During the Brooklyn Nets - Milwaukee Bucks game 2 Eastern Conference Semifinals matchup, Kevin Durant (KD) put on a nasty sequence vs Giannis - a triple hesi hop double cross into an and-1 midrange jumper. The play highlights key skills, details, and biomechanics of KD’s game that any hooper can learn from. Lets take a closer look. The sequence starts with KD mini-hopping off his left leg - the same hand as the dribble - into a hesitation (hesi) and then left to right dribble crossover. He goes into another hop hesi here and this angle is much cleaner so lets break this one down. The hesi-hop setup does four key things: 1 - It generates a rhythm that optimizes the rest of KD’s movements. In movement science speak, it “primes the system” 2 - Creates deception because KD sets up the same way each time which limits the tells so the defender is guessing and/or reacting, as Giannis is here - a step behind. The hesi is the trunk KD”s movement tree and everything else branches off of it. 3 - It gives KD more time to read the defender’s reaction, process, and then proceed accordingly. Information is power. Here KD sees that Giannis is trying to catchup after the first cross so double crosses back over - dropping his hips to lower his center of gravity which results in better balance and change of direction and coming onto the inside of his left ankle to more completely deload that leg. 4 - Now we’re at the final sequence and fourth and final key - biomechanical advantages. KD hops off the same hand as his dribble because it allows him to use the other leg to push-off downhill, staying up on his forefoot with the downward force from the hop pre-tensioning the achilles and calf complex to generate a powerful forward thrust - aka the stretch-shorten cycle or SSC - that quickly shifts weight to his lead left leg. His left knee extensors - mainly the quads - and calf complex are now loaded to generate a powerful stretch shorten cycle and he’s up on his right forefoot (hard to see here) to again tension the achilles and calf complex. He quickly springs upwards having created enough space to get a clean look and it’s cash from there. That’s a bad man.
