The momentum was with the Aussies who also won the toss on a used surface. But once the Kiwis restricted their opponents to 142, it was half the job done you'd think. And then Guptill happened. Any sniff that the Aussies might have had of repeating their heroics from the previous game, was dumped in the bin rather early. The move to open with Conway was a masterstroke, as he and Guptill provided a wicketless, fluent powerplay. The latter then just tore into the bowling, Zampa especially to kill the game. Australia were clearly 15-20 runs short, and maybe, it was a good toss to lose for NZ who were tactically smarter with their selections.

Then a three-over assault from Marcus Stoinis and Daniel Sams gave Australia a chance to pull off a come-from-behind win in chase of 219. Eventually, the hosts walked away with a four-run win and a 2-0 series lead after James Neesham defended 15 in the final over. Martin Guptill returned to form with 97 while Kane Williamson struck a half-century. Neesham (45* off 16) provided the late push with the bat which proved to be just enough for New Zealand to stay ahead.
