https://goutrgv.com/news/2020/3/7/mens-basketball-beats-california-baptist-in-overtime-to-clinch-no-2-seed-in-wac-tournament.aspx March 7, 2020 – RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team clinched the No. 2 seed in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament, the highest seed in program history, by closing out the regular season with a 79-76 overtime victory over the California Baptist University Lancers on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse in front of a raucous crowd of 1,523. After going 8-2 in its final 10 games, UTRGV (14-16, 9-7 WAC) rolls into a WAC Tournament Quarterfinals matchup with seventh-seeded CSU Bakersfield on Thursday at 8 p.m. at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas on ESPN+. The winner will face either No. 3 Seattle U or No. 6 Utah Valley in the semifinals on Friday at 10:30 on ESPN+. The championship game is set for Saturday at 9 p.m. on ESPNU. Graduate student Jordan Jackson led the Vaqueros with 24 points, three assists and two blocks. Senior Lesley Varner II scored 22 points with a career-high seven steals, tied for the 10th-highest single-game total in program history. Junior Javon Levi scored eight points with a career-high tying 13 assists, a season-high tying five steals and five rebounds. Senior Isaiah Fontaine finished with five points with four rebounds. Milan Acquaah led the Lancers (21-10, 10-6 WAC) with 18 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Dejon Davis scored 15 points with 11 rebounds. Ferron Flavors Jr. finished with 15 points. The Vaqueros trailed 52-46 with 8:34 remaining in the second half. Junior Rob McClain Jr. responded with a layup and Varner came up with a dunk to spark an 8-2 run to tie the game at 54. Flavors and Kuol answered with threes to put the Lancers up 60-56. Then, with the score 62-58, Jackson made a layup and Varner hit two free throws to tie the game. The Vaqueros trailed 67-64 in the final minute before Levi hit a game-tying three with 21 seconds left to force overtime. The Lancers jumped out to a 74-70 lead with 1:51 left in the extra session, but four Varner free throws sandwiched a Jackson layup to give the Vaqueros the lead. A Davis layup tied the game with seven seconds left before Varner came down the court and hit a game-winning three. Jackson opened the game with a jumper and a dunk and then freshman Quinton Johnson II nailed a three as the Vaqueros jumped out to a 7-2 lead. The Lancers responded with a 16-6 run to go up 18-13. The Lancers extended their lead to 28-22 late in the half, but a jumper and a free throw by Fontaine and a three at the buzzer by Johnson allowed the Vaqueros to go into halftime down just 30-28. The Vaqueros scored the first four points of the second half to take the lead before an Acquaah three sparked a 14-6 run to put the Lancers up 44-38.

UTRGV (13-16, 8-7 WAC) now leads Seattle U (7-7 WAC) and Kansas City (7-7 WAC) by half a game and Grand Canyon (12-17, 7-8 WAC) by one game. Senior Lesley Varner II led the Vaqueros with 32 points on 9-of-16 shooting, including 5-of-6 from behind the arc, with seven rebounds. Junior Javon Levi scored a career-high 25 points with four assists and three steals. Junior Chris Freeman scored a career-high 18 points. Freshman Quinton Johnson II finished with seven points, five rebounds and two assists. Alessandro Lever led the Lopes with 18 points and six rebounds. Isiah Brown scored 17 points. Jovan Blacksher Jr. scored 15 points, with five rebounds and five assists. Carlos Johnson scored 11 points with five rebounds. Lorenzo Jenkins finished with 10 points and six rebounds. The Lopes led briefly in the second half, going up 68-65 after trailing for the majority of the game. That's when Freeman drilled a three from the right corner, drew the foul and hit the free throw to spark the Vaqueros. Varner followed with a three and Levi hit a jumper to put the Vaqueros up 74-68. The Lopes got as close as four at 76-72, but Varner responded with a three-point play and Johnson made a backdoor layup as the Vaqueros put the game on ice. The Vaqueros came out on fire in the first half, going up 9-2 on a Freeman three. Then, with the score 14-9, Varner and Johnson made back-to-back threes and Varner hit a jumper to put the Vaqueros up 22-9. The Vaqueros extended their lead to 14 at 34-20 on a Freeman three midway through the half. The Vaqueros took their largest lead with 7:23 remaining in the first half when a Levi layup made the score 40-24. The Lopes closed to within five early in the second half before a Varner three punctuated a 7-2 run to give the Vaqueros a 56-46 lead. The Lopes followed with a 16-5 run to tie the game to take their first lead at 62-61. UTRGV closes out the regular season on Saturday at 7 p.m. against California Baptist