https://goutrgv.com/news/2021/1/16/mens-basketball-completes-sweep-of-dixie-state.aspx Jan. 16, 2021 – RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team completed the weekend sweep of the Dixie State University Trailblazers with a 72-65 victory on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. The Vaqueros (8-3, 2-0 WAC) are now off to an 8-3 start for the first time since 2001-02, when the team started 13-3. Senior Javon Levi led the Vaqueros with 16 points and a season-high 11 assists for his first double-double of the season. Junior Sean Rhea scored 12 points with eight rebounds. Senior Chris Freeman scored 11 points with four rebounds. Junior LaQuan Butler scored 10 points with two steals. Junior Uche Dibiamaka also scored 10 points. Cameron Gooden led the Trailblazers (4-5, 0-2 WAC) with 18 points, four assists and two steals. Hunter Schofield finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Jarod Greene scored 10 points. The Trailblazers led 7-4 before Rhea hit three-straight baskets to give the Vaqueros a 10-7 lead. Then with the Vaqueros up 18-14, the Trailblazers scored eight-straight points to take a 22-18 lead. Later, with the Trailblazers still up four, Dibiamaka came up with a one-hand jam as the Vaqueros scored six-straight points to go up 28-26. The Trailblazers led 35-32 late in the half, but a Levi free throw and layup follow by a buzzer-beating layup by senior Rob McClain Jr. put the Vaqueros up 37-35. The game was tied at 40 early in the second half when the Trailblazers went on a 13-7 run to take a 55-49 lead. Butler responded by hitting back-to-back baskets to spark a 15-3 run and give the Vaqueros the lead for good. UTRGV is back in action on Friday at 8 p.m. against New Mexico State at Antelope Gymnasium on the campus of Grand Canyon. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Arizona Plus and Comcast New Mexico. The Vaqueros (3-1) have now won eight-straight home games dating back to last season. Senior Chris Freeman led the Vaqueros with a career-high 21 points, a career-high nine rebounds and a career-high six assists. Junior Sean Rhea scored 17 points with seven rebounds and a career-high four blocks. In his first game for the Vaqueros, junior Marek Nelson finished with a career-high 12 points, six rebounds and a career-high tying two steals. Junior Uche Dibiamaka finished with 10 points, four rebounds and a career-high six assists. Junior Malik Lawrence-Anderson grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds to go with a career-high nine points. Sophomore Quinton Johnson II scored nine points with eight rebounds, two assists and a career-high tying two blocks. Ruben Monzon led the Saints with 18 points. Darin Minniefield finished with 13 points, five assists and four steals. The Saints hit seven of their first nine shots, including a trio of threes, to jump out to a 17-7 lead. The Saints still had a big lead at 21-13 when the Vaqueros went on a 20-4 run, capped by a one-handed thunder dunk by Dibiamaka, to put the Vaqueros up 33-25. The Saints scored the next four points to pull within four before the Vaqueros went on an 8-2 run that included two Rhea layups to take a 41-31 lead. The Saints climbed to within six early in the second half, but sophomore Connor Raines hit a three and junior Marek Nelson sunk a layup to extend the Vaqueros’ lead to 54-43. Then, with the score 54-47, the Vaqueros hit five-straight shots as part of a 12-4 run that was capped by a Freeman three to push the game out of reach. UTRGV is back in action on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Texas A&M in a game that will be televised on SEC Network.

