Pour qu’une ascension soient reconnue et approuvée par ses pairs, il faut parvenir au sommet sans tricher, dans le respect d'une éthique stricte. Pourquoi les grands alpinistes se détournent-ils de l'Everest ? Pourquoi refusent-ils l'oxygène artificiel sur certains sommets himalayens ? Depuis quand les « grands guides » sont-ils aussi de « grands alpinistes » ? D’où vient l’éthique de l’alpinisme ? À quoi sert-elle ? Pour répondre à ces questions l’enquête présentée dans le livre, L’esprit de l’alpinisme, Une sociologie de l’excellence du XIXe au XIXe siècle, est remontée jusqu’aux origines de l’alpinisme, dans l’Angleterre du XIXe siècle. À partir des autobiographies des grands alpinistes britanniques et français publiées entre la fin du XIXe siècle et aujourd’hui, d’interviews d’alpinistes des deux pays, d’articles de journaux et revues d’alpinisme, et d’autres matériaux, Delphine Moraldo a cherché à comprendre d’où venait l’esprit de l’alpinisme et son éthique. Ainsi l’alpinisme n’échappe pas à certaines hiérarchies sociales et genrées qui l’ont construit et se maintiennent encore. L’élite anglaise, bourgeoise et masculine, de l’Alpine Club a influencé bien plus qu’on ne pourrait le croire la manière dont on pense et dont on pratique, encore aujourd’hui, le « grand alpinisme ». It circles the Mont Blanc massif, covering a distance of roughly 170 kilometres (110 mi) with 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) of ascent/descent and passes through parts of Switzerland, Italy and France. Traditionally the TMB is walked Anti-clockwise Starting and finishing in Les Houches ( France).