University at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. There will be a special senior day ceremony to honor the graduating senior class before the game. It's season ticket holder appreciation night. UTRGV (12-16, 7-7 WAC) is now tied with Grand Canyon (7-7 WAC) and a half game behind Seattle U (7-6 WAC) in the race for the No. 2 seed in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament. UTRGV visits Grand Canyon on Saturday at 7 p.m. while Seattle U visits California Baptist an hour later. Senior Lesley Varner II led the Vaqueros with 18 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Junior Javon Levi scored 15 points with three rebounds, three assists and one steal. Junior Chris Freeman finished with 11 points and five rebounds. Shawn Stith led the 'Runners (12-17, 6-8 WAC) with 21 points. Taze Moore scored 18 points with four rebounds and three assists. De'Monte Buckingham scored 15 points with five rebounds. Czar Perry finished with 12 points, three assists and three steals. The 'Runners jumped out to a 21-5 lead over the first 10:15. Varner and Levi responded with consecutive jumpers as the Vaqueros scored six of the next eight points. The Vaqueros got as close as 12 at 34-22 on a pair of free throws by junior Rob McClain Jr. with 2:01 remaining in the first, but the 'Runners scored the final 10 points of the half to go up 44-22. Levi started the second half with a three as the Vaqueros scored the first eight points to pull within 44-30. Then, with the score 50-33, Varner made a jumper and Freeman hit a layup to bring the Vaqueros within 50-37. The Vaqueros were again as close as 14 at 55-41 on a Levi layup with 11:02 to go, but the 'Runners scored the next six points as part of a 12-4 run to restore their 22-point lead and push the game out of reach.

The Vaqueros (12-15, 7-7 WAC) went 29-for-58 from the field, including 10-for-21 (47.6 percent) from downtown. This is the second time the Vaqueros have shot 50 percent from the field in Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play this season after previously doing so on Jan. 11 at Chicago State. This was the Vaqueros’ best three-point shooting performance in a WAC game this season. Junior Trelynn Tyler led the Vaqueros with 27 points while hitting a career-high five three-pointers for the second-straight game to go with six assists and three steals. Junior Amara Graham scored 12 points with five assists. Junior Brownsville Saint Joseph alum Valeria Tapia scored 10 points with five rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Ashlei Lopez scored 10 points with five rebounds. Graduate student Desirea Buerge finished with nine points, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Jayden Eggleston led the ‘Runners (15-12, 7-7 WAC) with 14 points, six rebounds and three steals. Miracle Saxon scored 12 points with five steals. Vanessa Austin finished with 11 points and eight rebounds. The Vaqueros led twice in the opening minutes, at 3-2 on a Graham three and 5-4 on a Tapia jumper. The game stayed tight for the rest of the quarter, with the Vaqueros tying the game at 21 on a Tyler three early in the second. The ‘Runners scored the next seven points before a Tyler jumper and layups by Buerge, freshman Iva Belosevic and Lopez put the Vaqueros up 29-28. Two baskets later, with the score tied at 31, the ‘Runners went on an 11-0 run to take a 42-31 lead early in the third quarter. The Vaqueros responded by scoring the next seven points as part of a 17-6 run, capped by a Lopez jumper, to tie the game at 48. The ‘Runners regained the lead at 54-51 before a pair of Tyler threes sandwiched a layup and a free throw by Buerge to restore the Vaqueros’ lead. Then, with the Vaqueros’ lead cut to 62-61, a Graham three helped the Vaqueros score nine-straight points as part of an 12-2 run to push the game out of reach. UTRGV plays its final home game on Saturday at 12 p.m. against Grand Canyon. There will be a special pregame ceremony honoring the graduating senior class. Junior Trelynn Tyler led the Vaqueros (10-15, 5-7 WAC) with 14 points and five rebounds. Graduate student Desirea Buerge finished with 13 points and eight rebounds. Senior Megan Johnson scored 12 points with seven rebounds. Freshman Sara Bershers scored 10 points. Joana Alves led the Redhawks (12-12, 6-5 WAC) with 19 points and six rebounds. Kamira Sanders scored 16 points with six rebounds. Courtney Murphy scored 15 points. Olivia Crawford scored 14 points with six rebounds. Buerge and Bershers hit a pair of early threes as the Vaqueros jumped out to an 8-4 lead. The Vaqueros extended their lead to 12-7 on a layup by freshman Halie Jones and 19-13 on a layup by sophomore Asheli Lopez. The Redhawks responded with a 9-0 run to take the lead. Bershers tied the game at 22 with a three and