The Vaqueros (2-1) now lead the Islanders (1-3) 6-0 in the showdown standings. Senior Javon Levi led the Vaqueros with 19 points, six rebounds, seven assists and six steals. Junior Sean Rhea scored 18 points with five rebounds and two blocks. Sophomore Quinton Johnson II finished with nine points and five rebounds. Perry Francois led the Islanders 15 points, four rebounds and two blocks. Jordan Hairston finished with 14 points and four assists. The Vaqueros jumped out to a 10-5 lead on five baskets from four players. Then, after the Islanders pulled to within 13-10, junior Malik Lawrence-Anderson converted a three-point play to spark an 11-0 run to put the Vaqueros up 24-10 with 6:13 remaining in the first half. The Islanders didn’t allow the Vaqueros to score again until early in the second half, scoring seven points over a seven-minute span. The Islanders made it an 11-1 run to pull within 25-21. A layup and a three-point play by Rhea pushed the Vaqueros’ lead to 30-21 before a Javae Lampkins three and a Francois three-point play brought the Islanders right back to within three. The Vaqueros answered with a 9-0 run powered by a three and a jumper by Levi to go up 39-27 at the 11:58 mark. The Islanders climbed to within 41-35 on a Rasheed Browne three, but the Vaqueros went on a 9-4 run to take a 50-39 lead on a Levi three. The Islanders responded by scoring the next 10 points as part of a 13-2 run to tie the game at 52 with 3:58 remaining, but Rhea hit a pair of free throws one minute later to give the Vaqueros the lead for good. UTRGV is back in action on Friday at 6 p.m. against Our Lady of the Lake at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Fans will not be admitted to this game. Fans can watch for free online at WACDigitalNetwork.com. The Vaqueros (2-1) now lead the Islanders (0-4) 3-0 in the showdown standings. The Vaqueros trailed 38-27 with 2:49 remaining in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Tiffany McGarity answered by hitting three three-pointers, a jumper, a layup and a free throw to power a 24-7 run to give the Vaqueros a 51-45 lead with 4:24 remaining in the fourth. McGarity led the Vaqueros with a career-high 25 points while going a career-best 9-for-13, including a career-best 6-for-7 from behind the arc, with four rebounds. The six three-pointers are tied for the seventh-highest single-game total in program history. Junior Jordan Lewis scored 13 points with five rebounds and four steals. Alecia Westbrook led the Islanders with 16 points and nine rebounds. Giana Wright scored 12 points with four rebounds. Paige Allen finished with 11 points, four rebounds and three steals. The Islanders led 9-3 midway through the first quarter when a Lewis three and a pair of McGarity threes helped the Vaqueros to go on an 11-2 run to take a 14-11 lead. The Vaqueros still led at 18-17 on a jumper by freshman Arianna Sturdivant midway through the second quarter, but the Islanders scored six of the next nine points to take a 23-21 halftime lead. The Islanders scored the first six points of the third quarter before a McGarity three put the Vaqueros back on the board. The Vaqueros are back in action on Saturday at 12 p.m. at Texas Southern. The next event of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, is at 7 p.m. when the men’s basketball team hosts Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as part of the Bert Ogden Arena Series, presented by the City of Edinburg.

Graham went a career-high 10-of-18 from the floor while grabbing six rebounds and dishing out a pair of assists. The Vaqueros (1-1) got eight points from sophomore Jena’ Williams, who also added five rebounds and five assists. Sophomore Halie Jones also scored eight points while grabbing six rebounds. Adryana Quezada paced UTSA (1-1) with a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds while Yuliyana Valcheva added 12 points with nine rebounds. The Roadrunners jumped out to the quick 12-2 lead after a jumper from Valcheva with 5:01 left in the first quarter. Jones then kicked of a 9-3 run for the Vaqueros as she knocked down a jumper that made it 12-4. UTRGV then got a layup from sophomore Sydney Cajero, an old-fashioned three-point play from Amara Graham and another layup from Cajero to get within 15-11 at the end of the first. Graham opened the second quarter with four-straight points as she knocked down a jumper and converted a pair of free throws to tie the game at 15-15. Freshman Arianna Sturdivant then knocked down a pair of three-pointers to give UTRGV the 21-19 lead with 4:15 left in the half. UTRGV got back-to-back buckets from Graham and senior Iva Belosevic to push its lead to 25-21 with 2:46 left in the half. Then, Graham added a three-pointer followed by a layup by sophomore Tiffany McGarity that gave the Vaqueros the 30-25 lead at the end of the half. Graham and McGarity teamed up once again with back-to-back buckets to open the third quarter giving