UTRGV Women's Soccer Defeats New Mexico State

GoUTRGV.com El Paso – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s soccer team defeated the New Mexico State Aggies 2-1 on Thursday at University Field, on UTEP’s campus, for its fourth win away from the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. After much of a quiet first half, the Vaqueros (5-3-2, 2-3-1 WAC) got the scoring started in the 44th minute as sophomore Anna Torslov picked up the loose ball and sprinted up the right side. Torslov then found freshman Mari Liis Lillemae in the box who then found freshman Anna Frida Groedem, who put her shot off the cross bar and into the goal giving UTRGV the 1-0 lead. New Mexico State (3-6, 3-3 WAC) put the pressure on the Vaqueros in the second half as Hannah Leitner got the equalizer in the 63rd minute. Later in the half, junior Emily Zapata took a free kick and snuck it past Makenna Gottschalk in the 72nd minute to give the Vaqueros the 2-1 lead. It is Zapata’s 21st goal of her career. Junior Maile Lunardi (5-3-2) made three saves on the night, including one late in the match to keep the lead. UTRGV outshot New Mexico State 13 to 9 and 8 to 4 on goal. UTRGV will be back in action on Saturday, March 11, when closes out its two-game series with New Mexico State in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Senior Javon Levi led the Vaqueros (9-9, 2-5 WAC) with 19 points, a season-high eight rebounds, seven assists and one steal. Senior Anthony Bratton scored nine points with nine rebounds. Montre' Gipson led the Texans (10-10, 5-7 WAC) with 24 points, seven rebounds, five assists and one steal. Konstantin Dotsenko scored 15 points. Freddy Hicks finished with 11 points. Levi opened up the game with a three and added a jumper a few minutes later to give the Vaqueros a 7-5 lead. A three by junior Marek Nelson broke a tie to put the Vaqueros up 10-7, but the Texans responded with an 11-2 run to take an 18-12 lead. Then, with the score 22-16, sophomore Connor Raines hit a three to spark a 7-0 run to put the Vaqueros on top. The Texans scored the next six points to regain the lead, but junior Uche Dibiamaka hit a jumper and then Levi nailed a three right before halftime to tie the game at 28. The game remained tight early in the second half. The Texans pushed their led to 40-33 at the 13:37 mark, but Levi responded with a jumper, a three and two free throws as part of a 9-0 run to give the Vaqueros a 42-40 lead. The Texans responded by scoring the next 13 points to regain the lead. Then, with the score 57-46, a Bratton layup and a Nelson dunk brought the Vaqueros to within seven. One basket later, sophomore Quinton Johnson II made a bucket to make the score 59-52, but that's as close as the Vaqueros got. UTRGV opens the Western Athletic Conference Tournament as the number six seed on Thursday at 10 p.m. at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. Fans in the United States can watch online via ESPN+. GoUTRGV.com STEPHENVILLE – Graduate student Amara Graham became the eighth player in program history to surpass 1,000-career points as The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s basketball team fell 63-52 to the Tarleton Texans on Saturday at Wisdom Gym. The Vaqueros (6-13, 2-8 WAC) have clinched the sixth seed in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament and will face the No. 3 Grand Canyon on Wednesday, March 10, at 10 p.m. at Orleans Arena. UTRGV was led by redshirt junior Burcu Soysal and sophomore Sara Bershers, who scored 10 points each. Graham and sophomore Jena’ Williams scored nine points each with Graham also grabbing nine rebounds with four assists. Tarleton (9-16, 4-10 WAC) got a game-high 20 points from Iyana Dorsey while Marissa Escamilla recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. UTRGV got out to the 3-0 lead early in the first quarter after a hook shot from Soysal. Tarleton answered with an 8-0 run to take the lead before a three-pointer from sophomore Tiffany McGarity stopped the run to make it 8-6. Later in the quarter Graham converted the three-point play to get the Vaqueros within 12-9 but the Texans took the 15-9 lead to end the quarter. The Vaqueros came out in the second quarter with an 8-0 run of their own, which featured Graham’s three-pointer that got her over the 1,000-career point mark, to take the 17-15 lead. The Texans put together another run as they scored seven straight points to regain the 22-17 lead as they took the 26-22 lead into halftime. After an bucket by the Texans to opening the second half, the Vaqueros went on a 6-0 run that was capped by a Graham layup to tie the game at 28-28. Later in the quarter, Tarleton went on a 6-0 run to get out to the 41-32 lead. Bershers knocked down a three-pointer and Soysal made a layup to get the Vaqueros within 43-42 within the opening minutes of the fourth. The Texans pushed their lead to 49-42 after a layup by Dorsey and then went on a 7-2 run to put game out of reach.

