7 takeaways from Packers' 35-17 win over Lions The Green Bay Packers rebounded from a disappointing season-opening loss with a primetime win over the Detroit Lions on Monday night at Lambeau Field. Playmakers power offensive revival Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said “it all starts” on offense with getting the ball to Aaron Jones and Davante Adams. Mission accomplished on Monday night. Jones and Adams got the ball 31 times and produced 236 of the Packers’ 323 total yards, and Jones scored four touchdowns. Early on, the Packers force-fed the ball to Jones, both as a runner and receiver. It was necessary work against another defense committed to playing two deep safeties. The second half belonged to Adams, who took apart the Lions’ overmatched secondary piece by piece, especially once rookie Ifeatu Melifonwu exited the game. 2. Eric Stokes states his case The Packers got rookie cornerback Eric Stokes on the field more in Week 2 by replacing Chandon Sullivan with Kevin King in the slot. The first-round pick responded with two pass breakups on fourth down, including a pivotal coverage stop on Quintez Cephus after the Packers went up 21-17 in the third quarter. Stokes was far from perfect but he consistently competed hard, displayed his elite makeup speed and disrupted receivers both at the line and the catch point. More snaps and experience will only make him better. Stokes only played eight snaps in the opener but it will be impossible for the Packers to keep him off the field now. 3. The defense is still a major question mark Five consecutive stops to end the game eased the pain of the first two quarters for the Packers defense, but this group still has major question marks. Jared Goff was red-hot in the first half (13 of 16, 137 yards, two touchdowns) but he just didn’t have the receiving talent around him to keep it going for 60 minutes. Better offenses will. And the Lions really only fell apart on offense after the Packers offense came alive and the rain started at Lambeau Field. Goff had two bad turnovers, and two other Lions drives were stopped on fourth down in the scoring area. Overall, the Packers have allowed seven touchdown passes to Goff and Jameis Winston in two games. Sunday was a glorious football Sunday. We got to watch our NFC South rivals in a week where the Bucs already had a victory under their belt. The Carolina Panthers played the New York Jets. While Carolina won and had a decent showing, it's still to be determined whether that was because Carolina is okay or the Jets just suck. Our bets are on the latter. The Philadelphia Eagles absolutely stomped the Atlanta Falcons. It appears the Falcons offensive and defensive lines are as weak as they have been for the last five years. And of course the talk of the league is Jameis Winston's performance with the Saints. Jameis threw for five touchdowns and 146 yards. If that doesn't scream that something's amiss, I don't know what does. Time will tell whether Jameis is new-and-improved under Sean Payton's system, but our guess is the Green Bay Packers have given up on the season.
