GoUTRGV.com May 10, 2026 – STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball closed out the regular season with a 4-2 victory over the Tarleton State Texans on Sunday at Tarleton State Baseball Complex. UTRGV advances to the Lamar Bracket of the Southland Conference Tournament as the No. 3 seed facing No. 6 seed Northwestern State Thursday at 1 p.m. The winner faces the winner of No. 2 Lamar and No. 7 Stephen F. Austin Friday at 6 p.m. while the losers of each game Thursday play an elimination game Friday at 1 p.m. All games of the Southland Conference Tournament are available on ESPN+. In this game, junior Easton Moomau led the Vaqueros (26-27) offensively by going 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk, and two runs scored. Moomau led off the second with a 419’ home run to center to put the Vaqueros up 1-0. It was Moomau’s sixth home run of the season. Moomau started a two-run rally in the sixth with a single. The Vaqueros went on to load the bases with two outs, setting up a two-run double by junior Rocco Garza Gongora to put the Vaqueros up 4-1. It was Garza Gongora’s 19th double of the season, tied with Ivan Estrella (2017) and Osiel Flors (2007) for the second-highest single-season total in program history. The program record of 23 is held by Garrett Bivone (2010). The Texans (33-17) tied the game at 1 in the fourth when Slade McCloud drew a leadoff walk from sophomore Mason Engel (1-1), stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Cage McCloud sacrifice fly. In the fifth, though, senior Rene Galván drew a leadoff walk from Ashton Bassett (1-4). Graduate student Vela alum Rudy Gonzalez followed with a single. One out later, senior Thomas Williams hit a grounder to the right side. The throw to second sailed into left field, allowing Galván to score to put the Vaqueros up 2-1. The Texans pulled within 4-2 in the seventh when Rayner Heinrich drew a bases loaded walk. Freshman Augie Grohman pitched 2.0 scoreless innings for his first-career save. Senior Los Fresnos alum Víctor Loa started and struck out three in 2.0 scoreless innings.
GoUTRGV.com April 3, 2026 – RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team fell to the Northwestern State Demons 9-6 on Friday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in front of a crowd of 2,671. The Vaqueros (14-17, 9-8 SLC) batted around in the first against Dylan Marionneaux (3-2) as the first five batters all had hits. Junior Rocco Garza Gongora opened with a double and senior Thomas Williams hit a single. Juniors Armani Raygoza and PSJA alum Julius Ramirez followed with RBI-singles. Junior Easton Moomau singled to load the bases. One out later, graduate student PSJA alum Diego Villescas walked to force-in a run and senior Hank Warren hit a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-0. Williams finished 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Ramirez went 2-for-5 with an RBI. The Demons (20-10, 12-5 SLC) got one back in the second when J.T. Simonelli led off with a single and Michael McAllose hit an RBI-double to make the score 4-1. The Demons scored a pair of unearned runs in the fourth on a two-run single by Joe Siervo after an inning-extending error to pull within 4-3. Graduate student Aaron Sanchez halted the Demons offense for the next two innings with his second-straight scoreless relief appearance, striking out one while scattering three hits in 2.0 innings. Ethan Menard led off the seventh with a single against senior Steven Oliva (0-2). Simonelli followed with a game-tying double. One out later, Noah McNeil, Zach White, and Sam Ardoin all singled, with McNeil and Ardoin driving in runs. Brooks Leonard capped the inning by reaching on an error that allowed Ardoin to score to put the Demons up 7-4. The Vaqueros loaded the bases on walks against Jacob LeBlanc with one out in the eighth. Villescas walked to force-in a run and Warren hit a sacrifice fly to bring the Vaqueros within 7-6. LeBlanc bounced back with a scoreless ninth for his first save. The Demons added two insurance runs in the ninth, as with a runner at third and one out, McNeil hit an RBI-double and White hit an RBI-single. UTRGV and Northwestern State complete this series Saturday at 1 p.m. during Bark in the Park, presented by Raising Cane's. Dogs will receive free bandanas while supplies last. GoUTRGV.com May 8, 2022 – BEAUMONT, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team beat the Lamar Cardinals 6-1 on Sunday at Vincent-Beck Stadium