Natalie Dixon scored the game-winning goal for the Redhawks (1-2-1, 1-0-1 WAC) in the 80th minute. The Redhawks outshot the Vaqueros (3-1-2, 0-1-1 WAC) 14-9, although the Vaqueros held the advantage in shots on goal 4-2. Junior Emily Zapata attempted a match-high four shots, including one on goal. Sophomore Maile Lunardi (3-1-2) made one save. Madison Waguespack (0-2-1) made four saves for the Redhawks. UTRGV is back in action on Thursday at 6 p.m. against Chicago State at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. A limited number of seats are available as UTRGV Athletics is capping capacity at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex at 150 fans. GoUTRGV.com SEATTLE, Wash. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s basketball team rallied from down by 23 points but fell 71-64 in overtime to the Seattle University Redhawks on Saturday at the Redhawk Center. Sophomore Sara Bershers led the Vaqueros (5-10, 1-5 WAC) with a game-high 24 points on 8-of-19 shooting from the floor, including 5-of-10 from three-point range, and added a career-high 13 rebounds. Graduate student Amara Graham scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds. Seattle U (11-9, 6-4 WAC) was led by McKenzi Williams, who scored 21 points while dishing out four assists. Bree Calhoun recorded a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds while Georgia Kehoe added 12 points and six rebounds. The Vaqueros trailed by 23 points at the half but opened the third quarter with a 13-2 run as a Graham jumper and a free throw from junior Jordan Lewis got UTRGV within 39-27 with 4:34 left in the quarter. Seattle U pushed their lead to 46-31 after three free throws from Howard but UTRGV answered with a 7-0 that was kicked off by a Graham three-pointer and capped by a Lewis layup to make it 46-38. In the fourth, Calhoun made a layup to push the Redhawks lead to 57-43 before Bershers knocked down a three-pointer to kick start another 7-0 UTRGV. Bershers bookended the run with a jumper to get UTRGV within 57-50. After a three-pointer by Vice-Neat, the Vaqueros put together an 11-0 run that saw Bershers hit a pair of three-pointers, including one that gave UTRGV the 61-60 lead. A free throw by Williams tied the game forcing overtime as the Redhawks scored 10 points in overtime to take the win. The Vaqueros will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 26, when it hosts Utah Valley University at 6 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. This is the third time the Vaqueros (3-0-2, 0-0-1 WAC) have played the Redhawks (0-2-1, 0-0-1 WAC) to a tie in their last five meetings, along with scoreless draws on the road in 2017 and at home in 2018. Junior Emily Zapata scored the game-tying goal for the Vaqueros in the 61st minute off of feeds from senior Gina Steiner and sophomore Anna Torslov. Sydney Carr scored the lone Redhawks goal in the 15th minute, taking the ball from a defender and firing it from the right side into the corner of the net. That was all against sophomore Maile Lunardi (3-0-2), who made a career-high nine saves. The Redhawks outshot the Vaqueros 16-12, including 10-4 on goal. The Redhawks outshot the Vaqueros 6-1 in the first half. Over the final 65 minutes, though, the Vaqueros held an 11-10 advantage in shots. Zapata and Torslov each attempted a team-high four shots, with Zapata putting two shots on goal. Madison Waguespack (0-2-1) made three saves for the Redhawks. UTRGV and Seattle U complete the series on Monday at 11 a.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. Attendance is limited only to families of the student-athletes and coaches on the team pass lists. The concession stand will not be open as UTRGV Athletics does not want to try resupplying the concessions stands during a time at which members of the community are trying to fill their own pantries. Graduate student Amara Graham led the Vaqueros (4-5) with 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Sophomore Sara Bershers scored 11 points with a career-high tying seven rebounds. Junior Jessica Martino scored a career-high 11 points with a career-high four rebounds. Sophomore Halie Jones scored 10 points with a career-high tying nine rebounds and season-high three assists. Sophomore Jena' Williams finished with 10 points. Emily Cunningham led the Texans (4-10) with 20 points. Marissa Escamilla scored 17 points, with nine rebounds and two steals. Iyana Dorsey scored 16 points with nine assists and three steals. The Vaqueros jumped out to a 9-6 lead over the first eight minutes. The Texans scored the next 12 points as part of a 25-5 run to go up 31-14 midway through the second quarter. Then, with the score 33-16, Jones made a three as the Vaqueros scored seven-straight points. The Texans answered with a 6-2 run to go up 39-25. Graham and Jones hit baskets right before halftime, kicking off a 15-0 run, capped by a Martin layup at the 6:34 mark of the third quarter, to put the Vaqueros up 40-39. The Vaqueros extended their lead to 46-43 on a Bershers layup before the Texans went on a 7-0 run to regain the lead. Graham responded with two layups to tie the game and then tied the game again in the final minute of the third with a three that made the score 53-53. The Texans, however scored the next eight points as part of a 26-7 run to pull away. UTRGV is set to open Western Athletic Conference play on Friday at 1 p.m. against California Baptist at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. The Vaqueros (8-3, 2-0 WAC) are now off to an 8-3 start for the first time since 2001-02, when the team started 13-3. Senior Javon Levi led the Vaqueros with 16 points and a season-high 11 assists for his first double-double of the season. Junior Sean Rhea scored 12 points with eight rebounds. Senior Chris Freeman scored 11 points with four rebounds. Junior LaQuan Butler scored 10 points with two steals. Junior Uche Dibiamaka also scored 10 points. Cameron Gooden led the Trailblazers (4-5, 0-2 WAC) with 18 points, four assists and two steals. Hunter Schofield finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Jarod Greene scored 10 points. The Trailblazers led 7-4 before Rhea hit three-straight baskets to give the Vaqueros a 10-7 lead. Then with the Vaqueros up 18-14, the Trailblazers scored eight-straight points to take a 22-18 lead. Later, with the Trailblazers still up four, Dibiamaka came up with a one-hand jam as the Vaqueros scored six-straight points to go up 28-26. The Trailblazers led 35-32 late in the half, but a Levi free throw and layup follow by a buzzer-beating layup by senior Rob McClain Jr. put the Vaqueros up 37-35. The game was tied at 40 early in the second half when the Trailblazers went on a 13-7 run to take a 55-49 lead. Butler responded by hitting back-to-back baskets to spark a 15-3 run and give the Vaqueros the lead for good. UTRGV is back in action on Friday at 8 p.m. against New Mexico State at Antelope Gymnasium on the campus of Grand Canyon. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Arizona Plus and Comcast New Mexico.
