from the Attack's defense to feed the puck to O'Connor, who tallied his second of the night to secure the Spirit win and the two points. Spirit goalie Mavric Parks tallied 34 saves on 37 shots, while Owen Sound netminder Jordan Binnington posted 31 saves on 35 shots
The Saginaw Spirit beat the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 4-1 Friday night at The Dow Event Center of Saginaw. Goalie Mavric Parks earned the game's first star honors by backstopping the team to the tune of 41 saves on 42 shots, and winger Josh Shalla tallied two goals to assume the top posting in the league's goal scoring rankings with 29 total goals on the season. The Spirit lead the OHL Western Conference with 48 points and a record of 22-7-3-1. The Spirit fired off three consecutive goals to open the game and peg a three goal lead. Winger Jordan Szwarz notched a power play goal at 10:23 in the first period to start the scoring spree, with assists courtesy defensemen Brad Walch and Joe Underwood. Center Vincent Trocheck would make it 2-0 Spirit with a power play goal at 16:36 in the second from defensemen Ryan O'Connor and Peter Hermenegildo. Winger Josh Shalla rounded out scoring with a short handed tally at 17:55 in the second from defenseman Matt Ashman and Szwarz. Szwarz's assist marked his 100th in his career with the Spirit. Saginaw entered the third period with a three goal advantage but Sault Ste. Marie looked to reduce the deficit late in the frame when Sproul tallied a goal at 11:01 in the frame from Catenacci and Cousins. The Spirit quickly answered however, with Shalla scoring his league high 29th goal of the season from Walch and Szwarz at the 12:44 mark. Spirit goalie Mavric Parks earned the game's first star honors with 41 saves on 42 shots, while Hounds netminder Matt Murray posted 16 saves on 20 shots.
