What broke F1's policing system in Austrian GP results farce

The result of the Austrian Grand Prix was thrown into confusion by a bizarre situation involving one of F1’s most divisive topics. The FIA’s policing system was overwhelmed by an astonishing scenario at the Red Bull Ring in which close to 1500 instances of a car breaching track limits had to be reviewed. It resulted in 12 extra penalties for eight drivers long after the race finished, changing several positions in the top 10. So what on earth happened? Was this a new low for the thorny issue of track limits? And what, if anything, is going to be done about it? 00:00 Post-race confusion 00:35 What happened? 03:02 Unprecedented situation 06:52 Do the rules work? Ricciardo’s fury and what we learned from F1's Chinese GP

Daniel Ricciardo's anger at Lance Stroll following their collision at the Chinese Grand Prix was a major talking point after F1 returned to Shanghai for the fifth round of F1 2024. Ben Anderson and Scott Mitchell-Malm unpick the consequences of that incident, Ricciardo's reaction, the response of Stroll and Aston Martin - and analyse the key lessons from a race where McLaren over-performed, Ferrari underwhelmed and Mercedes looked lost (again). 00:00 Intro 00:25 The true source of Ricciardo's anger 01:35 Sympathy for Stroll? 03:39 A concerning response from Aston Martin 05:16 McLaren surprise everyone (including themselves) 07:39 Why were Ferrari off the pace? 10:12 Mercedes (and Hamilton) get lost again READ MORE HERE: Subscribe: http://the-race.com/youtube_subscribe Website: http://the-race.com/ Twitter: @wearetherace Instagram: @wearetherace Facebook: http://facebook.com/wearetherace Podcasts: http://the-race.com/podcasts Thanks for watching - please like, share and comment, please also hit subscribe to show your support so we'll keep doing what we're doing. https://www.the-race.com http://www.twitter.com/wearetherace #f1 #formulaone #f12024 #therace #formula1 #grandprix #f1news #redbull #mercedes #maxverstappen #lewishamilton #ferrari #danielricciardo #mclaren #astonmartin #chinesegp #china #shanghai

The evidence that damned Alonso in Russell’s Australian GP crash
The evidence that damned Alonso in Russell’s Australian GP crash

You don’t normally see an F1 driver punished for someone crashing behind them without any contact - but Fernando Alonso’s driving in the Australian Grand Prix was penalised for exactly that. Alonso was given a 20-second time penalty for the "unusual manoeuvre" that contributed to George Russell's dramatic last lap accident in Melbourne. What initially looked like Russell shunting on his own in Alonso’s dirty air quickly morphed into something more, as it became clear that Alonso had at least lifted off the throttle on his way into the corner. Unsurprisingly this became very divisive very quickly. Was it a brake test? Or was it just classic, ‘wily’ Alonso doing an age-old trick of making the car behind check up - and Russell just got caught out? 0:00 Intro 1:13 What damned Alonso 3:02 Alonso bites back 4:54 But... he's wrong 6:58 Why this penalty? Williams's brutal F1 sacrifice at Australian GP explained

Williams benching Logan Sargeant so team-mate Alex Albon can race is an unprecedented scenario in modern Formula 1. But has Williams made the right call in allowing Albon to use Sargeant's car for the rest of the weekend, having damaged his own beyond repair in a practice crash? Scott Mitchell-Malm and Edd Straw (from Melbourne) join Glenn Freeman to discuss this brutal Williams decision, the reasons for it, and what it says about the team and how it views its second driver. What's behind Jos Verstappen escalating Red Bull's Horner crisis
What's behind Jos Verstappen escalating Red Bull's Horner crisis

The controversy surrounding Red Bull and its F1 team boss Christian Horner has descended into crisis after extraordinary tension within the team was made public by Max Verstappen’s father Jos. F1’s season opener was dominated by Red Bull with a one-two for world champion Max Verstappen and team-mate Sergio Perez, but the curtain-raiser was overshadowed constantly through a remarkable week in Bahrain. And what was a dream start on-track has been nothing less than a nightmare off it. Red Bull and Horner hoped a line could be drawn under the allegations about his conduct towards a female member of staff when the parent company dismissed a “grievance” against him on the eve of the new season. Instead, it has escalated to new heights, culminating in Jos Verstappen’s shock warning that Red Bull Racing will “explode” if Horner remains in charge. FREE TRIAL! Lewis Hamilton's stunning Ferrari F1 switch explained
Lewis Hamilton's stunning Ferrari F1 switch explained

