1976-77 NHL: Defensemen Scoring Leaders (Top 15)

A look at the top scoring defensemen during the 1976-77 National Hockey League season. Larry Robinson of the Montreal Canadiens led the pack with 85 points over 77 regular season games on 19 goals and 66 assists. Robinson was awarded the James Norris Trophy as the NHL's top blue liner. He was also named to the First All-Star Team. Joining him on the 1st team was Borje Salming of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Second Team defenders were Denis Potvin of the New York Islanders and Guy Lapointe of the Habs. Eight of the 26 goalies pictured are now enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame, including: Bernie Parent, Jacques Plante, Ken Dryden, Rogatien Vachon, Tony Esposito, Ed Giacomin, Gerry Cheevers and Gump Worsley. All 14 teams that competed in the 1971-72 NHL campaign are represented. Most had two goalies in the set. However, the Montreal Canadiens, California Golden Seals and Chicago Blackhawks had only one goalkeeper in the set. A look at the individual team scoring leaders during the 1970-71 National Hockey League season. The year marked the inaugural campaigns for the Buffalo Sabres and the Vancouver Canucks. Phil Esposito of the Boston Bruins set records with 76 goals and 152 points. Those marks would stand until the Gretzky era. Brothers Bryan Hextall (Pittsburgh Penguins) and Dennis Hextall (California Golden Seals), both remembered more for their toughness and not their offensive talents, led their teams in scoring. 9: The most often retired jersey number in the National Hockey League. In March, 2022, the Minnesota Wild will retired the number 9 of Mikko Koivu. This will mark the 14th time the number has been taken out of circulation by a NHL club. The first was Maurice Richard by the Montreal Canadiens in 1960. The usual suspects followed in Johnny Bucyk, Gordie Howe and Bobby Hull. The Toronto Maple Leafs honoured both Charlie Conacher and Ted Kennedy when they retired the number in 2016. O-Pee-Chee included in their 1978-79 NHL set, special hockey cards featuring the 12 All-Stars from 1977-78 (6 First Team and 6 Second Team). In the Topps version of the set, their were no separate cards. Instead, each of the 12 players had an all-star banner below their names.