to clinch both a weekend (2-1) and season (4-2) series victories. The Vaqueros (29-20, 14-10 WAC) and Cardinals (29-19, 14-10 WAC) are now tied for second place in the Western Athletic Conference Southwest Division standings with six games remaining. Graduate student Bryan Sturges led the Vaqueros offensively by going 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, a career-high tying five RBI and one run scored. Graduate student Cameron Blake went a career-high tying 3-for-4 with an RBI and a career-high tying two runs scored. Junior Brandon Pimentel finished 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Sturges launched a three-run home run off Daniel Cole (2-3) to give the Vaqueros a 3-0 lead in the first. Sturges now has a career-high eight home runs this season. Blake hit a two-out RBI-single in the second to make the score 4-0. This was it until the fifth, when Sturges hit a two-run double to make the score 6-0. That made a winner of freshman Randy Garza (2-1), who struck out two while scattering two hits and three walks in a career-high 7.0 innings. The Cardinals scored their run in the ninth when Kelby Weyler hit into a fielder’s choice. UTRGV plays its final three home games against first place Sam Houston in a series presented by G3 Scrap Metal starting Friday at 7 p.m. at UTRGV Baseball Stadium. It’s Community Heroes Night. The Vaqueros (28-20, 13-10 WAC) and Cardinals (29-18, 13-10 WAC) are now tied for second place in the Western Athletic Conference Southwest Division standings. Graduate student Jesus Aldaz (5-4) allowed three hits in the first inning, but thanks in-part to a double play, didn’t allow anything across. Aldaz allowed just four more hits over the next 5.1 innings and didn’t allow a run until the sixth when Chase Kemp hit a two-out solo home run. Matthew McDonald opened the seventh with a solo home run. Then, with two outs in the inning, Ethan Ruiz hit a two-run home run to make the score 5-2. Aldaz struck out three without walking anybody while allowing three runs on seven hits in a career-high 6.1 innings. The Vaqueros scored their runs in the fifth against Adam Wheaton (8-2). Graduate student Brett Cain led off with a triple. One out later, junior Diego Ramirez hit an RBI-single, stole second and advanced to third on an error. That set up a sacrifice fly by freshman Vela alum Isaac Lopez to make the score 2-0. Cain went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and a run scored. Ramirez finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Wheaton allowed six hits without a walk while striking out five in 7.1 innings. Jack Dallas recorded the final four outs for his 10th save. Graduate student Brett Cain led the Vaqueros (23-18) offensively by going 2-for-4 with a home run and a walk. Junior Chris Mondesi went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run scored. Down 3-0 in the fourth, the Vaqueros put runners on the corners with one out. Cain took off from first on a ball in the dirt. The throw came through, allowing junior Brandon Pimentel to take off from third and score the Vaqueros’ first run. The Vaqueros tied the game in the sixth on a two-out, two-run single by graduate student Cameron Blake. Diego Johnson responded with an RBI-single in the bottom of the inning to put the Islanders (20-22) back on top before Cain hit his eighth home run of the season against Clay Westbrook (3-1) to tie the game at 4 in the seventh. The Islanders struck back in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with nobody out against junior Alex Verdugo (0-1) before plating runs on three wild pitches, a Leo Markotic groundout, and a Cole Modgling triple to take a 9-4 lead. The Islanders added three runs in the eighth on a two-out triple by Josh Caraway and a two-run double by Max Puls. The Vaqueros completed the scoring in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by graduate student Bryan Sturges. The Vaqueros (23-16, 9-9 WAC) scored four runs in the sixth to come back from a 2-0 deficit. Graduate student Jacob Hirsh led off the inning with a single and then freshman Vela alum Isaac Lopez hit an RBI-double. Graduate student Cameron Blake followed with a four-pitch walk before junior Diego Ramirez belted a three-run home run, his second of the season and of the week, to put the Vaqueros up 4-2. The Wildcats (19-20, 8-10 WAC) tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a Brett Hammit two-run home run. The Vaqueros regained the lead in the seventh on an