Peak View: Piton Riviere Noire/Black River Peak (828m), Mauritius
The 'Piton Riviere Noire' or its English name 'Black River Peak' is the highest peak of Mauritius with an evelation of 828m. It lies inside the 'Black River National Park'. The peak shape of a pyramid offers a wonderful roundview of the 60k-diameter island. The sea can be seen in all cardinal points. The path starts from the car park next to 'George Viewpoint' at road B103 - some 6k after the valley of 'Chamarel'. It is recommended to start rigth from the sealevel at the West-coast valley 'Case Royale' with a mountainbike to the described starting point. It is a steep but beautiful road of some 9k to the mentioned parking of an altitude of 700m. It is about 4k and +300m (because of surmounting several presummits) from the professionally signposted starting point to the peak. The narrow path is really lovely and it is leading through a tropical wood. The very last ascent of just 50 height meters to the 'Black River Peak' (828m) is a challenging thing for normal hikers. A significant gradient of more than 50 degrees does require both courage and sportsmanship. However there is a security chain to hold on this last climb. Note: it is not recommendable to climb the peak after wet weather conditions. The duration from 'Case Royale' with MTB to the parking is 1,5 hours approx. The hiking itself will take around 1 hour from the parking to the summit (one-way).
