HP Umpire Mark Carlson ejected Blue Jays pitching coach Pete Walker after a ball three call to pitcher Jose Berrios vs White Sox batter Jake Lamb. Report:
In our haste to get our latest video out, we erred and stated that a balk should be called when a pitcher disengages while in the process of coming set. This is incorrect. A pitcher can legally disengage the rubber while moving his hands toward becoming set, but not yet getting there, as long as it's in a continuous motion (and not a start-stop movement). We apologize for any confusion. We promise to always strive to be perfect, no matter how unattainable that goal is. Like on the field, we want to be better than before and not repeat our mistakes. Thanks for your understanding and thoughtful discussion! -The CCS Team After Brian Knight exited Monday's Yankees-Royals after an early head injury, replacement HP Umpire Pat Hoberg ejected New York manager Aaron Boone for arguing a balk call against pitcher Jonathan Loaisiga. Report: https://www.closecallsports.com/2021/08/mlb-ejection-126-pat-hoberg-1-aaron.html Injury Scout: Brian Knight struck in jaw by pitched ball that bounced in the dirt: https://www.closecallsports.com/2021/08/injury-scout-pitch-bounces-into-brian.html It is a start-stop balk if the pitcher starts a motion, then stops, and then steps off. *Addendum, it is not a balk if the pitcher simply steps off prior to coming to Set Position, as long as it is in one continuous motion. It is, however, a balk if the pitcher makes any motion naturally associated with delivery or, informally known, commits a start-stop violation.
Reds player Joey Votto, ejected seven times since 2018, promised to "play the game respectfully" and refrain from "getting into tiffs with umpires" in a postgame message to the city. July 24th's White Sox-Brewers game encountered a lengthy delay when Chicago baserunner Yoan Moncada was called out, on appeal, for missing home plate in Milwaukee. Article: https://www.closecallsports.com/2021/07/chicago-milwaukees-10-minute-missed.html Chicago contended that Brewers Manager Craig Counsell's waited too long after the play to file a challenge on HP Umpire Jeremie Rehak's safe call and that crew chief Dan Iassogna thus entertained an untimely review. However, Chicago and the umpires may have been speaking two different languages, or at least referring to two separate rules for two separate plays. Chicago's allegation regarding a violation of the 20-second post-play time limit to review was based on the *initial play* at home plate, whereas the umpires allowance of Counsell's challenge was based on starting the 20-second clock only after Rehak ruled on Milwaukee's appeal attempt. MLB's Replay Review Regulations state that video reviews on whether a runner touched a base or not *require a defensive appeal prior to the Replay Review*—thus, it would be inappropriate to use the initial play as the point at which the 20-second clock starts for the appeal decision, as the appeal had not yet been made until well after the play ended, but before a pitch had been thrown to a subsequent batter and before Milwaukee made a play or attempted play. Because appeal plays are not Replay Reviews, they are not subject to MLB's 20-second rule and, instead, are allowed at any time after the play-to-be-appealed has concluded, but before the next pitch has been thrown or another play has been made or attempted. A team *IS* allowed to appeal, even if a mound visit or similar delay occurs between the end of the prior play and the appeal's execution. Finally, we recall that appeals at the professional baseball level must occur during live ball activity. Dead ball appeals might be allowed at lower levels (e.g., high school), but are not allowed in OBR. That said, the result of the play had the umpires instructed Milwaukee to re-do the appeal during live ball action would have been exactly the same: the Replay Official would have declared Moncada out for failing to touch home base.
When umpires denied Canada pitcher Danielle Lawrie's attempted re-entry into its Olympics matchup vs Japan during the 2020 Tokyo games, Canada responded by walking off the field in protest. Article: https://www.closecallsports.com/2021/07/canada-briefly-removes-team-from-field.html After a rules check using the WBSC Softball rulebook and conferring with tournament officials, umpires permitted Lawrie to re-enter the game and pitch in the 5th inning. Lawrie had initially appeared on Team Canada's lineup as a starting pitcher before being substituted for in the 1st inning before throwing a single pitch. WBSC Rule 3.2.3e allows starting players to re-enter the lineup once. Lawrie was Canada's Flex Player for the game while her 1st inning replacement, Sara Groenewegen, was the team's Designated Player.
HP Umpire Tom Hallion ejected White Sox pitching coach Ethan Katz after a ball four call during Chicago pitcher Ryan Burr's walk to Tigers batter Zack Short, which forced in a run. Report: https://www.closecallsports.com/2021/07/mlb-ejection-089-tom-hallion-2-ethan.html
2B Umpire/Crew Chief Dan Iassogna ejected Marlins pitcher Pablo Lopez, pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre, and manager Don Mattingly after Lopez hit Braves batter Ronald Acuña with the first pitch of Atlanta's 1st inning. Report: https://www.closecallsports.com/2021/07/mlb-ejections-085-87-dan-iassogna-2-4.html It would appear that broadcasters may not be aware of MLB's modification of the Intentionally Pitch at Batter protocol for umpires. Prior to the new protocol (which at this point isn't exactly "new" anymore, it existed last season as well), home plate umpires would decide whether to warn, eject, or do nothing on a potential throwing at/beanball incident immediately upon the batter being hit by the pitch or the pitch sailing past the batter. Under the new protocol, the plate umpire is no longer allowed to make any ruling on the spot and the crew must convene after a potential throwing-at incident and have a conference about whether to eject the pitcher, eject both the pitcher and manager, warn both teams, or do nothing. As we explain, this change in protocol has produced some unintended consequences that make managing the game more difficult.
