Renan Dal Zotto’s Brazil were trying to extend their unbeaten run to seven matches, but despite appearing in control for large parts of the match Nikola Grbic’s Serbia kept the Olympic champions within striking distance and maintained the belief throughout. They only needed one match point to win. Brazil were unable to control Petar Krsmanovic’s serve and when the ball sat up in front of the net Cirovic needed no second invitation to spike the ball dead for the win. The winner was Cirovic’s 12th point of the match as he led scoring for Serbia. Krsmanovic also finished with double figures, one behind on 11. Brazil’s Ricardo Lucarelli Souza led scoring with 20 and Yoandy Leal Hidalgo finished with 15 points. Serbia now take on Portugal on Saturday, while Brazil will face China. Brazil coach Jose Roberto Guimaraes: "I’m very happy for today’s victory. However, our team made a few unnecessary mistakes during the first and second sets, especially in the transition phase. We had a problem blocking Serbia's attacks. It's one of the things we need to improve for the next games. Thanks for the hospitality and all the organization, and a special thanks to the Japanese volleyball fans who supported us so warmly." Brazil captain Natalia Pereira: "Today was a very important victory for our team. Serbia are a very young team, but they played very high level volleyball. I was so happy to get the victory from them." Serbia coach Branko Kovacevic: "Today was not such a good game for both Serbia and Brazil. Brazil fought against us with not only experience, but also quality especially in their block, defence and combinations. Young players like Maya got some more experience from this game." Anna Danesi, Italy: "We entered the field on the right foot, and we were good both at the block and in attacks but they gave us a hard time. Now we have to think about tomorrow because on paper it is the most difficult game in the pool. We must think only of ourselves and not of Russia, if we play as we know how, we will do well." Lucia Bosetti, Italy: "We know there is still a lot to do, many of us had a short period of rest, practically we never stopped and honestly it is not always easy to find the rhythm in such a long event. Glenn Hoag, Head Coach, Canada: "I’m really happy with the win. The team played solid volleyball. The German team is a really strong team, especially in the serving aspect. They have great players, so for us to beat them it wasn’t an easy match. I didn’t expect any easy match. We can now turn our attention to tomorrow. The Serbian team is crafty so we have to be ready for that." John Gordon Perrin, Captain, Canada: "We figured the match would be close. Germany is a strong team; they have big middle blockers so it’s difficult to spike against them. We stuck with it, we had a bad couple first sets but it was a really good team win so we’re happy." Andrea Giani, Coach, Germany: "Both teams had some highs and lows. In the second set we had a good chance to close the set but we didn’t finish it. We had the possibility to win but we need to close it out. Tomorrow is another game, it’s important to keep the quality we have on the court." Christian Fromm, Captain, Germany: "I’m happy that we fought at the end and came back in the fourth set, but the problem was the second set. We had to close that and it could have been a different match. Canada played well, defended well, but I think we have the team to beat them.
