The fight began with a bang, as Magsayo landed a powerful right just 26 seconds into the match, with Vargas responding with rights of his own. Vargas capitalized on his 5-foot-10½ frame by maintaining distance, which worked to his advantage against Magsayo, who stands at 5-foot-6. Magsayo occasionally lunged forward in an attempt to land significant shots, but Vargas effectively timed his opponent's advances. Through the first four rounds, Vargas managed to land 18 body shots compared to Magsayo's eight. Although Magsayo had his moments, such as a well-placed counter left hook, it seemed that Vargas controlled both the round and the fight with his reach. Magsayo's energy appeared to wane in the sixth round, which Vargas used to his advantage. He relentlessly attacked Magsayo's body with punishing left hooks, causing Magsayo's right arm to drop. In the seventh round, Vargas suffered a cut above his left eyebrow due to a clash of heads. As the eighth round came to a close, Magsayo connected with a solid straight right, prompting his Hall of Fame trainer, Freddie Roach, to encourage him to be more aggressive. In the ninth round, Magsayo closed the distance for the first time, ultimately landing a left to Vargas' body and a crunching short right to his chin, resulting in Vargas being knocked down for the fourth time in his career. Vargas admitted, "It wasn't that effective, but it counts, he did get me there." Magsayo, overflowing with confidence, pressed the attack in the final seconds of the ninth round. Vargas, although getting up from the knockdown, was forced to clinch and move in order to survive the round. During the break between rounds, Beristain cautioned him about Magsayo's inside game. However, in the 10th round, Vargas didn't seem to have fully recovered, and Magsayo failed to capitalize. By the championship rounds, Vargas had regained his composure, while Magsayo needed a knockout to secure a victory. Vargas returned to using his height advantage, maintaining a comfortable distance with his jab and countering Magsayo with sharp left hooks. Magsayo, acknowledging his effort, said, "It's this today, no matter what, I'll come back stronger. I'm disappointed, but I did my best." He reflected on his strategy, mentioning, "When I had him down, the punch was straight, he did his job in the ring, running. I applied the pressure we trained in the gym, but he was taller, and he's the man today. I will rest, watch the fight, and train to fight again, correcting my mistakes for the next time." As for Vargas, he's already eyeing the next big challenge. He stated, "I was in control of the entire fight, except for the ninth when I lost a little control. Now I want the unification bout.
