In our haste to get our latest video out, we erred and stated that a balk should be called when a pitcher disengages while in the process of coming set. This is incorrect. A pitcher can legally disengage the rubber while moving his hands toward becoming set, but not yet getting there, as long as it's in a continuous motion (and not a start-stop movement). We apologize for any confusion. We promise to always strive to be perfect, no matter how unattainable that goal is. Like on the field, we want to be better than before and not repeat our mistakes. It is, however, a balk if the pitcher makes any motion naturally associated with delivery or, informally known, commits a start-stop violation.
