AFC Cup: Gokulam Kerala vs Mohun Bagan 4 - 2 Riding high on their successive I-League triumph, Gokulam Kerala FC stunned ATK Mohun Bagan 4-2 in a six-goal thriller in their AFC Cup debut at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Wednesday. In a battle between the two heavyweights of the top-tier ISL and the second-tier I-League, Gokulam Kerala dished out a much more compact and technical display than Bagan. Fresh from winning an unprecedented I-League double at the same venue last Saturday, Gokulam Kerala led the way with their Slovenian centre-forward Luka Majcen (50', 65') striking a brace. Rishad Puthanveettil (57') and substitute Jithin Subran (89') slammed one each to seal three points and give a reality check to the ISL giants and the local favourites. Mohun Bagan showed some spark with goals from Pritam Kotal (53') and Liston Colaco (80'), but their defence, in the absence of Sandesh Jhingan and Tiri, who was stretchered out after sustaining an injury in the 40th minute, crumbled in the second-half. The win also gave the Malabarians an early advantage in securing the only available berth from group D for the AFC Cup Inter-Zone semi-finals. Playing in front of a strong home support, ATK Mohun Bagan squandered many chances in a dominating first half. Fijian star centre-forward Roy Krishna missed back-to-back opportunities in the 18th minute -- first a one-on-one from Liston Colaco's cross and then from Joni Kauko's assist, when the ball came off the inside of the post. In the 29th minute, Kauko had a shot at the target from inside the box but the Finnish midfielder hit straight to Rakshit Dagar, as Gokulam Kerala had anxious few moments to begin with. The two-time reigning I-League champions were cautious to start with in their maiden appearance in the continental showpiece, resulting in a goalless first half. For the Mariners, who made an inter-zonal semifinal exit in the last edition, those were the few chances they had as the tables turned after the break. The Vincento Alberto Annese-coached side struck thrice in the space of 11 minutes to virtually close out the game. Gokulam's in-form Majcen, who was the team's top-scorer (13 goals) in the I-League, led its second-half domination to force Mohun Bagan defence into submission. It was Emil Benny who initiated the move from outside the box to pass it on to Thahir Zaman on the right, setting it up for Majcen's strong finish. In an action-packed second half, Mohun Bagan took just three minutes to equalise when Colaco's corner found Kotal right in front of the goal. Four minutes later, their I-League final hero Rishad slotted into the left-bottom corner from a brilliant counterattack. Majcen completed his double after Jourdain Fletcher won the ball from substitute Ashutosh Mehta to give a through ball to the Slovenian, who capitalised to make it 3-1. Colaco reduced the margin with a stunning freekick to give the crowd a ray of hope, but Jithin came off the bench to score from a delightful one-two with Majcen to seal the issue in Gokulam's favour.

A penalty save from captain and goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, and Rahul Bheke’s first international goal couldn’t prevent Bahrain beating India 2-1 in an international friendly played at the Sh. Ali Bin Mohamed Stadium in Manama City on Wednesday, 23 March 2022. Goals from Mohqmed Hardan and Mahdi Humaidan in either half sealed it for Bahrain, even as Bheke’s powerful header – his first international goal - had helped India restore parity in the 56th minute. The match saw 5 players making their international debuts. While Head Coach Igor Stimac named VP Suhair and Danish Farooq in the starting line-up, Naorem Roshan Singh, Aniket Jadhav and Anwar Ali came on as second-half substitutes. Earlier in the first-half, a dominant Bahrain were almost off to a perfect start as they earned a penalty in the 6th minute when Mohamed Marhoon’s shot hit Sandesh Jhingan’s hand at the edge of the 18-yard box. But goalkeeper and captain Gurpreet Singh Sandhu anticipated correctly, diving down to his left to palm off Mahdi Humaidan’s penalty. India tried to regroup and in the 10th minute, Liston Colaco intercepted the ball in the midfield and tried to run between his two markers. But the rival midfield was quick to react, and thwart him. Six minutes later, the Bahrain