During the Brooklyn Nets - Milwaukee Bucks game 2 Eastern Conference Semifinals matchup, Kevin Durant (KD) put on a nasty sequence vs Giannis - a triple hesi hop double cross into an and-1 midrange jumper. The play highlights key skills, details, and biomechanics of KD’s game that any hooper can learn from. Lets take a closer look. The sequence starts with KD mini-hopping off his left leg - the same hand as the dribble - into a hesitation (hesi) and then left to right dribble crossover. He goes into another hop hesi here and this angle is much cleaner so lets break this one down. The hesi-hop setup does four key things: 1 - It generates a rhythm that optimizes the rest of KD’s movements. In movement science speak, it “primes the system” 2 - Creates deception because KD sets up the same way each time which limits the tells so the defender is guessing and/or reacting, as Giannis is here - a step behind. The hesi is the trunk KD”s movement tree and everything else branches off of it. 3 - It gives KD more time to read the defender’s reaction, process, and then proceed accordingly. Information is power. Here KD sees that Giannis is trying to catchup after the first cross so double crosses back over - dropping his hips to lower his center of gravity which results in better balance and change of direction and coming onto the inside of his left ankle to more completely deload that leg. 4 - Now we’re at the final sequence and fourth and final key - biomechanical advantages. KD hops off the same hand as his dribble because it allows him to use the other leg to push-off downhill, staying up on his forefoot with the downward force from the hop pre-tensioning the achilles and calf complex to generate a powerful forward thrust - aka the stretch-shorten cycle or SSC - that quickly shifts weight to his lead left leg. His left knee extensors - mainly the quads - and calf complex are now loaded to generate a powerful stretch shorten cycle and he’s up on his right forefoot (hard to see here) to again tension the achilles and calf complex. He quickly springs upwards having created enough space to get a clean look and it’s cash from there. That’s a bad man.
If you didn’t watch the game, you may not know that Luka was struggling with a neck injury throughout the entire game. Visibly wincing and being in pain, his production was clearly being impacted. And even tho I’m not saying that this is the only reason for their loss in game 4, it could change everything for the rest of the series. What up everybody my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it. Doncic ended the game with 19 points on 9 for 24 shooting. And after being unstoppable for the first 3 games, you know that something was wrong here. Luka didn’t want to make excuses postgame and focused on the loss instead. Still, that doesn’t change the fact that the injury is making things much harder for him on the court, as if the Clippers aren’t enough. And speaking of them, lost in this whole thing is the performance of the 2 LA superstars. Kawhi is having an unbelievable series with 33 points and 8.5 rebounds. All of that while shooting a blistering 63% from the field. That’s virtually unstoppable. As you can see he loves the right side of the floor, of course owning the midrange. The Klaw has been torturing the Mavs with his backdown turnaround jumpers, regardless of who the defender is. Right here on the wing, he gets a switch away from Kleber who’s Dallas’ best big defender and you can see the entire team is clearing out on the left side, leaving Luka on an island with Kawhi. He attacks, the half spin, the leaning shot and the bucket. Again, with the slower Boban in the game, on the pick and roll, Leonard has all this space to just raise up and shoot from his favorite spot on the court. He does that and easily knocks it in. But he’s even deadlier every time he decides to put his head down and go all the way to the basket. There is nobody on the Dallas roster who’s been able to consistently stop him in his intention to attack the rim. Even with Kleber on him here, the Clippers isolate him again, and you see the determination to go all the way and look at the strength here as he bumps Maxi to the side for a layup. That was too strong, and this is too quick on the perimeter, as you can see the double screen setup up top for him to curl. But instead the Klaw flies by with the crossover and there’s no way Kleber can catch him as we check out this 2 handed dunk. But I have to point out Paul George deserves just as much credit honestly. Think about it: If the Mavs won game 3 and went up 3-0 everybody would disregard the fact that they hit 20 threes on a mind boggling 51%. Instead, people would take the low hanging fruit and instantly blame Pandemic P for it right?! Thing is, Pandemic P is an automatic 25 point per game scorer on 50% from the field so far in these 4 games. And almost 8 rebounds to go along with that. Sure, his 3 point shooting has been extremely bad so far but similarly to Leonard, there is no answer for PG when he goes inside. Luckily for him however, George doesn’t need to defend his good performance from the haters just yet, since the Clippers have tied the series all of a sudden, winning 2 on the road after losing the first 2 at home, and having the entire NBA world write them off. Talk about a wild series. Most importantly however, their sense of urgency and defensive intensity has been ramped up to playoff type level. After the initial 127 and 113 points that Dallas put up in games 1 and 2, they were only allowed 108 and only 81 last night. Although there were some wide open misses that the Mavs shooters should have knocked down and 5-30 from downtown wasn’t entirely because of the defense, the fact remains that games 3 and 4 the Clippers really had their backs against the wall and had to go all out on both ends of the court to get back in this thing. And they did that. Now with the Doncic injury, and going back home, the momentum seems to be entirely on the LA side. This matchup has proved to be wild however and I’m looking forward to a pivotal game 5 in Staples. Let’s see what happens. Let me know in the comments who you got in the next one. That’s it for now. Twitter: https://www.Twitter.com/SeanCostelloJr So last night one great game I got the chance to watch on NBA League Pass was the San Antonio Spurs playing the Celtics in Boston and Jayson Tatum put up an insane performance