Racism row: Gareth Southgate praises 'maturity' of England players
Gareth Southgate (right) has hailed England stars Raheem Sterling (left) and Jude Bellingham (inset) for their maturity after the pair faced racist chanting from Hungary fans in Thursday's World Cup qualifier. Sterling, who scored the opening goal in a 4-0 victory for the Three Lions, endured the abuse after celebrating in front of a section of the Budapest crowd, while midfielder Bellingham - an unused substitute in the game - was the subject of monkey noises from those supporters while he was warming up on the touchline. FIFA have opened up disciplinary proceedings concerning the incidents in the Hungarian capital, but as England's attention turns towards a second qualifier with Andorra at Wembley on Sunday, Three Lions boss Southgate praised Sterling, Bellingham and the rest of his squad for their reactions. UEFA to investigate alleged racism and homophobia incidents at Hungary games UEFA have appointed an inspector to investigate alleged abuse which took place during Hungary's matches against both France and Portugal. The game against France, which finished 1-1 with Attila Fiola and Antoine Griezmann getting the goals, took place in Budapest on Saturday afternoon, with Kylian Mbappe alleged to have been racially abused during the Euro 2020 fixture. As reported by De Telegraaf, during the 90 minutes some of the Hungarian fans in attendance aimed racist abuse at Mbappe. Monkey noises are said to have been heard around the stadium with Karim Benzema - who has Algerian roots - also subject to the vile treatment. In Hungary's previous Euro group match against Portugal, Cristiano Ronaldo was subjected to homophobic abuse, with several images of homemade discriminatory banners circulated on social media. Meanwhile, one right-wing supporters group also organised a march against players taking the knee before kick off. UEFA have now released a statement which reads: "In accordance with Article 31(4) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations, an UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been appointed to conduct a disciplinary investigation regarding potential discriminatory incidents which occurred in the Puskás Aréna, Budapest, during the 2020 European Championship group stage matches between the national teams of Hungary and Portugal on 15 June 2021 and between the national teams of Hungary and France played on 19 June 2021. "Information on this matter will be made available in due course." Hungary is the only host nation in which full crowds are allowed thanks to the country's lax social distancing rules. However, in both of the games played in the capital city so far there has been crowd trouble. Hungary's performances on the pitch have been overshadowed by some of their fans' behaviour This is not the first time Hungary's fans have been accused of discriminatory behaviour. Back in 2015 the country's football federation was hit with a €70,000 (£60,000) for a similar incident during a game against Romania. Hungary's final group game of the tournament will be played in Munich on Wednesday. The city council hope to light up the Allianz Arena in the pride rainbow to show solidarity with the country's LGBTQI+ community. Arsenal endured a nervous night as they lost 1-0 to Greek side Olympiakos on Thursday but still progressed into the Europa League quarterfinals 3-2 on aggregate. After a 3-1 victory in Athens last week and reaching halftime unscathed in the return, Arsenal looked comfortable. But when Youssef El Arabi's deflected shot left Bernd Leno wrong-footed early in the second half it gave the visitors hope and increased the tension among the home ranks. Arsenal wasted several late chances to ease the jitters with captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, restored to the starting line-up being left out of Sunday's north London derby for disciplinary reasons, guilty of a poor miss. Olympiakos had Ousseynou Ba sent off late on and Arsenal were spared any late dramas as they avenged last season's elimination by the Greek champions to take their place in Friday's last-eight draw. Olympiakos will take pride from a third successive away win against Arsenal but the damage was done in the first leg when they conceded two late goals having equalised. Arsenal were comfortable until a loose ball by Dani Ceballos led to El-Arabi's goal which gave the visitors hope. As Olympiakos pushed forward they allowed gaps at the back and Arsenal should have capitalised with substitute Martin Odegaard firing over and Nicolas Pepe having a goalbound effort deflected away while Aubameyang could have had a hat-trick. Arsenal have now made it to the quarterfinals for the fourth time in their last five Europa League/UEFA Cup campaigns. Speaking to BT Sport after the match, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta admitted his side could have played better on the night. "Really happy to be through. We had a tough opponent, so happy to be through. Sometimes we have to be fair with ourselves -- we were nowhere near the levels we could be," Arteta said. "We were unstable with the ball and we gave it away. It's impossible when you give the ball away to have any structure. We created enough chances to win but were nowhere near the levels in which we can perform. "We can't use any excuses. We had fresh players in the side. We started the game really well but then we had a lack of stability. We need to keep the ball and play some passes together and not just keep giving the ball away in transitions. "When we conceded, we did get better and got more control but with their goal, we gave them some belief, which you cannot give to the opponent. We'll get better. When it comes to decision-making and execution, it's a little bit more difficult. "We need another win in the Premier League and it's a big chance after the international break to get a run together."
