UTRGV Women's Basketball Rides Second Half Surge to Win Over Seattle U
GoUTRGV.com Feb. 10, 2022 – RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team came back from a 12-point halftime deficit to beat the Seattle U Redhawks 68-60 on Thursday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Sophomore Sara Bershers led the Vaqueros (10-14, 6-6 WAC) with 20 points while hitting four 3-pointers to go with five rebounds, a season-high tying four assists and two blocks. Graduate student Taylor Muff scored 17 points. Freshman KaCee Kyle scored a career-high tying 14 points with five rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Halie Jones scored 15 points with a season-high tying eight rebounds, four assists and a career-high five steals. Bree Calhoun led the Redhawks (7-16, 2-10 WAC) with 14 points and five assists. Irene Korolenko scored 13 points. Georgia Kehoe finished with 11 points with five rebounds. After being outscored 31-19 and going 1-for-14 from behind the arc in the first half, the Vaqueros outscored the Redhawks 49-29 while going 9-for-18 from downtown in the second half. Bershers opened the third quarter with a 3 and Muff followed with a jumper. Then, with the Vaqueros down 38-27, Kyle hit back-to-back 3-pointers to bring the Vaqueros within five. The Vaqueros trailed 43-35 when Bershers hit four-straight baskets, including a trio of 3-pointers, to give the Vaqueros their first lead, 46-43, early in the fourth quarter. The Vaqueros and Redhawks traded baskets for a few minutes. Then, with the Redhawks up 55-52, sophomore Tiffany McGarity made a layup to spark a 7-0 run to give the Vaqueros the lead for good. Then, with the score 61-60, Muff banked in a three to put the game on ice. The Redhawks jumped out to an 8-2 lead before Muff hit a pair of free throws and the Vaqueros and Redhawks started trading baskets for the rest of the quarter. Kyle hit a three and Muff had a board and a bucket to start the second quarter, bringing the Vaqueros to within 14-13. After a pair of Redhawks baskets, Muff and Jones hit jumpers to bring the Vaqueros within 18-17. The Redhawks responded by scoring the next nine points as part of a 13-2 run over final 4:22 to take a 31-19 halftime lead. UTRGV hosts defending Western Athletic Conference Champion California Baptist on Saturday at 12 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at UTRGVTickets.com. In this episode, @KellyInPhoenix and I talk how the LA Rams best her Arizona Cardinals 34-11 in Monday's Super WildCard meeting. Going into Monday's game, Kelly felt confident her Cardinals could replicate their Week road win over the Rams. This was one of Arizona's NFL-high eight road wins. In both meetings, the Cards won in LA while LA won in Glendale. Kelly felt frustrated and a little disappointed how the Cards played after starting off the 2021 season well. She also explains how the Cards lack of playoff experience hurt Arizona. Arizona quarterback Kyler Murray looked shaky in playoff debut - completing 19-of-34 passes for 134 yards and two interceptions; one was retuned for a #PickSix. I bring up how several stars and legends including Peyton Manning, Lamar Jackson, and Josh Allen struggled in their playoff debuts. Despite a bad playoff game, we both have faith and would give Kyler a monster extension as leader for the next decade or so. We also look at Arizona's defensive strategy in doubling star slot receiver Cooper Kupp. With Kupp seeing multiple defenders, Odell Beckham made multiple big catches and one big throw. We then debate Arizona's coaching game plan. Kelly was mad Arizona did not push for more points going into halftime. We also debate Kliff Kingsbury's performance in his NFL playoff coaching debate. We also discuss whether injured DeAndre Hopkins would have made a difference in Monday's loss to the Rams. With Arizona's season over, we talk what positions the Cards should address in free agency and the NFL Draft. With Kyler not tall, I figure he needs a strong offensive line like Saints legend Drew Brees received for 15 seasons in New Orleans. Secondary could be another key area for the Cardinals to address. Kelly is intrigued how Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow and Bills star Josh Allen play in the Divisional Round.

New Orleans Saints Miss Playoffs But Affirm Bright Future With Convincing Win
The New Orleans Saints might not be postseason bound, but they did enough in Atlanta to handle their business and remind their players, future players, and others paying attention of their competitive spirit and winning culture. Between loosing Drew Brees, chopping down the salary cap, replacing players at just about every position, a record-breaking 58 unique starters, Hurricane Ida, and COVID outbreaks, the New Orleans Saints went through the ringer. But whether it was Jameis Winston, Taysom Hill, Tevor Siemian, or Ian Book under center, Sean Payton was prepared and ready to compete - a clear Coach of the Year candidate. Cam Jordan, Kwon Alexander, Alvin Kamara, and Marcus Davenport - among others - all had standout performances in the Saints' 30-20 victory over the rival Atlanta Falcons. Although the Los Angeles Rams couldn't hold up their end of the bargain and the Saints will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2017, New Orleans needs not be pitied. As the team proved itself to be one of the most competitive and resilient rosters in the NFL. Offseason storylines are on the way. Will Dennis Allen be the Saints defensive coordinator?