for Boston as he dropped 60 points and helped them grab the 143-140 victory in their home arena. However, even despite the Spurs now having lost 2 games in a row following last night’s game I think this team has actually played very well lately I’m not sure how well this video will do in terms of views and such or if anyone cares too much about the Spurs but I think it’s time to talk about why this Spurs team can actually cause some trouble in the 2021 Playoffs and why they’re such a dangerous matchup for whoever they face in the 2021 Play-In Tournament. the Spurs have now lost two straight games as they lost that extremely tight overtime game against the Celtics last night and two nights earlier on Wednesday they lost a another tough game against the Miami Heat as they lost by a score of 116-111. Even despite losing two straight tho the Spurs have now won 5 of their last 8 games and they played very well over this recent stretch as they beat the team that now holds the NBA’s best record, the Phoenix Suns and they also beat the extremely hot Washington Wizards as well over this recent stretch. This Spurs team was already a very solid defensive team for the 2020-21 Season, but now they’ve taken their game to another level and stepped things up as they are a top 10 team in many categories in terms of holding their opponents to the 10th least amount of a specific stat. The Spurs have also been a top 10 team in multiple different defensive categories including defensive rating, lowest amount of points scored off of turnovers and lowest amount of points scored off of fastbreaks as well. one of the other reasons I think this Spurs team isn’t a team that should be slept on really is the individual play from their young players. The Spurs have had 7 guys averaging double digit point totals for them this season if we don’t include LeMarcus Aldridge as he of course had to retire after his short time in Brooklyn this season, but another guy it’s important to mention is their young guard Derrick White as he may not return this season so that’s a huge blow for this Spurs team as he’s one of the key players in their young core. However, even without White, they've had 6 players average double digit scoring totals this season and scoring isn’t just the only important thing when it comes to a team playing well, especially with this Spurs team. DeMar Derozan is averaging career highs, Keldon Johnson and Patty Mills are offensively thriving and big man Jakob Poeltl is also on a tear. So today we’re going to talk about why this Spurs team is a dangerous 2021 Playoff team and why this team needs to be taken serious in the 2021 Play-In Tournament and the 2021 NBA Playoffs. But under Sean Marks, the Nets were able to build their superteam through incredible contract moves that allowed them to free up a ton of cap space allowing major players to play for them. We are yet to see this team at its full capacity as injuries continue to plague them but it seems evident that this new Nets team is incredibly dominant. Looking at these 2 videos from Devin Booker and Chris Paul, you can understand a lot about the success of the Phoenix Suns this season, and how they won in a close game against the Utah Jazz last night. So let me show you just how unguardable these 2 can be. What up everybody my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it. The strategy was putting Gobert in the pick and roll. Right here good screen by Ayton, Rudy doesn’t come out to contest, Booker raises up and knocks it down. And look at this setup for Chris Paul. The high screen, he accelerates, and Rudy has to drop to protect the basket. Paul stops on a dime, fires and scores. Having players who are 52.5 and 48.9% respectively from midrange is elite, so I guess that’s kind of like pick your poison type of situation. Either the big man is gonna commit to the switch and leave them room to blow by for the layup, or do it haphazardly like this where he’ll just show and wait for the main defender to recover, hoping that they’ll be on time, or that these 2 sharpshooters from the Suns are not gonna hit a lot their shots. Which last night wasn’t the case, as Booker exploded for 35 points, while Chris Paul was also great with 29 and 9 on 50% shooting. Classic point god. Look at this, after the screen, in this situation there is space for him so he fires up and swishes it. But when Gobert commits to him and fully switches, look at the laser pass in traffic to find the cutting Ayton. Amazing. And this was the story throughout the entire night. The entire season actually as Phoenix is firmly in the number 2 spot in the entire league right behind the Jazz. When you have CP3 on your team everything seems to click and players seem to get better. Devin Booker is one of the biggest beneficiaries of this mentorship and Chris was quick to give him credit after the game. One of the things that won’t show up in the boxscore for Devin is a play like this one. Doesn’t have to score to impact the game. Right here recognizes the opportunity, sets a back screen for Cam Johnson who is wide open and knocks down the three, a clutch basket late in the game to give the Suns a 5 point lead which they’ll ultimately be able to keep it to win this game. I promise that later on I will make a more detailed video about how both Book and this entire team as a whole have been able to completely turn things around from a losing franchise to a number 2 seed in 1 season, of course all of that because the point god himself. Chris Paul. As for the Jazz, while these 2 losses in a row don’t look the best, especially being from 2 potential playoff rivals in Phoenix and Dallas, I would like to say 1 thing. I love the fact that they have stayed competitive in both games despite shooting way below their average on threes, which has been their identity so far this season as the team with the most makes from downtown. They still got the shots they get so in my opinion it’s just a matter of getting back on track and continue to make them. After all, they were on a 9 game winning streak just before these 2 games, and they’re still the best team in the entire league, so I wouldn’t be too concerned at this moment if I’m Quin Snyder. But yeah, for all of you young hoopers- master the midrange and the pick and roll as you can see it can be an unstoppable weapon in your arsenal. That’s it for now, subscribe and talk to you in the next one. Peace out.