forward line, playing it quick among themselves, broke free but Mahroon’s shot crashed off the bar. The rebound did fall to an unmarked Humaidan but in his haste, he smashed it over. India had their first shot a few minutes later as Manvir Singh did meet Rahim Ali’s cross but the former’s header was off target. India earned their first corner in the 29th minute when Liston, taking down a long ball from Sandesh, sped down the left flank past his marker only for the rival defence to intercept his cross, and clear it for a corner. Two minutes later, Rahim Ali was brought down as India earned a free-kick in the rival half. But both the chances weren’t able to create any impact. The Blue Tigers survived a scare in the 35th minute when Marhoon squared it to Humaidan, who laid it for Komail Alaswad who failed to hit the target. The miss didn’t prove too costly for Bahrain as they surged into the lead the very next minute. Mahroon took his time and floated it into the box for Mohqmed Hardan to volley it in, as the hosts headed into the interval with a solitary goal lead. Changing over, Stimac brought in debutant Roshan Singh in place of Liston Colaco, and he almost scored with his first touch in international football as he tried to meet Rahim’s cross on the half-volley. The second substitution came in the 56th minute – Anirudh Thapa replacing Suhair. India earned a corner almost immediately, and it brought their equaliser. The corner was played short, and Roshan floated it viciously behind the rival defence and the goalkeeper for Rahul Bheke to head home powerfully – his first goal in international football. With India having started off the blocks faster in the second-half, Bahrain in their attempt to pull it back played an aerial ball to Humaidan inside the box. But even as he tried to meet it, the ball stayed out of his reach. A double substitution came in the 79th minute – Yasir Mohammad, and Aniket Jadhav coming in for Danish and Rahim respectively. The match-winner came as late as the 88th minute -- Humaidan making amends for his penalty miss to win it for Bahrain when he ran onto a cross from the right to put it in. India next play Belarus in another international friendly on March 26. INDIA: Gurpreet Singh Sandhu (captain); Pritam Kotal (Anwar Ali – 90+3 – international debut), Rahul Bheke, Sandesh Jhingan, Subhasish Bose; Manvir Singh, Danish Farooq (international debut) (Yasir Mohammad – 79th), Pronay Halder, VP Suhair (international debut) (Anirudh Thapa – 56th), Liston Colaco (Roshan Singh – 46th – international debut), Rahim Ali (Aniket Jadhav – 79th). cc - AIFF MEDIA Video cc - Bharain tv
ATK Mohun Bagan moved to the top of the table and Kerala Blasters FC entered the top-four after the two sides played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in the 2021-22 Hero Indian Super League at the Tilak Maidan Stadium on Saturday. Adrian Luna (7', 64') opened the scoring for Kerala before David Williams (8') drew level inside one minute. In the second half, Luna scored his second and handed Kerala the lead back but in stoppage time Joni Kauko (90+7') made it 2-2 to break Kerala hearts. The result means Kerala now have 27 points from 16 games and sit in fourth place while ATK Mohun Bagan moved to the top of the table for the time being with 30 points from 16 outings. The game was off to a frantic start as both teams scored in the space of one minute. Kerala took the lead inside the first eight minutes, Luna curling in a sumptous free kick up and over the wall and into the left corner leaving Amrinder Singh stranded in ATKMB goal. One minute later, ATKMB equalised. Pritam Kotal sent in a low cross first time for Williams to thump home on the run. Both teams settled down a bit after the high-tempo start before Liston Colaco's effort was palmed away by Prabhsukhan Gill and Lalthathanga Khawlhring's rasping left-footer was tipped onto the crossbar by Amrinder for a corner. Alvaro Vazquez also saw his first-time attempt sail over the woodwork after Jorge Diaz did well to set up his teammate. At halftime, both teams were level at 1-1. At the start of the second half, ATKMB head coach Juan Ferrando replaced goalscorer Williams with Hugo Boumous and the Frenchman did have an impact, controlling play in the middle of the park and drawing fouls in important areas of the pitch. But