I will provide the key reasons for the Mountaineer loss, give team and key player stats, talk about what Bob Huggins had to say in his postgame press conference, go over the remaining schedule for the Mountaineers and will talk about my expectations for the Mountaineers the rest of the season. The Oklahoma Sooners traveled to Morgantown, WV on Wednesday, January 26 to take on the West Virginia Mountaineers. Both teams were in the midst of losing streaks, and it was the Sooners who came away with their streak snapped. Tanner Groves led the way with 21 points for the Sooners. He also pulled down 6 rebounds. His brother, Jacob chipped in 12 points, along with 12 from Umoja Gibson. The Mountaineers were led in scoring by Gabe Osabuohien, who poured in a West Virginia career high of 17. Jalen Bridges had 12 for West Virginia and Taz Sherman chipped in 11. The loss brings West Virginia's losing streak to 4 games as they prepare to take on Arkansas in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge on Saturday, January 29. Ole Miss Rebels backup quarterback, John Rhys Plumlee, has decided to enter the transfer portal. Plumlee rushed for over 1,000 yards as the starter for the Rebels back in 2019, but lost the job to Matt Corral after coach Lane Kiffin changed offensive coordinators from Rich Rodriguez to Jeff Lebby. Now, Plumlee wants to try his hand at another school to see if he can get back to being a starting quarterback again. Would Plumlee fit in at West Virginia? Minnesota Golden Gophers backup quarterback, Zack Annexstad, has entered his name into the transfer portal as well. After losing his starting job due to injury in 2018, Annexstad has been the backup for Tanner Morgan. After Morgan announced he was returning for his final year at Minnesota, Annexstad decided to move on from the Gophers program. Would he be a possible fit at West Virginia? Both teams have been dealing with depleted rosters due to players having Covid. Kansas State only had 7 total players for their last game against Texas.
