Although both players represented China, a large portion of the crowd strongly supported Sun because of her immense popularity and status as the world No. 1 player. Throughout the match, Sun received much louder cheers, while Chen was met with relative silence when winning points, and some spectators even booed Chen after she secured victory. This overshadowed what should have been a historic achievement, as Chen became one of the few players ever to win back-to-back Olympic singles gold medals. The incident was widely attributed to the rise of "fanquan" (idol-style fan culture) in Chinese sports. Many Sun supporters believed she deserved the Olympic title as the younger star and future face of Chinese table tennis, especially since an Olympic gold would have brought her closer to completing a career Grand Slam. However, there is no evidence that Sun Yingsha encouraged the hostile behavior, and both athletes remained respectful teammates, later helping China win the women's team gold medal.
