ATLANTA, GEORGIA—The playoff run of the Atlanta United FC is over after they suffered a 0-2 defeat at the hands of the home team New York City FC at the Yankee Stadium on Nov. 21 at 3:00 p.m. EST. The visiting United FC played aggressively in the entire game but their efforts were not enough to stop the fourth-seeded New York to advance to the second round of the MLS Eastern Conference playoffs. New York City star striker MLS 2021 Golden Boot winner Valentín Castellanos scored the first goal for his team in the second half. The goal was Castellanos’ seventh in five games. A corner kick also initiated New York City’s second goal. In the 53rd minute, midfielder Maxi Moralez took a shot that hit the crossbar. Defender Alex Callens headed in the rebound to put NYCFC up 2-0. With the win, New York is set to face No. 1 seed and Supporters’ Shield champion New England Revolution in the conference semifinals on November 30. Despite the loss, United FC coach Gonzalo Pineda is still happy with the heart and grit of his team. “Today again was proof for me the heart of the team,” Pineda said. “They never give up. I love when teams don’t give up, even in a game like this. 2-0, playing away. The team showed a lot of character to come back, to try create chances. Even with a man down we were trying to push for the game. Those things for me are valuable, and I’m very proud of the heart of the team in general,” Pineda added. ATLANTA, GEORGIA—The dream of Atlanta United FC to enter the Major League Soccer Eastern Conference playoffs for the fourth time since entering the league in 2017, is now a reality. On November 7, United FC scored a late goal from veteran Venezuelan striker Josef Martinez to beat the home team FC Cincinnati 2-1. The win is United FC’s second all-time come-from-behind road win in club history. With the win, United FC ends the regular season with a playoff spot after finishing in fifth place in the Eastern Conference. In a post-match interview, Martinez is very happy with his game-winning goal in the 79th minute that allowed his team to advance to the playoffs. “I don’t know where that goal came from,” Martínez said. “But I just remembered after that first save he’d made on me, it was a really good chance but he made that save. So, we just had to keep trying to get that goal. And I even said it to coach on the sidelines that it was so important for us to get that goal.” Martinez added. United FC coach Gonzalo Pineda praised Martinez for the late-minute goal. “I’m just very, very happy for him because, again, it was a very hard season for him personally, individually with the injuries,” Pineda said. “Finishing the season with our last great goal, it’s very encouraging for him,” Pineda added. The other goal from United FC was provided by the defender of the Year candidate Miles Robinson in the 70th minute. Robinson’s first career MLS goal came on a header at the center of the box on a cross from midfielder Ezequiel Barco following a corner kick. ATLANTA, GEORGIA—The home team Atlanta United FC has moved to fifth place in the Major League Soccer Eastern Conference playoff race after they ended their regular season homestand with a 1-1 draw against the visiting Toronto FC at the Mercedes Benz Stadium on October 31. The draw gave United FC 47 on the season and into fifth place in the MLS Eastern Conference playoff race. The home team drew first blood and take a 1-0 lead with a goal from Brazilian striker Luiz Araujo in the 15th minute. The goal was Araujo’s fourth of the season in just 13 matches played. He led the team with five chances created on the night. Toronto equalized in the 88th minute. Forward Jordan Perruzza directed a one-touch shot in the center of the box off a header that striker Dom Dwyer sent across the box. The play initially started as a set-piece. With the score tied, United FC tried to come up with another goal to win but their efforts were futile due to the tough defensive stance of Toronto. United FC coach Gonzalo Pineda is sad with the missed chances of his team to score more goals in the game. “Overall the game plan worked, it’s just about not scoring the second goal,” Pineda said. Atlanta United has just two matches remaining, against a surging New York Red Bulls and FC Cincinnati. Both are on the road, and it’ll be vital for Atlanta to come away with positive results.
