https://goutrgv.com/news/2021/5/2/baseball-belts-five-home-runs-in-loss-at-new-mexico-state.aspx May 2, 2021 – LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team hit a program record-tying six home runs for the first time in 21 years but fell to the New Mexico State University Aggies 11-10 on Sunday at Presley Askew Field. The Vaqueros (22-20, 13-11 WAC) last hit six home runs in a game in 2000 against Western Illinois. The Vaqueros also hit six against William Penn in 1991. This is the first time the Vaqueros have ever hit more than three home runs against a conference opponent, a feat the Vaqueros last accomplished in Friday's 8-5 victory over the Aggies (17-25, 14-14 WAC). The Vaqueros finished the series with 11 home runs. Graduate student Andy Atwood hit his sixth home run and senior Elijah Alexander hit his third home run of the season to bring the Vaqueros to within 3-2 against Cam Blazek (3-1) in the fourth. Junior Freddy Rojas Jr. hit his eighth home run of the season to bring the Vaqueros to within 6-3 in the fifth. Junior Vela alum RJ Ochoa and senior Jacob Hirsh led off the eighth with back-to-back home runs, their third and second home runs of the season, respectively, to bring the Vaqueros to within 9-8. Then, in the ninth, Ochoa launched a two-run home run, marking his first-career multi-home run game and his fourth home run of the season, to bring the Vaqueros to within 11-10. Hirsh finished a career-high tying 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Ochoa went a career-high tying 3-for-4 with two home runs, a career-high tying three RBI and a career-high three runs scored. Atwood finished 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Alexander went 2-for-5 with a home run, an RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Jacob Flores finished 2-for-5. Sophomore Jesse Fonteboa also supplied a big hit, clearing the bases with a two-out double in the sixth to bring the Vaqueros to within 9-6. The Aggies put up three runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. In the third, Ethan Mann drew a bases-loaded walk from sophomore Colten Davis (4-1) and Cal Villareal followed with a two-run single to make the score 3-0. In the fourth, Brandon Dieter hit a solo home run and Kevin Jimenez hit a two-run double to make the score 6-2. In the fifth, Dieter hit an RBI-single and Tommy Tabak hit a two-run single to make the score 9-3. Then with the score 9-8 with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Mann hit a two-run home run to complete the scoring. Lyle Hibbits recorded the final four outs for his first save. Graduate student Coleman Grubbs led the Vaqueros (22-18, 13-9 WAC) offensively by going a career-high tying 4-for-4 with a career-high tying two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored. Grubbs now has two four-hit games in his career, with the other also coming at New Mexico State on May 4, 2019. Sophomore Jesse Fonteboa recorded his first three RBI and his first hit, a home run, while walking and scoring twice. Grubbs got the Vaqueros off to a good start, leading off the first with a double against Sammy Natera (1-2), moving to third on a fly ball and scoring on a groundout by graduate student Andy Atwood. Kevin Jimenez hit a two-run home run off sophomore J.C. Ariza (0-3) in the bottom of the inning to give the Aggies (15-25, 12-14 WAC) a 2-1 lead. The Vaqueros regained the lead in the top of the second on a two-out double by postbaccalaureate student Christian Sepulveda and an RBI-bunt single by Grubbs. In the bottom of the inning, though, Tommy Tabak scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Then, with two outs, Cal Villareal hit a two-run single, Ronnie Allen Jr. hit an RBI-triple, and Brandon Dieter hit an RBI-single to put the Aggies up 7-3. Tabak drove-in a run with a single in the third to make the score 8-3. The Vaqueros got one back in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Fonteboa. In the seventh, however, the Aggies added four runs on a bases-loaded walk by Jimenez and a bases-clearing triple by Villareal to make the score 12-4. With two outs in the ninth, the Vaqueros strung together four-straight hits to score four runs. Fonteboa launched a two-run home run, sophomore Jacob Flores singled, junior DeAndre' Shelton hit an RBI-double, and freshman PSJA alum Jacob Sanchez hit an RBI-single. The Vaqueros (11-11) trailed 2-1 with one out in the eighth when Rojas launched an 0-2 pitch over the right-center field wall to tie the game. In a span of six games, the reigning Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week now has three solo home runs, a pair of two-run shots and a grand slam. Rojas is now two games with home runs away from tying the NCAA record