One of F1’s most popular and longest-serving team bosses, Guenther Steiner, has left his role in charge of Haas. It’s a shock move that poses serious questions about the team’s prospects and future. It’s almost unthinkable to imagine Haas without Steiner, as while the team bears the name of its owner Gene Haas, this was really Steiner F1 in all but name. Steiner was the man who made F1’s strangest team set-up possible and became an unexpected star of the Netflix Drive to Survive series. Steiner’s departure, with former director of engineering Ayao Komatsu taking over as team principal, has surprised almost everybody in F1. BUT there has been discontent bubbling away for some time now, and the situation had been coming to a head behind the scenes. Now, Steiner’s gone, and technical director Simone Resta is understood to be out as well. There were frustrations with the way that Haas was run from the very top, and that means eponymous team owner Gene Haas, who has seemingly become apathetic towards his own F1 team and refused to invest in it. Steiner and Haas disagreed on the team’s potential in its current form. While Steiner felt Haas needed steady investment over the next few years, as it had outgrown its unique multi-location, Ferrari-dependent model, Gene Haas believes the team has underachieved and does not need more resources or improved facilities to perform better. Daniel Ricciardo might be back to his best in Formula 1, and starting to show he could get a Red Bull Racing return after all. Ricciardo was performing at a Red Bull level at the Mexican Grand Prix - literally. He qualified alongside Max Verstappen AND outpaced Sergio Perez, which is as much of a statement as it’s possible to make in an AlphaTauri. ESPECIALLY as Ricciardo followed that up with a strong seventh place in the grand prix, running ahead of several faster cars for a lot of it and passing every test of his racecraft, tyre management and pace, while Perez completely imploded and wiped himself out at the first corner. And this is about much more than a single result. It’s what made such a performance possible, the reasons to believe it’s sustainable, how much life it breathes into Ricciardo’s post-McLaren renaissance and the fact he looks like he really COULD be what Red Bull needs from Verstappen’s future team-mate. 00:00 Ricciardo shines 02:00 What changed? 03:51 What's now working 06:33 Why it's significant 08:31 Made for Netflix Subscribe: http://the-race.com/youtube_subscribe Website: http://the-race.com/ Twitter: @wearetherace Instagram: @wearetherace Facebook: http://facebook.com/wearetherace Podcasts: http://the-race.com/podcasts Thanks for watching - please like, share and comment, please also hit subscribe to show your support so we'll keep doing what we're doing. https://www.the-race.com http://www.twitter.com/wearetherace #f1 #danielricciardo #sergioperez #redbull #f1news #mexicogp #mexicangp #ricciardo #formula1 #perez #checo #f12023 #f12024 #formulaone #alphatauri #redbullf1 #redbullracing
Daniel Ricciardo’s Formula 1 comeback with AlphaTauri is one of the big stories of the 2023 season. But whether the story has a happy ending for the Australian and his many fans depends on what is probably the worst car on the grid for him to jump into. That’s not because its uncompetitive – although that doesn’t help – but because of tricky handling characteristics that could expose some of the same weaknesses that made his two years at McLaren – that glorious victory at Monza in 2021 aside - a failure. That McLaren was willing to pay Ricciardo, who had a contract for 2023, millions not to race so it could replace him with Oscar Piastri means his F1 stock is at an all-time low. But the opportunity to return to F1 mid-season in place of the ousted Nyck De Vries means Ricciardo now has the chance to re-establish himself as an F1 star. McLaren’s Formula 1 revival was on shaky ground for the first half of 2023, but its recent upturn in form gives hope to fans of the papaya team that it’s very much back on target. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri starred in qualifying at the British Grand Prix, taking second and third on the grid. They would have finished there, but for an unfortunately-timed safety car that meant Piastri dropped to fourth behind Lewis Hamilton. That’s a dramatic turnaround for a team that was at the back as recently as the Miami Grand Prix in May and looked in danger of falling permanently behind its midfield rivals. The car was so impressive at Silverstone that Lewis Hamilton called it “a rocketship". So was this a one-off, or are there signs of a genuine resurgence for McLaren? What changes has it made to its car and what still needs to be done if its to re-emerge as a front running force in the coming years? 00:00 A change of fortunes 00:49 The road to recovery 03:59 Big upgrades 07:22 Much more to come Subscribe: http://the-race.com/youtube_subscribe Website: http://the-race.com/ Twitter: @wearetherace Instagram: @wearetherace Facebook: http://facebook.com/wearetherace Podcasts: http://the-race.com/podcasts Thanks for watching - please like, share and comment, please also hit subscribe to show your support so we'll keep doing what we're doing. https://www.the-race.com http://www.twitter.com/wearetherace #f1 #britishgp #mclaren #formula1 #f12023 #formulaone #mclarenf1 #landonorris #oscarpiastri #silverstone #f1highlights #f1news #grandprix #therace
