Three Things we learned | Post match Breakdown | Premier League ______________________ Brazilian forward Gabriel Martinelli’s double helped Arsenal ease to a dominant 4-1 win at Leeds United in the Premier League on Saturday. In the only Premier League game to go ahead on Saturday due to a huge rise in COVID-19 cases among players, Arsenal blew beleaguered Leeds away with a blistering first-half display. Having shipped seven goals at Manchester City in midweek, Leeds were repeatedly carved apart in the opening period, with Martinelli’s brace putting Arsenal 2-0 up inside 28 minutes. Frustrations were palpable all round Elland Road as Bukayo Saka added a third for Arsenal three minutes before the break, with the scoreline not at all flattering for the dominant London side. Leeds did threaten a late comeback when Rafinha converted a penalty 15 minutes from time, but substitute Emile Smith Rowe’s late goal put the game beyond the hosts. Arsenal’s third league success in a row consolidated fourth spot in the standings, while Leeds‘ second successive hammering left them down in 16th, five clear of the drop zone, but having played three more games than Burnley in 18th. “I am very happy with the performance, the week that we had, and the way we are moving forward,” Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta said. “It is always difficult to play against Leeds. They didn’t give up on the second half. I am pleased, it is not easy to play the way we did in this atmosphere. We made a real statement.” The visitors were well on top from the start against an injury-ravaged Leeds. Home goalkeeper Illan Meslier was forced into a fine save as the hosts’ defence still looked shell-shocked after their mauling at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday. Saka should have scored from the rebound, but Arsenal did not have to wait long for the opener as Martinelli, leading the line in place of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who was again left out for a disciplinary breach, arrowed a shot into the top corner. The Gunners continued to dominate, with Scotland full back Kieran Tierney forcing another fine save out of Meslier, before the hosts mustered their first attack as Rafinha fired wide. Martinelli, whose Arsenal career has been plagued by injury, made it two after brilliantly latching onto Granit Xhaka’s through pass and lofting the ball over Meslier. Saka’s goal had an element of fortune about it as a deflection took it past Meslier whose performance ensured it was only three at the break. Arsenal’s 11 shots on target in the first half is the most in the opening 45 minutes by any side in a single Premier League match since 2003-04, when Opta started collecting such stats. Leeds improved in the second half and deservedly got a lifeline when Ben White fouled Joe Gelhardt in the penalty area and Rafinha hammered in the spot-kick. Without injured striker Patrick Bamford, however, Leeds lacked the firepower to complete the turnaround and Smith Rowe’s calm finish ended their faint hopes. It was the first time Leeds have lost three successive league games under manager Marcelo Bielsa. “There were more chances generated than the goals that they scored,” Bielsa said. “When we lost the ball in our own half, this increased the amount of chances they (Arsenal) could create. “Always the support like the team received today is inspiring to us. It is not easy when a team has conceded 14 goals in three games. Virat Kohli’s side entered the match knowing the side needed three victories from their remaining matches to stand any chance of making the last four following back-to-back defeats. An excellent opening partnership of 140 between Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul laid the foundations and then Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya provided the late fireworks, adding 63 in just 21 balls to take India to 210 for two, the highest score of the tournament so far. Afghanistan’s attack badly missed the injured Mujeeb Ur Rahman and the loss of both openers inside four overs quickly left them playing catch-up in reply. Karim Janat (42 not out) and Mohammad Nabi (35) provided cameos but Mohammed Shami (three for 32) and the returning Ravi Ashwin (two for 14) helped India see out a comfortable and morale-boosting win. Having been restricted to 110 for seven by New Zealand on Sunday, India were eager for a strong start when inserted at the toss and their experienced openers provided it. Rohit ended the opening over in style, lofting Gulbadin Naib for four over mid-off, and Rahul provided his own statement of intent five balls later by smashing Sharafuddin Ashraf over long-on for the first six of the innings. Another followed in a costly fifth over, which ended with India on 52 without loss after Rohit cleared the ropes over long-off before driving through cover for four more. Afghanistan’s attack temporarily stemmed the tide as the opening pair rotated the strike, with no boundaries for 20 balls, but Rahul ended the mini drought and soon swept Rashid Khan behind square as the scoreboard continued to