of eight-straight games with a home run, accomplished twice, by Ryan Jackson (Duke) March 18-April 1, 1994 and Andy Bruce (Georgia Tech), March 2-10, 1991. The Vaqueros trailed 2-0 after six innings. Junior DeAndre' Shelton drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh to make the score 2-1. Senior Chase Bridges (1-1) retired the first six batters he faced. In the ninth, however, Jace Grady singled and Austin Bell hit a walk-off home run. Graduate student Max Balderrama Jr. started and allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out five 5.0 innings. Balderrama struck out the side in a perfect third. In the fourth, however, the Patriots (13-6) puts runners at second and third with one out, setting up a Bell RBI-single. The Patriots added a run in the sixth on an RBI-single by Andrew Benefield. During the next at-bat, though, junior Vela alum RJ Ochoa threw out Benefield trying to steal second base. Patriots starter Dominic Hamel pitched 6.0 scoreless innings, striking out nine while allowing three hits and one walk. Graduate student Jeff Otchere led the Vaqueros (9-10) with a career-high 15 points on a career-best 6-of-6 shooting and two blocks. Senior Javon Levi scored 12 points with four rebounds, six assists and two steals. Junior LaQuan Butler scored nine points. Senior Anthony Bratton and junior Ricky "Doc" Nelson each finished with seven points. After four seasons with the Vaqueros, Levi ranks as the program's all-time leader in steals (244) while ranking fourth in assists (599). He also ranks sixth in WAC history in steals and tied for fifth in assists. Wilfred Likayi led the Aggies (11-7) with 15 points. Donnie Tillman scored 12 points with five rebounds. Jabari Rice scored nine points with nine rebounds. Johnny McCants scored nine points with six rebounds. The Vaqueros got off to a good start, going up 2-0 on an Otchere dunk and 4-3 on a jumper by junior Marek Nelson. The Aggies scored the next nine points before sophomore Quinton Johnson II made a jumper and then Butler came up with a steal before hitting a layup to make the score 12-8. The Aggies responded by scoring the next eight points as part of a 14-2 run to go up 26-10. The Aggies led by as much as 17 in the first half, going up 32-15 with 5:09 remaining. The Vaqueros answered with a 9-0 run, capped by a Levi layup off a turnover to make the score 32-24, but the Aggies closed the half on a 7-0 run and then scored the first five points of the second half to take a 44-24 lead. The Vaqueros pulled to within 58-41 on a pair of Otchere dunks midway through the second half. The Aggies responded with an 8-0 run to take their largest lead at 66-41. The Vaqueros followed with a 16-7 run to make the score 73-57, but that's as close as they got.
GoUTRGV.com El Paso – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s soccer team defeated the New Mexico State Aggies 2-1 on Thursday at University Field, on UTEP’s campus, for its fourth win away from the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. After much of a quiet first half, the Vaqueros (5-3-2, 2-3-1 WAC) got the scoring started in the 44th minute as sophomore Anna Torslov picked up the loose ball and sprinted up the right side. Torslov then found freshman Mari Liis Lillemae in the box who then found freshman Anna Frida Groedem, who put her shot off the cross bar and into the goal giving UTRGV the 1-0 lead. New Mexico State (3-6, 3-3 WAC) put the pressure on the Vaqueros in the second half as Hannah Leitner got the equalizer in the 63rd minute. Later in the half, junior Emily Zapata took a free kick and snuck it past Makenna Gottschalk in the 72nd minute to give the Vaqueros the 2-1 lead. It is Zapata’s 21st goal of her career. Junior Maile Lunardi (5-3-2) made three saves on the night, including one late in the match to keep the lead. UTRGV outshot New Mexico State 13 to 9 and 8 to 4 on goal. UTRGV will be back in action on Saturday, March 11, when closes out its two-game series with New Mexico State in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Senior Javon Levi led the Vaqueros (9-9, 2-5 WAC) with 19 points, a season-high eight rebounds, seven assists and one steal. Senior Anthony Bratton scored nine points with nine rebounds. Montre' Gipson led the Texans (10-10, 5-7 WAC) with 24 points, seven rebounds, five assists and one steal. Konstantin Dotsenko scored 15 points. Freddy Hicks finished with 11 points. Levi opened up the game with a three and added a jumper a few minutes later to give the Vaqueros a 7-5 lead. A three by junior Marek Nelson broke a tie to put the Vaqueros up 10-7, but the Texans responded with an 11-2 run to take an 18-12 lead. Then, with the score 22-16, sophomore Connor Raines hit a three to spark a 7-0 