HIGHLIGHTS | Burnley vs Arsenal (0-1) | Premier League | Odegaard with a beautiful free-kick!
The left foot of Martin Odegaard made all the difference as we chalked up back-to-back 1-0 wins in the Premier League. On a hot and sunny afternoon at Turf Moor, the Norwegian midfielder sent a perfectly-placed free-kick beyond the grasp of Nick Pope to seal victory for Mikel Arteta's side. We started the faster of the two sides, with a dangerous low ball from Kieran Tierney threatening the Burnley goal as Nicolas Pepe forced Pope into action. The hosts threatened sparingly. Ben Mee headed over Aaron Ramsdale's goal from a corner, before Gudmundsson's strike was saved by our new stopper. Emile Smith Rowe threatened to score a second when he connected with Pepe's cut-back, but his curling effort whizzed narrowly over Pope's crossbar. The second half brought more opportunities for the Clarets than the first, with Ramsdale forced into action to deny a powerful strike from Maxwel Cornet after the Ivorian international stepped off the bench. Our goalkeeper was in the thick of the action again soon after, when he was adjudged to have tripped Matej Vydra in the box after a backpass from Ben White. However, a VAR review quickly corrected the situation - much to the relief of the travelling support - and no penalty was awarded. Dwight McNeil then drilled a low shot into the side-netting, while Vydra flicked a header just beyond the far post soon after. Frustration grew in the ground as Sean Dyche's side attempted to battle their way back into the game. Despite a late spell of pressure and a couple of forced nervy moments, our defence stood firm in the face of waves of Burnley attacks. Three fine goals from Emile Smith Rowe, Nicolas Pepe and Willian saw us claim a 3-1 victory against West Bromwich Albion on Sunday. After the disappointment of our European exit on Thursday night, Mikel Arteta’s side were expected to deliver a response here – and they did just that. But it took some time to get going, and in fact it was the visitors who twice went closest in the early stages through the dangerous Matheus Pereira. Gradually we began to assert our dominance, and when we upped the tempo the Baggies struggled to live with us – especially down our left flank, where Bukayo Saka took centre stage. The England international was playing out of position at left back – not that you’d have known it - and on the half-hour mark it was no surprise that our opening goal was created by him. After being played in by Willian following patient build-up play, Saka looked up and picked out the onrushing Smith Rowe, who had raced into the box and volleyed in on the run with his left foot. It was a lovely strike, but there was even better to follow just five minutes later. This time the goal stemmed from an attack up the right as Calum Chambers – enjoying another eye-catching display – fed Pepe, who cut inside and curled a sensational strike into the top-left hand corner. It was a high-class goal, and no more than our dominance deserved – and we had further chances to add to our advantage before the break through Gabriel Martinelli, Chambers and Saka. We continued to pile forward after the interval, with Pepe and Smith Rowe both testing Sam Johnstone early on, while a fine Saka cross not long afterwards just evaded Martinelli and Smith Rowe. But out of the blue, the Baggies pulled one back when Pereira raced at the heart of our defence and fired a low shot beyond Bernd Leno and into the far corner. The goal offered the visitors hope, and we had some nervy moments during the closing stages. We came from a goal behind to deservedly win a dramatic north London derby. It was no less than we deserved after a largely dominant performance, but we had to dig deep after Erik Lamela gave the visitors the lead. Martin Odegaard levelled up before the break and captain for the day Alexandre Lacazette scored the winner from the penalty spot. There were some late nervy moments - despite playing the last 15 minutes with an extra man after Lamela's red card - but we held on for a well-deserved confidence boosting win. There's no doubt we made most of the early running, and we certainly were looking positive in possession, trying to mov the ball forward through the organised Tottenham rearguard. Despite seeing plenty of the ball though, we didn't have a clear sight at goal until Emile Smith Rowe rattled the crossbar with a fine attempt from 20 yards. Hugo Lloris was well beaten in the visitors' goal, but the ball bounced away to safety. Smith Rowe was the architect of our next chance, cutting the ball back from the byline to the lurking Alexandre Lacazette, but the Frenchman screwed his shot wide from six yards after attempting to open up his body and shoot across goal. But our dominance began to fade and we were punished on the half hour. Lamela - an early replacement for Heung-Min Son - showed great technique to score inside the far post. The goal was very much against the run of play, but we kept pushing and hit the woodwork for a second time when Cedric latched onto a loose ball just inside the box and crashed his effort against the upright. We deserved to be on terms, and finally drew level late in the half through Odegaard. Kieran Tierney got away down the left, sent in a low cross which the Norwegian steered beyond Lloris via a deflection off Toby Alderweireld. It was his second goal in four days after opening his account in Greece on Thursday. It would have been an injustice to go in behind at the interval, and we continued to dictate the play early in the second half. Nicolas Pepe was introduced for Bukayo Saka at the break, and the Ivorian's wonderful pass to Lacazette inside the box resulted in a penalty. Lacazette failed to make good contact with his shot, but was cleaned out by Davinson Sanchez. Referee Michael Oliver pointed to the spot and Lacazette himself dispatched. Lamela saw red for an elbow on Tierney, but perversely the visitors improved after going down to ten men. Harry Kane headed home a free-kick but was flagged offside as Spurs piled on the late pressure. Kane then struck the post from a free-kick and Gabriel made a superb clearing header to keep out Sanchez's follow up strike.
