PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/foolishbaseball TWEETER: https://twitter.com/FoolishBB MERCH: https://shop.jomboymedia.com/collections/foolish-baseball ________________________________________ This one's about the best and worst umpires, at least with regards to calling the MLB strike zone. Umpire Angel Hernandez is probably the most infamous at the moment, but do you know Pat Hoberg? John Libka? Alan Porter? They're gonna be umpiring the strike zone for a lot longer than Angel Hernandez, Laz Diaz, or CB Bucknor. In this episode of Baseball Bits, a Foolish Baseball production, there will be plenty of time to look at some MLB worst calls and MLB best calls, especially with regards to the MLB strike zone. But we'll also dig deeper on the subject of Robo-umps, the Automated Ball Strike System that may soon replace human strike zone callers. UmpScoreCards is a fairly new, public-facing way to grade umpires, and we'll be leaning on their work heavily to find the truth. Does MLB have an umpire problem? Kyle Schwarber seems to think so. But maybe it's the K-Zone that has us fooled. _______________________________________ UmpScoreCards: https://www.umpscorecards.com/ UmpScores: https://www.umpscores.com/ Hardball Times on QuesTec: https://tht.fangraphs.com/tht-live/does_questec_affect_the_strike_zone/ Barry Bonds on QuestTec: https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-2003-06-11-0306120051-story.html Soundtrack from Maxo: https://soundcloud.com/maxoelectronic https://maxoisnuts.bandcamp.com/

Ejection 126 - After Brian Knight's Injury, HP Umpire Pat Hoberg Ejects Aaron Boone Over Balk Call

In our haste to get our latest video out, we erred and stated that a balk should be called when a pitcher disengages while in the process of coming set. This is incorrect. A pitcher can legally disengage the rubber while moving his hands toward becoming set, but not yet getting there, as long as it's in a continuous motion (and not a start-stop movement). We apologize for any confusion. We promise to always strive to be perfect, no matter how unattainable that goal is. Like on the field, we want to be better than before and not repeat our mistakes. Thanks for your understanding and thoughtful discussion! -The CCS Team After Brian Knight exited Monday's Yankees-Royals after an early head injury, replacement HP Umpire Pat Hoberg ejected New York manager Aaron Boone for arguing a balk call against pitcher Jonathan Loaisiga. Report: https://www.closecallsports.com/2021/08/mlb-ejection-126-pat-hoberg-1-aaron.html Injury Scout: Brian Knight struck in jaw by pitched ball that bounced in the dirt: https://www.closecallsports.com/2021/08/injury-scout-pitch-bounces-into-brian.html It is a start-stop balk if the pitcher starts a motion, then stops, and then steps off. *Addendum, it is not a balk if the pitcher simply steps off prior to coming to Set Position, as long as it is in one continuous motion. It is, however, a balk if the pitcher makes any motion naturally associated with delivery or, informally known, commits a start-stop violation.
