Calgary Flames Worst Trade: Doug Gilmour Traded To Toronto Maple Leafs
Calgary Flames Worst Trade: Doug Gilmour Traded To Toronto Maple Leafs

Decided it was time to do another trade retrospect video where at or on the date. I talk about a significant trade in Calgary Flames history. With January 2nd upon us. I felt it was time to talk about what I think was the worst trade that the Calgary Flames made to date. On January 2nd, 1992 which was the time when Doug Gilmour was traded from the Calgary Flames to the Toronto Maple Leafs. I give a back story of Doug Gilmour when he started his NHL career and what he meant to the Calgary Flames including being a big part of the 1989 Stanley Cup team before why this trade happened. This trade did happen at the time when player salaries we're starting to rise and smaller market teams like the Calgary Flames couldn't afford to keep their best players like Doug Gilmour. Doug Gilmour was one of the undisputed leaders from the 1989 Stanley Cup team and did score the cup winning goal in Game 6 against the Montreal Canadiens. Fast forward to two and a half years later where Doug Gilmour was in a contract dispute with the Calgary Flames actually left the team after the New Years Eve game on January 1st, 1992. Fittingly Doug Gimour scored another big goal against the Montreal Canadiens which was the overtime winner before he left the Calgary Flames as he knew he could get more money elsewhere. The whole trade is listed below which at the time was one of the biggest ever in NHL history with 10 players involved and now looking about one of the most lopsided trades as well. Worst Calgary Flames Trade - Doug Gilmour To Toronto Maple Leafs To Toronto Maple Leafs: F Doug Gilmour F Kent Mandeville D Jamie Mackin D Ric Nattress G Rick Walmsley To Calgary Flames: F Gary Leeman F Craig Berube D Alexander Godynyuk D Michel Petit G Jeff Reese The Toronto Maple Leafs instantly got a new hero in Doug Gilmour where he elevated his game as one of the best two way centres of all time. What he showed in St. Louis and Calgary and eventually Toronto made Doug Gilmour a hall of famer and got inducted in 2011. Plus his number 93 got retired with the Toronto Maple Leafs. In his first full season with the Toronto Maple Leafs he led the team in scoring including setting franchise records in assists and points in a season that led him to winning the Selke Trophy as best defensive forward and runner up to the Hart Trophy as the leagues most valuable player. Doug Gilmour was also instrumental in leading the Toronto Maple Leafs to back-to-back conference finals in 1993 and 1994 at his peak with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Defenseman Jamie Macoun was also a great player of the defense for the Toronto Maple Leafs that made this trade even more a win for Toronto. The other pieces played a much smaller role but Doug Gilmour being the best player in the trade made it a steal. Calgary Flames really got shafted in this deal when it's all said and done. Gary Leeman who was suppose to be the key piece coming to the Calgary Flames didn't find his scoring ability as the season before he scored over 50 goals. Also had back-to-back 30+ goal seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Gary Leeman and all the other pieces in the trade didn't last more than 2 or 3 seasons with the Calgary Flames for various reasons as mentioned in the video. While this trade reduced the salaries spent for the Calgary Flames. They didn't get full value in return for what Doug Gilmour provided to the Calgary Flames and what he provided in his NHL career. Toronto Maple Leafs we're familiar with all the assets as Cliff Fletcher who was the general manager worked for the Calgary Flames including building the 1989 Stanley Cup team. Tom Watt the head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs before Pat Burns worked with Doug Risebrough and Terry Crisp on the coaching staff during the 1989 Stanley Cup team. Doug Risebrough took over as Calgary Flames general manager and head coach after Cliff Fletcher left for Toronto and Terry Crisp was fired made this trade which I say was the worst trade the Calgary Flames ever made. This started the dismantling from the 1989 Stanley Cup team and the franchise was set back for many years until 2003-04. There was lots to say about this trade but it was big for both teams that needed a shake up and 10 players we're involved in the transaction. What are your thoughts on this trade over 28 years later of this video? Was there a worse trade the Calgary Flames made? You're very welcome Toronto Maple Leafs and Don Cherry had Doug Gilmour as his man crush during that era. Calgary Flames Almost Traded For Taylor Hall? Free Agent Frenzy 2020 Target?
Calgary Flames Almost Traded For Taylor Hall? Free Agent Frenzy 2020 Target?