run to put the Vaqueros on top. The Texans scored the next six points to regain the lead, but junior Uche Dibiamaka hit a jumper and then Levi nailed a three right before halftime to tie the game at 28. The game remained tight early in the second half. The Texans pushed their led to 40-33 at the 13:37 mark, but Levi responded with a jumper, a three and two free throws as part of a 9-0 run to give the Vaqueros a 42-40 lead. The Texans responded by scoring the next 13 points to regain the lead. Then, with the score 57-46, a Bratton layup and a Nelson dunk brought the Vaqueros to within seven. One basket later, sophomore Quinton Johnson II made a bucket to make the score 59-52, but that's as close as the Vaqueros got. UTRGV opens the Western Athletic Conference Tournament as the number six seed on Thursday at 10 p.m. at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. Fans in the United States can watch online via ESPN+. GoUTRGV.com STEPHENVILLE – Graduate student Amara Graham became the eighth player in program history to surpass 1,000-career points as The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s basketball team fell 63-52 to the Tarleton Texans on Saturday at Wisdom Gym. The Vaqueros (6-13, 2-8 WAC) have clinched the sixth seed in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament and will face the No. 3 Grand Canyon on Wednesday, March 10, at 10 p.m. at Orleans Arena. UTRGV was led by redshirt junior Burcu Soysal and sophomore Sara Bershers, who scored 10 points each. Graham and sophomore Jena’ Williams scored nine points each with Graham also grabbing nine rebounds with four assists. Tarleton (9-16, 4-10 WAC) got a game-high 20 points from Iyana Dorsey while Marissa Escamilla recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. UTRGV got out to the 3-0 lead early in the first quarter after a hook shot from Soysal. Tarleton answered with an 8-0 run to take the lead before a three-pointer from sophomore Tiffany McGarity stopped the run to make it 8-6. Later in the quarter Graham converted the three-point play to get the Vaqueros within 12-9 but the Texans took the 15-9 lead to end the quarter. The Vaqueros came out in the second quarter with an 8-0 run of their own, which featured Graham’s three-pointer that got her over the 1,000-career point mark, to take the 17-15 lead. The Texans put together another run as they scored seven straight points to regain the 22-17 lead as they took the 26-22 lead into halftime. After an bucket by the Texans to opening the second half, the Vaqueros went on a 6-0 run that was capped by a Graham layup to tie the game at 28-28. Later in the quarter, Tarleton went on a 6-0 run to get out to the 41-32 lead. Bershers knocked down a three-pointer and Soysal made a layup to get the Vaqueros within 43-42 within the opening minutes of the fourth. The Texans pushed their lead to 49-42 after a layup by Dorsey and then went on a 7-2 run to put game out of reach.
GoUTRGV.com STEPHENVILLE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s basketball team held on to win 62-56 over the Tarleton Texans in the series opener on Friday at Wisdom Gym. Graduate student Amara Graham led all scorers with 24 points, on 7-of-13 shooting, while grabbing six rebounds. Sophomore Sara Bershers added 12 points with nine reounds and five assists. Tarleton (8-16, 3-10 WAC) got a double-double from Marissa Escamilla as she scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebound while Iyana Dorsey also scored 22 points on 5-of-15 shooting. The Vaqueros (6-12, 2-7 WAC) jumped out the 5-1 lead after a jumper from Bershers. Later in the quarter, Graham knocked down a three-pointer and converted a fast break layup giving UTRGV the 12-8 lead. UTRGV opened up their lead in the second quarter as they outscored the Texans 16-5 for the 30-19 lead at the half. Senior Iva Belosevic opened the second half with a layup and Bershers followed with layup of her own as the Vaqueros took their biggest lead of the night at 34-19. The Vaqueros took a 47-36 lead into the fourth quarter before the Texans scored the first seven points to get within 47-43. Bershers answered with a jumper to push the lead back to 49-43 but the Texans put together another 5-0 run to get within one at 49-48 with 6:58 left to play. Both teams traded buckets as sophomore Sydney Cajero knocked down a jumper followed by a layup by Escamilla which was then followed by a layup by Graham. Later in the fourth, sophomore Tiffany McGarity hit a three-pointer to extend UTRGV’s lead to 56-51 with 3:47 left to play. UTRGV hit six free throws down the stretch to close out the game. The Vaqueros and Texans will close out the regular season on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Wisdom Gym.
