Edge-of-the-seat goalfest ends in favour of Gokulam Kerala against TRAU FC
Gokulam Kerala FC extended their unbeaten run at the start of the Hero I-League 2021-22 campaign to five matches with a 3-2 win over Tiddim Road Athletic Union (TRAU FC) at the Kalyani Stadium on Monday. An early goal from Jithin MS, followed by a brace from Luka Majcen saw the Malabarians get the better of TRAU FC, who registered two goals thanks to a brace from Fernandinho. Defending champions Gokulam Kerala wasted no time in taking the game to their opponents, finding an early breakthrough in the 2nd minute of the contest. Jithin MS scored for the Malabarians for the third game running, as he made an undetected run into the TRAU FC box to get on the end of a cross from the left flank. TRAU goalkeeper Amrit Gope misjudged the flight of the ball and got stranded in no man’s land, leaving Jithin the easy task of directing the ball into the empty net. Despite trailing, TRAU FC didn’t lack for any attacking intent of their own, and levelled the contest through Brazilian import Fernandinho in the 8th minute. After Kishan Singh had his snapshot saved by Rakshit Dagar, Fernandinho slid in to poach the rebound and bring TRAU back on level terms. The parity was to last for a brief period of ten minutes only, as Gokulam Kerala’s talisman Luka Majcen put the defending champions in front once again in the 18th minute. Majcen rose highest in the box to meet a cross from the left flank and place his header back across goal, leaving keeper Amrit Gope no chance. Gokulam Kerala had a golden opportunity to extend their lead further in the 20th minute when in-form striker Majcen turned provider this time, playing a lofted through ball for Thahir Zaman. Zaman did well to bring down the ball with his first touch, but skied his finish well over the bar. Gokulam skipper Sharif Mohammad had a look at goal from a free kick in the 39th minute. Although the Afghan international struck the dead ball well, his shot didn’t dip enough in time to draw a save from Amrit Gope. An eventful first half ended with Gokulam narrowly leading the contest 2 – 1 at half time. Gokulam Kerala doubled their lead on the other side of the break in the 55th minute. After playing a short corner that failed to find its mark in the box, the partially cleared ball landed at the feet of Luka Majcen. The Slovenian didn’t need a second invitation to grab the chance with both hands, unleashing a first time finish on the volley that rifled into the roof of the net. With the chips down, TRAU FC showed their fighting spirit once again with an instant response in the 56th minute. Fernando set out on a mazy dribble on the edge of the Gokulam box and bamboozled the defence to come onto his left foot and send a low drive into the far corner, thereby matching Luka Majcen for a brace each. With the final half an hour promising a nervy showdown, TRAU FC tried to pile the pressure on the defending champions and force an equaliser. TRAU’s best chance came in the dying moments of the game as they committed more and more bodies in attack. With the Gokulam penalty area extremely crowded, a looping cross was met with a towering header at the back post by Akobir Turaev, but his effort was matched with a fantastic save by Rakshit Dagar on the goal line. Rangers 1-0 Aberdeen - Gers Fans Unveil Spectacular Ibrox Display For 150th Anniversary Celebrations
RANGERS 1 - 0 ABERDEEN RANGERS fans today unveiled a spectacular display at Ibrox as part of the 150th anniversary celebrations. Supporters turned the stadium red white and blue with coloured ponchos for every area inside Ibrox. And before kick-off a number of banners were lofted in the stands by fans. The display included highlights from the 150-year history of the club up to and including the title win last season. The iconic team photograph of the Gallant Pioneers was also given the banner treatment as black-and-white displays showcased early highlights for the Ibrox club. Chelsea struggled to show clarity in the attacking third against Crystal Palace, but a late strike from Hakim Ziyech secured victory as Thomas Tuchel’s men prevailed 1-0. For Palace, this result means they have now lost their last three games at Selhurst Park. Chelsea dominated possession in the first half and looked in control of the contest, but they failed to muster any dangerous chances despite having the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech leading the attacking line. Crystal Palace decided to sit back and play on the counter, often trying to limit the ‘Blues’ while rarely risking any forays forward. The first half was hardly captivating, but the ‘Eagles’ ended up having the best chance of the period as the HT whistle approached. Wilfried Zaha was played through to face