motor. Rohit won the race to his half century, getting there in 37 balls, and a savage pull for six by his partner brought up the pair’s fourth T20I century stand later in the 12th over. Rahul was raising his bat at the start of the 13th after reaching his half century in two fewer balls than Rohit, who took the attack to Rashid and slammed successive sixes shortly afterwards. Pant was promoted to number three to continue the attack and having survived reviews from consecutive Rashid deliveries, he made the most of his reprieves by carting Gulbadin for huge back-to-back maximums to hand India back their momentum after the seamer had cleaned up Rahul earlier in the over. Knowing he had to put his foot down from the outset, Hazratullah Zazai got the chase up and running by taking on India’s dangerous new ball pair, cutting Mohammed Shami for four before lofting Jasprit Bumrah over the deep mid-wicket boundary. Neither took long to hit back, however, as both openers fell in successive deliveries. Shami induced a leading edge to see the back of Mohammad Shahzad for a four-ball duck and when Zazai sliced to mid-on off Bumrah, Afghanistan were 13 for two. The incoming Rahmanullah Gurbaz was quickly into his stride, launching Shami for back-to-back sixes in a fifth over which cost 21 to breathe fresh life into the chase. Gulbadin followed up with twin boundaries off Pandya as Afghanistan ended the powerplay on 47 for two, just six runs adrift of where India had been at the same stage. The eight wickets in hand soon became seven as Rahmanullah went on the attack once more and was well held by Pandya inches inside the rope at long-on from the bowling of Ravi Jadeja. Then came a landmark moment for Jadeja’s fellow spinner Ashwin, who trapped a sweeping Gulbadin in front to claim his first T20I scalp since 2016 and leave Afghanistan 61 for four at the halfway stage of the reply. Jed Wallace, meanwhile, returned to the squad to take his place on the bench. The Lions began the game on the front foot and fashioned the first half-chance through the run of Scott Malone to the edge of the box, but his cross was knocked behind by the Bristol City defence. Two corner-kicks followed, but Daniel Bentley was able to grasp the latter out of the air and stop any potential effort on goal. Malone's determination down the left-hand side then allowed him to cross for the leap of Matt Smith, but his header went wide. Millwall were getting a lot of joy down that left side in the early stages, especially through the combination of Malone and Murray Wallace, but numerous crosses failed to be converted into clear-cut chances on goal. An enticing cross from George Saville followed George Evans' long-range attempt being closed down, but the slightest flick took the ball away from danger. Matty James then struck The Robins' first effort of the game, on the break, after 14 minutes, but his attempt rolled wide of Bartosz Bialkowski's near post. There was a hairy moment for Millwall with 16 minutes on the clock as Murray Wallace completely misjudged the bounce of a pass and allowed Andreas Weimann a run on goal, but the duo of Bialkowski and Daniel Ballard spared his blushes, racing back to deflect the shot behind. George Tanner then nodded wide from Jay Dasilva's cross as Bristol City began to get themselves more into the game, but the next chance went the way of Millwall, however, Malone put Evans' cross wide. A golden opportunity was then presented to Afobe with 32 minutes played, but after he sprung the offside trap and connected with Evans' lofted header, Bentley rushed out to save well. There was a minor shout for a Millwall penalty as the first-half began to reach its conclusion, but referee Dean Whitestone was unmoved, with another chance coming in stoppage-time as Afobe connected brilliantly with a cross, but his header was clawed away by Bentley. Chris Martin broke away with the ball at his feet for the visitors early in the second-half but was well marshalled away from danger by the defence, before the big moment came with 63 minutes on the clock as Saville's through-ball saw Afobe latch onto it, only to be brought down by Rob Atkinson. Jed Wallace, a 59th-minute substitute for Smith, stepped up to slam his penalty-kick home, sending Bentley the wrong way, to open the scoring. The Lions' number seven, Malone and Saville were involved in a neat move as the game moved into its last 15 minutes, but the final ball lacked, with the former having to withdraw with five minutes to play after taking a knock - Jake Cooper his replacement. With just two minutes remaining, Jed Wallace won the ball back and began an attack which ended with the ball at the feet of Saville inside the box - after the space to shoot reduced for the midfielder, he was able to feed substitute Billy Mitchell, only for his attempt to be stopped well by Bentley. Just as the clock ticked into four minutes of stoppage-time the ball dropped for Weimann inside the 18-yard area, but a clutch of Millwall bodies were able to throw themselves in front of the ball to stop what would have been the equaliser otherwise.