With the New Jersey Devils underachieving in the 2019-20 NHL Regular Season and Taylor Hall becoming a pending unrestricted free agent. Also there's rumours and reports that Taylor Hall wasn't willing to sign a longer term deal or even stay with the New Jersey Devils. The team was looking for a trade partner to get some assets for the scoring forward. While there was many teams interested in acquiring Taylor Hall. Some teams we're offering a futures trade and hockey trade. Futures trade for picks and prospects while a hockey trade is players who can help a team now. Ultimately the New Jersey Devils traded Taylor Hall to the Arizona Coyotes which clearly on the return is a futures trade looks to be a rental as there's no clear word that Taylor Hall wants to stay with the Arizona Coyotes after this season and become a free agent. There was reports and rumours from several sources that the Calgary Flames we're interested and in on a possible Taylor Hall trade which could of had a better return in a hockey type of trade for the New Jersey Devils. While ultimately I'm happy the trade didn't happen for the Calgary Flames. I'm still excited for the possibility that Taylor Hall can be a free agent in July 2020 and feel the Calgary Flames may have the inside chance of signing him. One factor is the need for another scoring forward and the fact he's from Calgary and may want to play for his hometown team. Also would spice up the Battle of Alberta even more as he's a former first overall pick of the Edmonton Oilers back in 2010. I ask do you think the Calgary Flames should look at Taylor Hall in free agency given reports of a trade that almost happened? What is the price before you can say it's too rich? How will the Calgary Flames fit him in the cap next season with players already committed and looking ahead? Many questions and possibilities to ponder if Taylor Hall becomes a free agent and would want him to be a Calgary Flame is the price is right and makes sense without sacrificing the existing core. Calgary Flames seemed to be close on a few trades that almost happened. Almost getting Jason Zucker from the Minnesota Wild or Nazem Kadri from the Toronto Maple Leafs. Now add Taylor Hall from the New Jersey Devils for the what if's given reports. Trade that actually happened: To Arizona Coyotes - LW/C Taylor Hall and C Blake Speers To New Jersey Devils - C Nick Merkely, C Nathan Schnarr, D Kevin Bahl, 2020 Conditional 1st Round Pick and 2021 Conditional 3rd Round Pick Conditions: New Jersey Devils retains 50% salary for Taylor Hall. Arizona's 2020 Conditional 1st Round Pick would go to 2021 if it's a top three selection (lottery protected). Arizona's 2021 Conditional 3rd Round Pick could be a 2nd if Arizona wins a playoff round or if Taylor Hall re-signs with Arizona. Arizona's 2021 Conditional 3rd Round Pick could be a 1st if Arizona wins a playoff round and Taylor Hall re-signs. Trade that almost happened: To Calgary Flames - LW/C Taylor Hall To New Jersey Devils - RW Sam Bennett, D Travis Harmonic and 2020 Conditional 1st Round Pick. Conditions: New Jersey Devils retains 50% salary for Taylor Hall. Calgary's 2020 Conditional Pick to depend on Taylor Hall re-signs with Calgary. All speculative based on reports. http://www.capfriendly.com You can also follow me on these social platforms at: Twitter: https://twitter.com/BDHornby/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brett_hornby/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BDHornbyYouTube/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/BrettHornby?sub_confirmation=1 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/BrettHornby

107th Grey Cup Preview - Winnipeg Blue Bombers vs Hamilton Tiger-Cats
107th Grey Cup Preview - Winnipeg Blue Bombers vs Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Here we are at the end of the road to the 107th Grey Cup in Calgary and if the Calgary Stampeders weren't going to be in it. This is my consolation match-up. Looking forward at seeing this match-up when I give my preview as these are the two franchises that have the longest Grey Cup droughts in the CFL. Somebody is going to have to win it, right? The Eastern Final pretty much went as expected with the heavily favourited Hamilton Tiger-Cats taking care of the Edmonton Eskimos ending their attempt at being the first crossover team to make it to the Grey Cup. Western Final was a different story as that game was a closer match-up with heated rivals in the Winnipeg Blue Bombers going on the road to take on the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Winnipeg was able to stop Saskatchewan in the red zone and score at critical times to edge out Saskatchewan and continue their magical run to the Grey Cup. This sets up an epic match-up on Sunday, November 24th, 2019 for the 107th Grey Cup in Calgary at McMahon Stadium to see which team and fan base gets to end their lengthy drought. Hamilton is looking for their first championship since 1999 while Winnipeg is looking for their first championship since 1990. Both teams have been to a Grey Cup since their last championship but have suffered some tough defeats in the process. In addition to breaking down the match-up and see who has the edge in the game. I go over the history of playoff games between the two teams and give my feelings at the end on what a win will mean for each city and fan base. Looking forward at seeing this unfold as this is the ninth time that the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Hamilton Tiger-Cats will play for the Grey Cup but it's the first time they've met in the championship game since 1984. My playoff history will also go over divisional match-ups as both teams we're in the same division but this is the first time that these teams will meet in the playoffs since 2011. This match-up has history but been rare in most recent years. Intro: Legend application found on iOS and Google Play. 2019 CFL Playoffs Western Final Preview - Winnipeg Blue Bombers @ Saskatchewan Roughriders
2019 CFL Playoffs Western Final Preview - Winnipeg Blue Bombers @ Saskatchewan Roughriders