RBI-single by junior Chris Mondesi. The Wildcats came right back to tie the game at 5 in the bottom of the inning on a Tanner Tweedt RBI-double. That was it until the ninth. Graduate student Freddy Rojas Jr. led off with a double against Tanner Riley (2-3). Sophomore PSJA alum Jacob Sanchez laid down a sacrifice bunt, but the throw to first got away, allowing pinch-runner and sophomore Spencer Serven to score. After another sacrifice bunt, Mondesi hit an RBI-single to put the Vaqueros up 7-5. That made a winner of senior Ricky Gerik Jr. (3-3), who pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out two. Offensively, Mondesi went a career-best 3-for-5 with two RBI. Lopez went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Hirsh went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Junior Brandon Pimentel went 2-for-5. Rojas finished 2-for-4 with a walk. Blake reached base three times, doubling, and drawing two walks. Ramirez reached twice, adding a walk to his home run. The Wildcats initially got on the board in the third on a Colton Eager home run. Then, in the fourth, Alexei Cazarin hit a two-out RBI-single to make the score 2-0. UTRGV hosts #7 Texas for the first time in 51 years on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at UTRGV Baseball Stadium. The game is sold out, although tickets have been set aside for current UTRGV students, who get in free with their student ID. With the game scoreless in the third, Cardinals (15-18) leadoff man Taylor Darden drew a leadoff walk. Roberto Gonzalez followed with a ground ball up the middle. Junior Diego Ramirez ranged far to his right and grabbed the ball while dragging his toe across the second base bag for the force. He then made an off-balance throw to first to complete the double play. In the fourth, Nixon Brannan hit a hot shot into the shortstop hole. Freshman Vela alum Isaac Lopez went to his knees to stop the ball on the backhand. He got to his feet and made a strong throw to first to end the inning. In the sixth, with a runner at third and two outs, Brannan hit a deep fly ball to left field. Junior Brandon Pimentel raced back, and with his back to the infield, leapt and reached up as far as he could to make the catch to end the inning. In the seventh, Wilson Ehrhardt hit a chopper up the middle. Lopez ranged behind the second base bag to make the grab while throwing on the run to get the out. In the eighth, with two on and one out, graduate student Jacob Hirsh came racing in from center field to make a catch near the infield. In the ninth, Robert Gonzalez lifted a fly ball down the right field line. Graduate student Brett Cain raced in and toward the line and made a sliding catch. There were big moments for the pitchers as well. The Cardinals put two on with two outs against freshman Randy Garza (1-0) in the second, but Garza recorded a strikeout to escape the threat. Then, in the third, with a runner at second and two outs, Garza froze Herman Yanez to end the inning. Garza racked up a career-high four strikeouts in a career-high 4.1 innings for his first-career win. The Cardinals put runners on the corners with one out in the fifth. Senior Ricky Gerik Jr. came into the game and got an infield pop out and a strikeout to end the threat. The Cardinals loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth. Graduate student Max Balderrama Jr. came out of the pen to get a fly out on the first pitch he threw. The Vaqueros (21-15) scored their first run against Aaron Celestino (3-2) in the third on a sacrifice fly by graduate student Bryan Sturges. The Vaqueros added three more runs in the fourth on an RBI-single by graduate student Freddy Rojas Jr., a wild pitch that scored Ramirez, and an RBI-groundout by junior Raul Ortega. Sturges belted a two-run home run, his fifth, in the fifth inning to put the Vaqueros up 6-0. The Cardinals scored their run in the seventh on a home run by Zach Limas. The Vaqueros got that run right back in the bottom of the inning on a Pimentel RBI-double. Ramirez added a two-run home run, the first of his career, to put the Vaqueros up 9-1. The Cardinals pushed two more across in the ninth on two-out singles by Yanez and Jimmy DeLeon. Ramirez finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Cain went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Rojas finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Junior Chris Mondesi went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Sturges drove-in a game-high three runs.