then Tyler tied the game at 25 with a three of her own. The Vaqueros trailed by one at halftime and were within 34-33 in the opening minutes of the third thanks to a Johnson layup. The Redhawks followed with a 10-2 run to go up 44-35. The Vaqueros were still within nine at 55-46 late in the third when the Redhawks went on a 14-4 run to go up 69-50. Then, down 71-52, a Jones three sparked a 16-4 run to bring the Vaqueros within 75-68. The Vaqueros were still within seven at 77-70, but that's as close as they got. UTRGV is back in action on Saturday at 12 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse against New Mexico State in a rematch of last season's WAC Tournament Championship Game. Graduate student Jordan Jackson led the Vaqueros (7-14, 3-5 WAC) with 17 points. Freshman Quinton Johnson II scored 11 points with a career-high nine rebounds, three assists and a career-high tying three steals. Junior Javon Levi scored 11 points with four rebounds, six assists and two steals. Sophomore Sean Rhea finished with nine points, four rebounds and one steal. Greg Lee led the Runners (10-13, 4-4 WAC) with 18 points and six rebounds. Czar Perry finished with 11 points. The Runners led 23-12 with 7:58 remaining in the first half. That's when the Vaqueros went on a 10-2 run that included a Johnson dunk and a layup by junior Anthony Bratton to pull within 25-22. A Rhea dunk and free throw toward the end of the half brought the Vaqueros to within 31-29. The Vaqueros then opened the second half on a 15-4 run that included a go-ahead dunk by Jackson to go up 44-38. The Runners pulled within two twice, including at 49-47 with 9:46 remaining. The Vaqueros responded with a 9-0 run that included a layup, a three and a free throw by Johnson, to extend their lead to 58-47. The Vaqueros led by at least eight the rest of the way. UTRGV visits Kansas City on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Graduate student Jordan Agustus led the Vaqueros (8-10, 3-2 WAC) with 17 points and seven rebounds. Junior Amara Graham scored 14 points with six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Graduate student Desirea Buerge finished with 13 points. Eve Braslis led the Wolverines (8-9, 5-0 WAC) with 18 points, six rebounds and four assists. Alexis Cortez scored 17 points with seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Jordan Holland scored 16 points with nine rebounds. Nehaa Sohail scored 13 points with six rebounds and five assists. Maria Carvalho dished out 10 assists with six rebounds, four points and two steals. Agustus hit her first four shots to help the Vaqueros jump out to a 13-4 lead over the first five minutes. The Wolverines responded by scoring the next 11 points to take a 15-13 lead. Then, with the score tied at 15, the Wolverines went on a 7-0 to retake the lead at 22-15. A three by junior Iva Belosevic sparked an 8-2 run to bring the Vaqueros to within 24-23. The Vaqueros then tied the game at 28 on a Graham three and 30 on Graham free throws before a Graham layup made the score 32-32 going into halftime. The Wolverines scored the first 11 points of the third quarter to take a 43-32 lead. The Vaqueros cut into that lead with an 11-5 run that featured two three-pointers, a layup and three free throws by Buerge to pull within 57-51 at the start of the fourth. Then, with the score 62-51, a pair of Graham free throws, a layup by junior Zhane Templeton, a pair of Agustus free throws and an Agustus layup allowed the Vaqueros to pull within three at 62-59. Cortez responded with a three before Templeton made two free throws and Agustus converted a three-point play to bring the Vaqueros to within 65-64, but the Wolverines scored the next nine points to push the game out of reach. UTRGV is back in action on Thursday at 7 p.m. at five-time defending Western Athletic Conference Champion New Mexico State.

Mattia Da Campo scored 11 points with seven rebounds. Terrell Brown scored eight points with six rebounds, nine assists, three blocks and two steals. Varner hit two three-pointers and a jumper to help the Vaqueros jump out to a 17-5 lead. Two minutes later, Jackson hit a pair of free throws and junior Rob McClain Jr. sunk a jumper to make the score 21-10. The Redhawks responded with a 15-2 run, bookended by Carter layups, to take a 25-23 lead. A Varner jumper tied the game, and then after a Carter free throw, Varner hit two free throws of his own to put the Vaqueros up 27-26. The Redhawks followed with a 12-3 run before a three by junior Chris Freeman brought the Vaqueros within 38-33 at halftime. The Vaqueros got as close as three twice early in the second half when a Rhea layup made the score 40-37 and a Rhea dunk made the score 42-39, but the Redhawks scored the next seven points and led by at least eight the rest of the way.