After quashing the dream of playing in the Grey Cup at home for the Calgary Stampeders. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers took the Western Semi-Final with a convincing 35-14 win on the road against the Calgary Stampeders who we're the defending Grey Cup champions looking to repeat and win it at home. However the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for the second straight season will be off to Regina to take on the Saskatchewan Roughriders but this time in the Western Final for a birth in the 107th Grey Cup in Calgary. Like with my previous videos I break down the match-ups and see who has the edge in each facet of the game and ultimately make my pick on who I think will win the game and represent the west at the 107th Grey Cup in Calgary. I feel with how each team stacks up plus the natural prairie rivalry these teams have. I'm anticipating a close one if everything plays out to it's full potential. Who do I think will represent the west? Watch and find out. Intro: Legend application found on iOS and Google Play. 2019 CFL Playoffs Eastern Final Preview - Edmonton Eskimos @ Hamilton Tiger-Cats
2019 CFL Playoffs Eastern Final Preview - Edmonton Eskimos @ Hamilton Tiger-Cats

After pulling off the minor upset against the Montreal Alouettes with a 37-29 win in the Eastern Semi-Final. The Edmonton Eskimos are off to Hamilton to take on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Eastern Final. I once again preview the game and match-up ahead to see if the Edmonton Eskimos have a chance to defeat the heavily favoured Hamilton Tiger-Cats to be the first CFL crossover team to reach the Grey Cup. The records could show this being a mismatch but during the regular season the first game was a close one which could give some home for Edmonton. Hamilton hasn't faced Trevor Harris during the regular season and Hamilton has been riding the arm of Dane Evans after the injury of Jeremiah Masoli which makes things interesting. It's a battle of offense vs defense in my mind here. See who I ultimately think will represent the east at the 107th Grey Cup in Calgary. Intro: Legend application found on iOS and Google Play. Calgary Stampeders 2019 Western Semi-Final Opening Video & Defensive Player Introductions
Calgary Stampeders 2019 Western Semi-Final Opening Video & Defensive Player Introductions

Capturing the pre-game video and defensive players Introductions ahead of the Western Semi-Final game. Calgary Stampeders took on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and unfortunately the dream season is done after this game. Video had extra special motivation on the goal at hand the Imagine Dragons Whatever It Takes. Calgary Stampeders first was led by Kamar Jorden who was playing in his first game from injury since the 2018 Labour Day Classic. Also after the player introductions. I've captured the Remembrance Day moments with The Last Post and national anthem. Heard there was going to be jets like on Labour Day but wasn't which is why I've captured more of it. Lest We Forget for Remembrance Day and always be thankful for those who have served or serving for Canada. Also remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice so I could enjoy football games. Red City Drumline: Calgary Stampeders vs Winnipeg Blue Bombers Western Semi-Final Game 2019

Capturing the Red City Drumline performance before player introductions at the Western Semi-Final game. This song is what they performed to the most during the season unlike the last two regular season home games I've captured. It was much cooler weather wise being in the stands for this game. Capturing the Calgary Stampeders warm-up rally ahead of their playoff game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at the Western Semi-Final. Sadly this is the last Calgary Stampeders game for the 2019 CFL Season and they won't be playing in the 107th Grey Cup at home. Team was rallying behind the return of Kamar Jorden who played in his first game off of injury since the 2018 Labour Day Classic.
