HP Umpire Carlos Torres ejected Orioles infield coach Miguel Cairo for arguing a denied ABS challenge to Baltimore catcher Samuel Basallo for taking too long to challenge? Kind of? This sequence was so problematic, it had me defending MIGUEL CAIRO. Cubs batter Matt Shaw hit an infield single in San Diego when Padres 3B Ty France picked up a batted ball as it rolled along the foul line, but HP Umpire Dan Merzel called it fair. So... was it fair or foul? Turns out, this play is a lot more complicated than it should be. https://www.closecallsports.com/2026/04/about-cubs-lf-matt-shaws-fair-infield.html Buy Me a Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/closecallsports Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Lindsay715 Discord: https://discord.gg/eFXWr7yHWM Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CloseCallSports Twitter: https://twitter.com/CloseCallSports
HP Umpire John Bacon and 3B Umpire Adrian Johnson ejected a total of eight players and managers during Sunday's Mariners-Angels game after a 2nd inning HBP that followed 1st inning warnings. Report: https://www.closecallsports.com/2022/06/mlb-ejections-077-84-bacon-johnson-sea.html CloseCallSports on Discord: https://discord.gg/eFXWr7yHWM In total, HP Umpire Bacon ejected Angels pitcher Andrew Wantz and manager Phil Nevin for intentionally throwing at an opposing batter after warnings, 3B Umpire Adrian Johnson ejected Mariners LF Jesse Winker and manager Scott Servais for fighting, and HP Umpire Bacon ejected Mariners SS JP Crawford, CF Julio Rodriguez, and Angels pitchers Ryan Tepera and Raisel Iglesias for fighting.
HP Umpire Cory Blaser ejected Braves pitching coach Rick Kranitz after a walk to Rangers batter Eli White in Texas. Report: https://www.closecallsports.com/2022/05/mlb-ejection-020-cory-blaser-1-rick.html HP Umpire Blaser, having ruled ball four on a 3-2 fastball from Atlanta pitcher Kyle Muller, asked 1B Umpire Shane Livensparger regarding whether White struck at the pitch, who affirmed on appeal that White had not swung and the pitch was a ball.
HP Umpire Jeremie Rehak ejected Cardinals DH Nolan Arenado and 1B Coach Stubby Clapp for their roles in a Mets-Cards fight situation in St Louis. Report: https://www.closecallsports.com/2022/04/mlb-ejections-014-15-jeremie-rehak-1-2.html After earlier HBP situations, including one which injured Mets player JD David, knocking him out of the game, Mets pitcher Yoan Lopez threw a first-pitch fastball in the bottom of the 8th inning inside and shoulder-high to batter Arenado for a called first ball, resulting in a benches-clearing incident after Arenado's response. In fight or potential fighting situations, including bench clearing brawls and otherwise, umpires are instructed to identify primary aggressors—who instigated the fight—and to eject that person (or multiple persons). In this situation, replays are clear that Arenado was that primary aggressor for actions, including grabbing and throwing New York catcher Tomas Nido to the side prior to the benches clearing. Similarly, Clapp was ejected for appearing to wrap and drag Mets player Pete Alfonso to the ground from behind. This is to be interpreted as an excessively violent act during a fight similar to throwing a punch and, accordingly, Clapp was removed from the game. Warnings, which had not previously been in place, were issued following the benches-clearing incident. Official Baseball Rule 6.02(c)(9) pertains to both intentionally pitching at the batter and the issuance of warnings and states that if the umpires deem the pitcher has intentionally pitched at the batter's head, the pitcher should be ejected "without hesitation" due to the danger of such an act. If intent is not ascribed, however, there can be no ejection unless the pitcher participates in the fight or instigates it through actions *that do not include the pitch thrown* (e.g., aggressive gestures, walking toward the plate, etc.). If the umpires do not deem the pitch intentional, although no ejection of the pitcher/manager may occur for "intentionally pitch at batter" reasons, warnings MAY be issued. Unlike ejections, warnings do not need intentional throwing at incidents for issuance, though coincidentally, they most often do occur as a result of such pitches. OBR 6.02(c)(9) Comment states: "If, in the umpire’s judgment, circumstances warrant, both teams may be officially “warned” prior to the game or at any time during the game."
HP Umpire Lance Barksdale ejected Cubs pitcher Keegan Thompson for throwing at Brewers batter Andrew McCutchen during a 9-0 Chicago victory over Milwaukee. Report: https://www.closecallsports.com/2022/04/mlb-ejection-003-lance-barksdale-1.html Several Cubs batters had been hit by pitches earlier in the game; no warnings had previously been issued. The intentional hit-by-pitch of McCutchen resulted in a benches-clearing incident for the second day in a row; two-thirds of the young MLB season have occurred on a day that featured a benches-clearing event.
When HP Umpire Laz Diaz called JD Martinez out on strikes, it set off a chain of controversy that ended with both Boston and Houston managers on the field arguing the same play. Article: https://www.closecallsports.com/2021/10/interference-in-boston-laz-diazs-astros.html With Red Sox runner Alex Verdugo on first base, batter Martinez took a 3-2 fastball from Astros pitcher Cristian Javier for a called third strike. With Verdugo running on the pitch, Astros catcher Martin Maldonado prepared to possibly throw to second base to retire Verdugo, but Maldonado never made that throw. In this analysis, we look at potential interference by retired batter Martinez and try to dissect what the criteria are for determining whether to call INT. While a throw isn't required for interference on this play, it sure helps and quite considerably so. By throwing, the catcher leaves no doubt in the umpire's mind as to their intent on the play: they want to throw the runner out. But by not throwing, for whatever reason, Maldonado gives the umpire ample doubt. Did the throw not happen because the catcher thought it was ball four (the computer strike zone thought so too)? Was it because Verdugo had an excellent jump and was going to be safe at second anyway? Or was it, lastly, because JD Martinez interfered? With this doubt, that opens the door to umpire judgment and Diaz here must have judged that the retired batter's actions did not impede or hinder the catcher from playing on the runner. Rule citations are OBR 6.01(a)(5) [professional baseball], NCAA 6-3-b [college], and NFHS 7-3-5 [high school ball].
When Milwaukee retired Atlanta batter Adam Duvall on a foul fly ball in Game 4 of the NLDS, Brian Snitker wanted to challenge the play. But we foresaw a problem - infield catch calls are not reviewable. Article: https://www.closecallsports.com/2021/10/brewers-braves-nlds-replays-infield-fly.html When HP Umpire Tony Randazzo's out call went to New York, the outcome of that conversation was apparent from Crew Chief Alfonso Marquez's action afterward. By removing the headset, giving no mechanic or other indication as to what the call was, and traveling directly toward the Braves' dugout to speak with manager Snitker, it was clear that the play had not been reviewed. Instead, the official record chalks it up to a rules check on an unreviewable play which means the out call (catch), not subject to review, didn't stand, didn't get confirmed, nor overturned, but simply was left untouched by video.