Édouard Mendy one-on-one, albeit from a tight angle, but his effort went wide with the Senegalese goalkeeper beaten. The opening half ended with the scores level, with Chelsea seemingly the most likely to break the deadlock. Crystal Palace were forced to make an HT substitution due to the injury of their starting goalkeeper, Vicente Guaita, with Jack Butland the man coming in to take his place. Things didn’t change much in the second half, with neither side able to create anything even remotely dangerous midway through the second half. Palace managed to even things up in terms of possession, though, and also contained Chelsea’s attacking power effectively. The visitors thought they had broken the deadlock in the 75th minute through Ziyech, but the goal was ruled out after VAR showed Lukaku to be offside in the build-up. Ziyech was arguably Chelsea’s most dangerous player throughout, and it was he who scored the winner late on, getting on the end of a deep Marcos Alonso cross to slot beyond Butland. The three points are vital for Thomas Tuchel and Co as they look to consolidate a place in the top four, but Palace will be gutted to concede so late on against the FIFA Club World Cup champions. #Millwall vs #westbromwichalbion full time #Matchreport Millwall recorded a 2-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion in the Sky Bet Championship at The Den on Saturday afternoon. Mason Bennett opened the scoring after 67 minutes with a finish from an acute angle, before Benik Afobe doubled the lead with a classy strike just nine minutes later. Gary Rowett made one change for the visit of The Baggies, as Oliver Burke came in for his home debut at the expense of George Evans, who dropped to the bench. The visitors started the afternoon on top and almost scrambled home the opening goal with just four minutes on the clock, but after a corner-kick failed to be clear, Bartosz Bialkowski managed to clutch the ball in amongst a batch of flying boots inside the six-yard box. Bialkowski then had to pull of an outstanding save from Baggies new boy Andy Carroll just a minute later, as the Pole got down quickly and well to parry the attacker's strike away from goal. Sloppy possession then led to Karlan Grant shaping to shoot, but his effort sailed over. After all four sides of the ground rose to their feet in memory of Isla Caton, Albion continued their charge on The Lions' penalty area, with Darnell Furlong's cross going across the face of goal without any telling touch, before Carroll fouled Danny McNamara on the far side to relieve the pressure. At the other end, Millwall's first chance of the game came on 12 minutes, but after patient build-up play saw McNamara cross to the back post, Scott Malone ballooned an effort over. McNamara's half-chance then went wide of the far post six minutes later, before the biggest chance to date went begging just after the midway point, as Benik Afobe was just unable to reach McNamara's cross, fashioned from Burke's smart pass on the halfway line. There were just over 30 minutes elapsed when determination from Bennett saw the ball deflect into the path of Afobe, but the striker could not control in what would have left him in a one-on-one situation with David Button, allowing the Albion defence to clear. Millwall had the first chance of the second-half, but after Burke's header set-up Afobe for a chance on goal, he sliced his effort over the crossbar. Burke then beat his man and looked set to score before a top save from Button kept Albion's sheet clean, before the loanee had another chance to open the scoring as he took down Malone's long pass, but his first touch took him away from goal. The opportunities kept coming for Millwall, with Maikel Kieftenbeld threading a pass through to Bennett with 56 minutes on the clock, but the close attentions of Cedric Kipre were enough to ensure that the frontman's effort failed to trouble Button. Shortly before the hour-mark, West Brom substitute Callum Robinson nearly made an instant impact as his deflected effort had to be tipped behind by Bialkowski, but with 67 minutes played, the deadlock was broken - by Millwall. As a Malone free-kick was sent in, the ball bobbled around, hitting the head of two, before dropping to Bennett at the far post, who made no mistake in firing home, despite the attempts to clear on the line. Nine minutes later, it was two - as Afobe chased down a lofted ball, he beat his marker before checking back onto his left foot and striking a stylish effort past Button to double the advantage. Afobe almost had a chance to notch a second - and Millwall's third - but his touch let him down as he sprung past the last line of The Baggies' defence, with The Lions seeing out the remainder of the game in no real trouble of conceding.
