Junior Uche Dibiamaka led the Vaqueros (9-6, 2-2 WAC) with a career-high 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Senior Javon Levi scored 15 points with six assists and one steal. Senior Anthony Bratton scored 14 points with five rebounds. Junior Marek Nelson finished with 10 points. Fardaws Aimaq led the Wolverines (10-9, 8-3 WAC) with 16 points and 16 rebounds. Evan Cole scored 14 points with 11 rebounds. Jamison Overton finished with 14 points. Levi started the game with a steal and then went coast-to-coast for a layup. The Wolverines responded with a 17-6 run to take the lead. Dibiamaka scored the Vaqueros' next nine points to bring the Vaqueros to within 23-17. The Wolverines pushed their lead to 27-19, but the Vaqueros responded with an 8-3 run to climb to within 30-27. The Wolverines scored the final eight points of the half to go up 38-27. The Wolverines took their largest lead at 54-37 with 12:48 remaining. That's when Nelson and Levi hit three-pointers, Bratton made a layup and then Levi hit another three to power an 11-0 run, making the score 54-48. Overton answered with a three-pointer, two free throws and two layups to push the Wolverines' lead back into double-figures at 61-48. The Vaqueros got the deficit under 10 three more time when a Dibiamaka three made the score 65-56 with 4:59 remaining, a three by junior LaQuan Butler made the score 68-59 with 3:07 to go, and a three-point play by Levi made the score 73-64 with 18 seconds left. UTRGV visits New Mexico State on Tuesday at 12 p.m. at UTEP's Haskins Center. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Arizona, Comcast New Mexico and The CW Las Cruces/El Paso. Natalie Dixon scored the game-winning goal for the Redhawks (1-2-1, 1-0-1 WAC) in the 80th minute. The Redhawks outshot the Vaqueros (3-1-2, 0-1-1 WAC) 14-9, although the Vaqueros held the advantage in shots on goal 4-2. Junior Emily Zapata attempted a match-high four shots, including one on goal. Sophomore Maile Lunardi (3-1-2) made one save. Madison Waguespack (0-2-1) made four saves for the Redhawks. UTRGV is back in action on Thursday at 6 p.m. against Chicago State at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. GoUTRGV.com SEATTLE, Wash. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s basketball team rallied from down by 23 points but fell 71-64 in overtime to the Seattle University Redhawks on Saturday at the Redhawk Center. Sophomore Sara Bershers led the Vaqueros (5-10, 1-5 WAC) with a game-high 24 points on 8-of-19 shooting from the floor, including 5-of-10 from three-point range, and added a career-high 13 rebounds. Graduate student Amara Graham scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds. Seattle U (11-9, 6-4 WAC) was led by McKenzi Williams, who scored 21 points while dishing out four assists. Bree Calhoun recorded a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds while Georgia Kehoe added 12 points and six rebounds. The Vaqueros trailed by 23 points at the half but opened the third quarter with a 13-2 run as a Graham jumper and a free throw from junior Jordan Lewis got UTRGV within 39-27 with 4:34 left in the quarter. Seattle U pushed their lead to 46-31 after three free throws from Howard but UTRGV answered with a 7-0 that was kicked off by a Graham three-pointer and capped by a Lewis layup to make it 46-38. In the fourth, Calhoun made a layup to push the Redhawks lead to 57-43 before Bershers knocked down a three-pointer to kick start another 7-0 UTRGV. Bershers bookended the run with a jumper to get UTRGV within 57-50. After a three-pointer by Vice-Neat, the Vaqueros put together an 11-0 run that saw Bershers hit a pair of three-pointers, including one that gave UTRGV the 61-60 lead. A free throw by Williams tied the game forcing overtime as the Redhawks scored 10 points in overtime to take the win. The Vaqueros will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 26, when it hosts Utah Valley University at 6 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. This is the third time the Vaqueros (3-0-2, 0-0-1 WAC) have played the Redhawks (0-2-1, 0-0-1 WAC) to a tie in their last five meetings, along with scoreless draws on the road in 2017 and at home in 2018. Junior Emily Zapata scored the game-tying goal for the Vaqueros in the 61st minute off of feeds from senior Gina Steiner and sophomore Anna Torslov. Sydney Carr scored the lone Redhawks goal in the 15th minute, taking the ball from a defender and firing it from the right side into the corner of the net. That was all against sophomore Maile Lunardi (3-0-2), who made a career-high nine saves. The Redhawks outshot the Vaqueros 16-12, including 10-4 on goal. The Redhawks outshot the Vaqueros 6-1 in the first half. Over the final 65 minutes, though, the Vaqueros held an 11-10 advantage in shots. Zapata and Torslov each attempted a team-high four shots, with Zapata putting two shots on goal. Madison Waguespack (0-2-1) made three saves for the Redhawks. UTRGV and Seattle U complete the series on Monday at 11 a.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. Attendance is limited only to families of the student-athletes and coaches on the team pass lists. The concession stand will not be open as UTRGV Athletics does not want to try resupplying the concessions stands during a time at which members of the community are trying to fill their own pantries. GoUTRGV.com PHOENIX, Ariz. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s basketball team fell 83-73 to Grand Canyon University (GCU) in the series finale on Sunday at GCU Arena. Graduate student Amara Graham led the Vaqueros (4-7, 0-2 WAC) with 21 points, her fifth 20-point game of the season, while grabbing six rebounds. Redshirt junior Burcu Soysal added 14 points with five rebounds. Junior Jordan Lewis just missed a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds. GCU (13-3, 5-1 WAC) 21 points and five rebounds from Katie Scott. Laura Piera scored 16 points with five rebounds and four assists. Ny’Dajah Jackson chipped in with 15 points while Tiarra Brown scored 11 points. GCU came out and took the 7-2 lead after a three-pointer by Piera but the Vaqueros answered back with a 15-0 run as the offense got things going. The run started with a pair of free throws from Graham and was capped by a layup by junior Jessica Martino as UTRGV held the 22-12 lead at the end of the first. In the second quarter, Soysal converted on a three-point play that made it 29-19 UTRGV with 7:26 left in the half. GCU put together a 9-2 run to get within 31-28 but a layup by Lewis at the buzzer gave UTRGV the 39-33 lead at the half. GCU’s offense came alive in the third quarter as it scored the first nine points of the second half taking the 42-39 lead, which they would not relinquish the rest of the way. Soysal knocked down a couple of free throws and made a layup to get UTRGV within 53-46 but GCU pushed their lead back up to 58-46 after a layup by Piera with 3:34 left in the third. Sophomore Tiffany McGarity did her best to keep the Vaqueros in the game as she took a steal and converted the fast break layup to make it 66-59 but GCU took their biggest lead of the game at 75-61 after a couple of free throws by Scott keeping UTRGV at bay the rest of the way. UTRGV will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 12, when it hosts California Baptist at 1 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. UTRGV also plays Lamar on Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. and Feb. 21 at 12 p.m. UTRGV plays its next five games against Power 5 competition, visiting Baylor for a mid-week game and Washington for a four-game series before returning home to host Northern Illinois March 5-7 with games at 1 p.m., 2 and 12, respectively. Baylor and Washington both received votes in Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's (CBN) preseason poll. In total, UTRGV is scheduled to play 25 games against teams ranked or receiving votes in the CBN, D1Baseball.com and/or Baseball America preseason polls, including a home game against No. 30 Texas State on April 6 at 6 p.m., and road games at No. 7 Arizona State (March 10), No. 9 Texas (March 16), No. 10 TCU (May 11), No. 21 Dallas Baptist (March 25-28), Grand Canyon (March 12-14), New Mexico State (April 30-May 1) and Sacramento State (May 20-22) "I think the balance in our schedule is outstanding," UTRGV head coach Derek Matlock said. "We face some outstanding teams on the road and that's exciting. We're playing a very tough schedule. It's going to be a great test." After the Northern Illinois series, UTRGV plays its next 13 games on the road, starting with the WAC opening four-game series at Grand Canyon. All WAC series will consist of four games this year with a doubleheader on Saturday. The first game of each doubleheader will be scheduled to last seven innings while the second game will be scheduled for the full nine innings. All WAC series will have consistent start times with opening night at 6 p.m. local time, the day two doubleheader starting at 1, and get away day starting at 12, unless otherwise indicated. The trip continues on March 16 at Texas before another WAC series at Dixie State March 19-21. UTRGV closes out the road stretch with four games at Dallas Baptist March 25-28. UTRGV returns home on March 30 at 6 p.m. to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union. This is the start of a 10-game home stand stretch of 14 out of 15 games at home, with the lone road game being a trip to Corpus Christi as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, on April 13. UTRGV will play three-straight home WAC series to start April, beginning with California Baptist April 1-3, continuing with Utah Valley April 9-11, and concluding with Seattle U April 23-25. UTRGV will face New Mexico State April 30-May 2 and then play its final two home WAC series May 7-9 against Tarleton and May 14-16 against Northern Colorado. UTRGV will visit TCU on May 11 and close out the regular season May 20-22 at Sacramento State. The top six teams in the WAC advance to the WAC Tournament, which runs May 26-30 at Hohokam Stadium, the spring training home of the Oakland Athletics, in Mesa, Ariz. The WAC Tournament Champion earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. "The things I'm hearing about some of the other teams, such as Grand Canyon, Sacramento State, California Baptist, Dixie State, Utah Valley and all these other teams is how good they are and how excited their coaching staff are," Matlock said. "I think this could be a year in which the WAC gets an at-large. I think there's that many good teams in the league. The coaches are outstanding, and the student-athletes play hard. It's just an exciting time in the WAC right now with as good as our teams have become." Graduate student Amara Graham led the Vaqueros (4-5) with 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Sophomore Sara Bershers scored 11 points with a career-high tying seven rebounds. Junior Jessica Martino scored a career-high 11 points with a career-high four rebounds. Sophomore Halie Jones scored 10 points with a career-high tying nine rebounds and season-high three assists. Sophomore Jena' Williams finished with 10 points. Emily Cunningham led the Texans (4-10) with 20 points. Marissa Escamilla scored 17 points, with nine rebounds and two steals. Iyana Dorsey scored 16 points with nine assists and three steals. The Vaqueros jumped out to a 9-6 lead over the first eight minutes. The Texans scored the next 12 points as part of a 25-5 run to go up 31-14 midway through the second quarter. Then, with the score 33-16, Jones made a three as the Vaqueros scored seven-straight points. The Texans answered with a 6-2 run to go up 39-25. Graham and Jones hit baskets right before halftime, kicking off a 15-0 run, capped by a Martin layup at the 6:34 mark of the third quarter, to put the Vaqueros up 40-39. The Vaqueros extended their lead to 46-43 on a Bershers layup before the Texans went on a 7-0 run to regain the lead. Graham responded with two layups to tie the game and then tied the game again in the final minute of the third with a three that made the score 53-53. The Texans, however scored the next eight points as part of a 26-7 run to pull away. UTRGV is set to open Western Athletic Conference play on Friday at 1 p.m. against California Baptist at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
