UTRGV Women's Basketball Rallies but Falls Short in Overtime to Seattle U

GoUTRGV.com SEATTLE, Wash. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s basketball team rallied from down by 23 points but fell 71-64 in overtime to the Seattle University Redhawks on Saturday at the Redhawk Center. Sophomore Sara Bershers led the Vaqueros (5-10, 1-5 WAC) with a game-high 24 points on 8-of-19 shooting from the floor, including 5-of-10 from three-point range, and added a career-high 13 rebounds. Graduate student Amara Graham scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds. Seattle U (11-9, 6-4 WAC) was led by McKenzi Williams, who scored 21 points while dishing out four assists. Bree Calhoun recorded a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds while Georgia Kehoe added 12 points and six rebounds. The Vaqueros trailed by 23 points at the half but opened the third quarter with a 13-2 run as a Graham jumper and a free throw from junior Jordan Lewis got UTRGV within 39-27 with 4:34 left in the quarter. Seattle U pushed their lead to 46-31 after three free throws from Howard but UTRGV answered with a 7-0 that was kicked off by a Graham three-pointer and capped by a Lewis layup to make it 46-38. In the fourth, Calhoun made a layup to push the Redhawks lead to 57-43 before Bershers knocked down a three-pointer to kick start another 7-0 UTRGV. Bershers bookended the run with a jumper to get UTRGV within 57-50. After a three-pointer by Vice-Neat, the Vaqueros put together an 11-0 run that saw Bershers hit a pair of three-pointers, including one that gave UTRGV the 61-60 lead. A free throw by Williams tied the game forcing overtime as the Redhawks scored 10 points in overtime to take the win. The Vaqueros will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 26, when it hosts Utah Valley University at 6 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