Lewis Hamilton will make a stunning switch to Ferrari for 2025 in one of F1’s biggest driver moves ever. Hamilton only signed a new two-year Mercedes deal last summer, that was meant to cover 2024 and 2025. Which is one of many reasons this is such a big surprise. But it turns out that new contract included a release clause for 2025 that Hamilton has chosen to activate before even driving the 2024 Mercedes in reality. We didn’t see this coming and Mercedes didn’t either, based on the hurried meeting that was held at Brackley on Thursday afternoon to inform staff. 0:00 Hamilton's shock Ferrari move 2:51 Why Ferrari? 4:55 A gut punch for Mercedes 6:32 Who will replace Hamilton? 9:14 The consequences at Ferrari Subscribe: http://the-race.com/youtube_subscribe Website: http://the-race.com/ Twitter: @wearetherace Instagram: @wearetherace Facebook: http://facebook.com/wearetherace Podcasts: http://the-race.com/podcasts Thanks for watching - please like, share and comment, please also hit subscribe to show your support so we'll keep doing what we're doing. https://www.the-race.com http://www.twitter.com/wearetherace #f1 #formulaone #formula1 #lewishamilton #ferrari #mercedes #f12024

Guenther Steiner’s bombshell Haas F1 exit explained
Guenther Steiner’s bombshell Haas F1 exit explained

One of F1’s most popular and longest-serving team bosses, Guenther Steiner, has left his role in charge of Haas. It’s a shock move that poses serious questions about the team’s prospects and future. It’s almost unthinkable to imagine Haas without Steiner, as while the team bears the name of its owner Gene Haas, this was really Steiner F1 in all but name. Steiner was the man who made F1’s strangest team set-up possible and became an unexpected star of the Netflix Drive to Survive series. Steiner’s departure, with former director of engineering Ayao Komatsu taking over as team principal, has surprised almost everybody in F1. BUT there has been discontent bubbling away for some time now, and the situation had been coming to a head behind the scenes. Now, Steiner’s gone, and technical director Simone Resta is understood to be out as well. There were frustrations with the way that Haas was run from the very top, and that means eponymous team owner Gene Haas, who has seemingly become apathetic towards his own F1 team and refused to invest in it. Steiner and Haas disagreed on the team’s potential in its current form. While Steiner felt Haas needed steady investment over the next few years, as it had outgrown its unique multi-location, Ferrari-dependent model, Gene Haas believes the team has underachieved and does not need more resources or improved facilities to perform better. Why Daniel Ricciardo is suddenly a serious threat to Sergio Perez in F1
Why Daniel Ricciardo is suddenly a serious threat to Sergio Perez in F1

Daniel Ricciardo might be back to his best in Formula 1, and starting to show he could get a Red Bull Racing return after all. Ricciardo was performing at a Red Bull level at the Mexican Grand Prix - literally. He qualified alongside Max Verstappen AND outpaced Sergio Perez, which is as much of a statement as it’s possible to make in an AlphaTauri. ESPECIALLY as Ricciardo followed that up with a strong seventh place in the grand prix, running ahead of several faster cars for a lot of it and passing every test of his racecraft, tyre management and pace, while Perez completely imploded and wiped himself out at the first corner. And this is about much more than a single result. It’s what made such a performance possible, the reasons to believe it’s sustainable, how much life it breathes into Ricciardo’s post-McLaren renaissance and the fact he looks like he really COULD be what Red Bull needs from Verstappen’s future team-mate. 00:00 Ricciardo shines 02:00 What changed? 03:51 What's now working 06:33 Why it's significant 08:31 Made for Netflix Subscribe: http://the-race.com/youtube_subscribe Website: http://the-race.com/ Twitter: @wearetherace Instagram: @wearetherace Facebook: http://facebook.com/wearetherace Podcasts: http://the-race.com/podcasts Thanks for watching - please like, share and comment, please also hit subscribe to show your support so we'll keep doing what we're doing. https://www.the-race.com http://www.twitter.com/wearetherace #f1 #danielricciardo #sergioperez #redbull #f1news #mexicogp #mexicangp #ricciardo #formula1 #perez #checo #f12023 #f12024 #formulaone #alphatauri #redbullf1 #redbullracing

How Red Bull avoided USGP error that got Hamilton and Leclerc excluded
How Red Bull avoided USGP error that got Hamilton and Leclerc excluded

Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton’s best weekend of 2023 ended in the worst possible outcome. Their strongest challenge against Red Bull and Max Verstappen yet ended in a disqualification for a rare breach of a near-30-year-old rule - with Ferrari falling foul of this as well. Red Bull was checked, hadn’t made the same mistake - and therefore Verstappen’s victory stood. Conversely Hamilton was stripped of his second place at the United States GP just a few hours after chasing Verstappen closely in his upgraded Mercedes in easily his and the team’s most competitive showing of the season, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc got excluded from sixth place at the same time. Their cars breached the same technical regulation that refers to the thickness of the plank assembly under the car, with a minimum thickness of 9mm accepted after a competitive session due to wear. It put a dampener on a much improved weekend for Mercedes even if there were a few factors behind dominant world champion Verstappen almost suffering a rare defeat. 00:00 Exclusions 01:57 How Ferrari and Mercedes got caught out 03:26 Why only four cars were checked 05:28 How Red Bull avoided trouble 07:55 What about Mercedes' upgrade?
