Bereits nach 15 Sekunden hatte Maximilian Mittelstädt die erste Abschlussmöglichkeit. Auch Leon Goretzka kam nach rund einer Minute frei am Sechzehner zum Abschluss, verzog aber knapp. Angeführt von den beiden Bayern-Kumpels Joshua Kimmich und Goretzka drückte die DFB-Elf den ewigen Rivalen immer weiter in die eigene Hälfte. Dann drehte die deutsche Elf zu Höchstformen auf: Zunächst bediente Goretzka den extrem präsenten Tim Kleindienst, der von Alessandro Buongiorno nur mit einem Foul im Strafraum zu stoppen war. Kapitän Kimmich ging beim Elfmeter voran und verwandelteden Strafstoß für das DFB-Team. Kimmich war es auch, der alle Augen auf sich warf. Ein Balljunge warf nach der Parade von Gianluigi Donnarumma geistesgegenwärtig den Ball direkt zu Kimmich. Dieser bemerkte Italiens Unaufmerksamkeit im Strafraum und spielte direkt flach in die Mitte, wo Bayern-Kollege Jamal Musiala freistand und ins leere Tor vollenden konnte. Italien fiel daraufhin in sich zusammen und wurde noch vor der Halbzeit mit einem dritten Gegentreffer bestraft. Nach einer sehenswerten Kombination chippte Kimmich den Ball von rechts in die Mitte, wo Kleindienst seine Lufthoheit ausspielte und zum 3:0 vollendete. Die Pause wirkte im Spiel wie ein ganz harter Bruch. Nach dem Seitenwechsel wich die deutsche Begeisterung plötzlich einer Verunsicherung, die zu einigen Fehlpässen und technischen Patzern führte. Moise Keans erstes Tor für Italien (49.) folgte auf ein unsauberes Zuspiel von Leroy Sané. Der nach dem Wechsel herausragende Angreifer des AC Florenz tanzte 20 Minuten später noch einmal Jonathan Tah aus und schloss trocken zum 2:3 ab (69.). Als Giovanni di Lorenzo wenige Minuten später im Strafraum nach einem Zweikampf mit Nico Schlotterbeck zu Fall kam und Szymon Marciniak auf den Elfmeterpunkt zeigte, wirkte das deutsche Team kurzzeitig in Schockstarre. Marciniak aber kassierte seine Entscheidung nach Sichtung der Videobilder wieder. Um das denkwürdige Comeback innerhalb von 45 Minuten zu schaffen, war Italiens Hypothek nach den ersten drei Halbzeiten zu groß. Seine Hereingabe bekam Jonathan Tah nur unzureichend geklärt, wodurch Sandro Tonali unbedrängt zur Führung einschießen konnte. Während die italienischen Aktionen zielgerichtet wirkten, war in Deutschlands Offensive vorrangig Comebacker Leon Goretzka präsent. Der 30-Jährige setzte einen Kopfball aufs Tornetz (16.) und schloss später mit einem satten Dropkick (20.) ab. Erneut Torschütze Tonali (30.) sowie der agile Moise Kean (32.) hatten bei ihren strammen Abschlüssen das 2:0 auf dem Fuß, scheiterten aber am stark reagierenden Baumann. Und Italien machte das, was es am besten kann: Aus einer kompakten und gut sortierten Fünferkette gefährliche Nadelstiche setzen. Schon nach 45 Minuten hatte Nagelsmann zwei Wechsel vorgenommen - und er lag damit goldrichtig. Tim Kleindienst und Nico Schlotterbeck ersetzten den anfälligen Raum und den unauffälligen Jonathan Burkardt. Mit seiner ersten Aktion bewies Kleindienst seine große Stärke und köpfte präzise an Gianluigi Donnarumma vorbei zum Ausgleich – Joshua Kimmich hatte präzise in die Mitte geflankt. Kleindienst war nicht nur als Torschütze wertvoll, sondern auch als unermüdlich laufender Fußball-Arbeiter. Mit Schlotterbeck statt Raum wirkte das DFB-Spiel nicht nur stabiler, sondern auch flexibler. Kapitän Kimmich schob sich immer wieder nach vorne und kurbelte das Offensivspiel an. Bestnoten in beiden Halbzeiten verdiente sich vor allem Oliver Baumann, der auch nach dem Wechsel einer der stärksten Deutschen war und unter anderem gegen Giacomo Raspadori (67.) mit starker Fußabwehr das zwischenzeitliche Remis wahrte.