UTRGV the 34-35 lead. UTSA answered with a 7-0 run to get within 34-32 but a jumper by Graham made it 38-34 UTRGV with 2:11 left in the third. In the fourth, UTSA got within 44-40 after a pair of free throws by Valcheva but UTRGV put together a 13-4 run to take its biggest lead of the night at 57-44 to put the game out of reach. UTRGV will be back in action on Wednesday, December 2, when it hosts Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 4 p.m. at Bert Ogden Arena in the Bert Ogden Arena series, presented by the City of Edinburg, as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union. Redshirt junior Sean Rhea led all scorers with 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including going 7-of-9 from the free throw line, as he also finished with six rebounds and two blocks. The Vaqueros (1-1) had three others in double-figures with junior Uche Dibiamaka scoring a career-high 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting as he added seven rebounds and four assists. Redshirt sophomore Quinton Johnson II scored 13 points with seven rebounds and five assists while senior Javon Levi added 12 points with four rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Jordan Ivy-Curry led UTSA (1-1) with 12 points while grabbing three rebounds. Jhivvan Jackson chipped in with 10 points and four rebounds. Junior LaQuan Butler converted on a layup in the first half to give the Vaqueros the 10-6 lead before UTSA got a jumper from Jackson and a three-pointer from Luka Barisic to grab the 11-10 lead. After a jumper from Levi, UTSA took the 13-12 lead with 11:50 in the first half. That was the final lead UTSA would have as UTRGV put together an 8-0 run that was capped by a pair of free throws from Rhea to take the 20-13 lead. Later in the half, Levi knocked down a jumper and added a layup before senior Chris Freeman knocked down a three-pointer giving UTRGV its biggest lead of the first half at 31-18. UTSA then answered with an 11-3 run to close out the half as UTRGV led 34-29. UTRGV used seven three-pointers in the second half to fend off multiple UTSA runs. After UTSA tied the game with a three-pointer from Erik Czumbel and a layup from Jacob Germany, Johnson knocked down a three-pointer to give UTRGV the lead right back at 37-34. A layup by Barisic got UTSA within 45-40 but Dibiamaka quickly answered with a three-pointer followed by a jumper from Johnson as UTRGV took the 50-40 lead. Later in the half, UTSA got a layup from Keaton Wallace to get within 58-53. That would be the closest UTSA would get as the Vaqueros put the game away with a 13-0 run that featured back-to-back three-pointers from Johnson and Rhea. UTRGV will be back in action on Wednesday, December 2, when it hosts Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 7 p.m. at Bert Ogden Arena in the Bert Ogden Arena series, presented by the City of Edinburg, as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union. GoUTRGV.com LUBBOCK – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s basketball team fell 89-56 to Texas Tech University in the season opener on Wednesday at United Supermarkets Arena. Sophomore Halie Jones led the Vaqueros (0-1) with 12 points and a pair of rebounds. Redshirt senior Amara Graham chipped in 10 points with two rebounds and two assists while senior Iva Belosevic added eight points and a team-high six rebounds. Texas Tech (1-0) had five players in double-figure scoring with Vivian Gray leading the way with 24 points and eight rebounds. Lexi Gordon and Alexis Tucker each added 18 points while Chrislyn Carr chipped in 15 points and Khyla Wade-Warren scored 10 points. Texas Tech jumped out to the quick lead before Jones got the Vaqueros on the board with a jump shot that made it 7-2. Texas Tech then scored six straight points to push its lead to 13-2 before back-to-back buckets by Belosevic and sophomore Sydney Cajero that got the Vaqueros within 13-6. Later in the first, UTRGV scored five straight points after a jumper by Jones and junior Jessica Martino and a free throw by Graham to get within 18-11 but Texas Tech closed out the first with an 8-4 run to take the 26-15 lead. In the second quarter, Texas Tech scored the first nine points before a layup by Belosevic made it 34-17. Edinburg High alum freshman Brianna Sanchez recorded her first-career basket with 2:46 left in the half but Texas Tech answered with the final seven points to take the 47-22 lead into halftime. Jones knocked down a three-pointer to open the scoring for the Vaqueros in the second half that made it 51-25 Texas Tech. Sophomore Jena’ Williams, making her UTRGV debut, knocked down a three-pointer with 3:49 left in the third to get within 63-35. Redshirt freshman Payton Hicks and junior Jordan Lewis each scored five points in the fourth quarter as the Vaqueros outscored Texas Tech 19-18 to close out the game. The Vaqueros will be back in action on Monday when it visits UTSA at 7 p.m.