it was Kerala who took the lead for the second time in the match. Luna scored a peach of a goal after Khawlhring got the ball on the edge of the box and chipped it to Luna who chested it down, cut in and slammed the ball into the top corner. Both teams traded punches till the last minute with substitute Kiyan Nasiri getting a golden opportunity to draw level but for a brilliant block. From the resultant corner, Sandesh Jhingan's header was tipped over the bar. Prabir Das was sent off moments later for a rash challenged on Luna as the game reached feverpitch before Kauko made it 2-2 from a Boumous pass inside the box, the Finland international letting fly a powerful shot past Gill and into the goal. Diaz was also shown a red card when he was on the bench for dissent. #HeroISL #LetsFootball #IndianSuperLeague 🔊 LIKE ➡ SHARE ➡ SUBSCRIBE For More Updates: English: https://newsable.asianetnews.com/ Hindi: https://hindi.asianetnews.com/ Malayalam: https://www.asianetnews.com/ Kannada: https://kannada.asianetnews.com/ Tamil: https://tamil.asianetnews.com/ Telugu: https://telugu.asianetnews.com/ Bengali: https://bangla.asianetnews.com/ Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AsianetNewsa... Heavyweights Mumbai City FC and ATK Mohun Bagan displayed their full repertoire but were left high and dry in the end with a 1-1 draw in the Hero Indian Super League at the PJN Stadium in Fatorda here on Thursday. David Williams opened the scoring for ATKMB in the ninth minute but an own goal from Pritam Kotal in the 24th minute restored parity for Mumbai. Both teams had their fair share of chances in each half but could not produce a winner. The result means ATKMB could not break into the top-four, remaining fifth with 20 points from 12 games. Mumbai's winless run stretched to seven games as the reigning champions remained sixth in the table with 19 points from 13 outings. ATKMB looked in control from the off and it did not take them long to nose ahead. The brilliant Liston Colaco was hacked down on the left channel but despite green and maroon shirts' loud appeal, the referee did not give a free-kick. Mourtada Fall then passed the ball to Ahmed Jahouh who dilly-dallied with Hugo Boumous pressing him hard. Williams latched on to the loose ball, skipped past the keeper and put it past him. Colaco proved to be a menace for the Mumbai City FC defence as he made constant forays and looked threatening every time he bombed forward. ATKMB kept knocking on the door as Colaco found the wall thrice to underline his dominance. Mumbai tried hard to wrestle back the advantage and saw the ball for a brief period in which Cassio Gabriel's attempt was thwarted by Tiri but Kotal failed to keep out a Bipin Singh cross, deflecting the ball into his own net. After the cooling break, Williams had a chance to double his tally but his sharp header from a Liston Colaco free-kick that fell to him after hitting the wall came off the woodwork. Mohamad Nawaz then had a moment to forget when he charged out of his area in an attempt to head the ball clear but could only manage to send it as far as Boumous but the Frenchman was closed down by blue shirts. In the second half, Mumbai took off Diego Mauricio who had a forgettable debut for the Islanders for Igor Angulo. Soon after, Boumous shot wide after Manvir Singh sent in a low cross from the right and Williams sold a cute dummy. At the other side, Angulo headed wide from Jahouh's cross. At the hour mark, Mumbai's new signing Lallianzuala Chhangte came in for Vikram Pratap Singh and was in the thick of things almost immediately as he flicked on a ball from Gabriel into the path of Angulo but his header was saved well by Amrinder Singh. Kiyan Nassiri, who scored a breathtaking hattrick coming off the bench against SC East Bengal in the Kolkata Derby the other day, replaced Asutosh Mehta in the 85th minute as both sides looked for the winner. #HeroISL #LetsFootball #IndianSuperLeague 🔊 LIKE ➡ SHARE ➡ SUBSCRIBE For More Updates: English: https://newsable.asianetnews.com/ Hindi: https://hindi.asianetnews.com/ Malayalam: https://www.asianetnews.com/ Kannada: https://kannada.asianetnews.com/ Tamil: https://tamil.asianetnews.com/ Telugu: https://telugu.asianetnews.com/ Bengali: https://bangla.asianetnews.com/ Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AsianetNewsa...