The result of the Austrian Grand Prix was thrown into confusion by a bizarre situation involving one of F1’s most divisive topics. The FIA’s policing system was overwhelmed by an astonishing scenario at the Red Bull Ring in which close to 1500 instances of a car breaching track limits had to be reviewed. It resulted in 12 extra penalties for eight drivers long after the race finished, changing several positions in the top 10. So what on earth happened? Was this a new low for the thorny issue of track limits? The debate over how Formula 1 handles race finishes when there’s a major incident in the closing stages boiled over again at the Australian Grand Prix, where an attempted two-lap showdown after a red flag turned to chaos in a matter of seconds - resulting in a neutralised safety car finish after all. The complaints were led by race winner Max Verstappen and fellow podium finisher Fernando Alonso - who only had his third place restored when the order was reset before the procession to the chequered flag. And large numbers of fans were upset with what they believed was F1 prioritising the show by trying to ensure a green flag finish. So what happened, why did the race officials make the decisions they did, and is there really an ideal solution for these situations? 00:00 Another controversial finish 00:43 Late-race chaos 03:01 FIA decisions explained 06:31 F1's conundrum Subscribe: http://the-race.com/youtube_subscribe Website: http://the-race.com/ Twitter: @wearetherace Instagram: @wearetherace Facebook: http://facebook.com/wearetherace Podcasts: http://the-race.com/podcasts Thanks for watching - please like, share and comment, please also hit subscribe to show your support so we'll keep doing what we're doing. https://www.the-race.com http://www.twitter.com/wearetherace #f1 #australiangp #f12023 #formula1 #formulaone #f1news #maxverstappen #fernandoalonso #lewishamilton #carlossainz #nicohulkenberg #alpine #redflag #grandprix #therace
Fernando Alonso had a controversial penalty applied in Jeddah after the race - in fact, right after he’d been on the F1 podium at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. It meant he had his trophy literally taken from his hands moments after the podium ceremony, and it was given to George Russell over in the TV interview area instead. But a few hours later, it was Alonso’s once again, in a confusing situation that was F1’s first real penalty controversy of 2023. Here’s what led to Alonso being penalised so late to begin with, and the bizarre rule contradiction that meant Aston Martin got the outcome overturned. 00:00 Podium confusion 00:44 Alonso's penalty 02:14 A flawed rule 03:58 A needless mess Subscribe: http://the-race.com/youtube_subscribe Website: http://the-race.com/ Twitter: @wearetherace Instagram: @wearetherace Facebook: http://facebook.com/wearetherace Podcasts: http://the-race.com/podcasts Thanks for watching - please like, share and comment, please also hit subscribe to show your support so we'll keep doing what we're doing. https://www.the-race.com http://www.twitter.com/wearetherace #f1 #fernandoalonso #saudiarabiangp #f1news #f12023 #formula1 #formulaone #astonmartin #astonmartinf1 #fia #jeddah #saudiarabia #grandprix #therace
Ferrari’s title bid has started in a very disappointing way, after it was easily beaten by Red Bull and its lead car suffered the all too familiar fate of retiring because of an engine problem. New team boss Fred Vasseur said after the season opener in Bahrain that he needed to stick to what he had said in the build-up: that Ferrari could not win or lose the championship at the first race. But it clearly has a big task ahead to catch and beat Red Bull, and its troubled start to the new season didn’t even include a carryover of some of the positives it could take when things went wrong last year. Add in the immediate return of a big 2022 weakness, which was meant to be resolved, and things look even worse. 00:00 A nightmare start 00:52 The big problem 03:21 Lack of speed 06:40 What's the true picture?
