ATLANTA, GEORGIA—The playoff run of the Atlanta United FC is over after they suffered a 0-2 defeat at the hands of the home team New York City FC at the Yankee Stadium on Nov. 21 at 3:00 p.m. EST. The visiting United FC played aggressively in the entire game but their efforts were not enough to stop the fourth-seeded New York to advance to the second round of the MLS Eastern Conference playoffs. New York City star striker MLS 2021 Golden Boot winner Valentín Castellanos scored the first goal for his team in the second half. The goal was Castellanos’ seventh in five games. A corner kick also initiated New York City’s second goal. In the 53rd minute, midfielder Maxi Moralez took a shot that hit the crossbar. Defender Alex Callens headed in the rebound to put NYCFC up 2-0. With the win, New York is set to face No. 1 seed and Supporters’ Shield champion New England Revolution in the conference semifinals on November 30. Despite the loss, United FC coach Gonzalo Pineda is still happy with the heart and grit of his team. “Today again was proof for me the heart of the team,” Pineda said. “They never give up. I love when teams don’t give up, even in a game like this. 2-0, playing away. The team showed a lot of character to come back, to try create chances. Even with a man down we were trying to push for the game. Those things for me are valuable, and I’m very proud of the heart of the team in general,” Pineda added. ATLANTA, GEORGIA—The dream of Atlanta United FC to enter the Major League Soccer Eastern Conference playoffs for the fourth time since entering the league in 2017, is now a reality. On November 7, United FC scored a late goal from veteran Venezuelan striker Josef Martinez to beat the home team FC Cincinnati 2-1. The win is United FC’s second all-time come-from-behind road win in club history. With the win, United FC ends the regular season with a playoff spot after finishing in fifth place in the Eastern Conference. In a post-match interview, Martinez is very happy with his game-winning goal in the 79th minute that allowed his team to advance to the playoffs. “I don’t know where that goal came from,” Martínez said. “But I just remembered after that first save he’d made on me, it was a really good chance but he made that save. So, we just had to keep trying to get that goal. And I even said it to coach on the sidelines that it was so important for us to get that goal.” Martinez added. United FC coach Gonzalo Pineda praised Martinez for the late-minute goal. “I’m just very, very happy for him because, again, it was a very hard season for him personally, individually with the injuries,” Pineda said. “Finishing the season with our last great goal, it’s very encouraging for him,” Pineda added. The other goal from United FC was provided by the defender of the Year candidate Miles Robinson in the 70th minute. Robinson’s first career MLS goal came on a header at the center of the box on a cross from midfielder Ezequiel Barco following a corner kick. ATLANTA, GEORGIA—The home team Atlanta United FC has moved to fifth place in the Major League Soccer Eastern Conference playoff race after they ended their regular season homestand with a 1-1 draw against the visiting Toronto FC at the Mercedes Benz Stadium on October 31. The draw gave United FC 47 on the season and into fifth place in the MLS Eastern Conference playoff race. The home team drew first blood and take a 1-0 lead with a goal from Brazilian striker Luiz Araujo in the 15th minute. The goal was Araujo’s fourth of the season in just 13 matches played. He led the team with five chances created on the night. Toronto equalized in the 88th minute. Forward Jordan Perruzza directed a one-touch shot in the center of the box off a header that striker Dom Dwyer sent across the box. The play initially started as a set-piece. With the score tied, United FC tried to come up with another goal to win but their efforts were futile due to the tough defensive stance of Toronto. United FC coach Gonzalo Pineda is sad with the missed chances of his team to score more goals in the game. “Overall the game plan worked, it’s just about not scoring the second goal,” Pineda said. Atlanta United has just two matches remaining, against a surging New York Red Bulls and FC Cincinnati. Both are on the road, and it’ll be vital for Atlanta to come away with positive results. ATLANTA, GEORGIA –Playing at home after a heartbreaking defeat, proved to be a great schedule for Atlanta United FC. On Wednesday night, Atlanta United FC eked out a 1-0 win over the visiting Inter Miami CF at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. As the game seems almost headed to a scoreless draw, United FC’s top veteran striker Josef Martinez scored on a penalty kick in the 78th minute. The goal proved to be the winning score for the team who got a much-needed three points in the tight playoff race in Major League Soccer. Martinez was awarded the penalty shot after a handball was called on Miami defender Leandro González Pirez inside the box. Aside from providing the winning goal for his team, the goal is also special for Martinez since it is his 100th goal for tor the team. “It was destiny that it had to be Josef with a penalty to score his hundredth goal and help us to win as a team,” head coach Gonzalo Pineda said. With the goal, the club’s all-time leading scorer and 2018 MLS Golden Boot winner added more to his legacy. In his 125th appearance, he became the fastest player in MLS history to score 100 goals for his club. “I’m happy because it’s not every day you make 100 goals,” Martinez said. “I want to say thank you to my teammates, the ones that are here and the players that were here before, and everyone working at Atlanta United and also for my city because they mean a lot,” Martinez added. ATLANTA, GEORGIA –Looks like Gonzalo Pineda is starting to imprint his winning culture to the Atlanta United FC. On Saturday, the United FC extended their winning streak to three games with a 3-2 win against the visiting D.C. United at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The home team played like a well-oiled machine as they seek every opportunity to score. Argentinian midfielder Ezequiel Barco was the star for the team in their win by scoring a goal and dishing out one assist. Barco is having the best season of his Atlanta United career. He’s now scored seven goals and six assists, both a career-best in his fourth season in Atlanta. Aside from Barco, the other goals were provided by Josef Martinez and George Bello. Veteran goalkeeper Brad Guzan also played superbly in defense for the team with his timely saves. Pineda is very happy with the performance of his team and he is confident they can do great things this year. “A perfect week,” Pineda said. “Nine points out of nine, scoring 10 goals. I think it was great,” Pineda added. United FC hopes to make it four straight wins when they visit the dangerous Philadelphia FC on September 23 at the Subaru Park. ATLANTA –The coaching debut of Gonzalo Pineda did not end well as planned as the home team Atlanta United FC suffered a 0-2 defeat at the hands of the visiting Nashville SC on Saturday afternoon at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The loss is painful for United FC since their four-game winning streak has also ended. Coming into the game, the United FC is feeling confident with their winning streak and a new coach. However, Nashville SC spoiled the planned victory party for Pineda after the team scored two goals from Daniel Rios and Randall Leal. With their defeat, United FC is once again back on the drawing board to plot its strategy to get back to its winning ways. United FC (6-7-9, 27 points) hopes to regain its winning momentum when they host the Orlando City SC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Friday evening (7:00 p.m., FS1, Sports Radio 92-9 The Game, La Mejor). ATLANTA, GEORGIA— Atlanta United FC star striker Josef Martinez on Tuesday, doused off rumors that he wants to get out of the team and play somewhere else. In a press conference, Venezuela soccer star Martinez said, he loved playing for the city and is very grateful, that the team acquired him. “The first time I came here, I said, this is my club, this is my city and I love to be here,” Martinez said. Martinez added that if given the chance he wants to end his professional soccer career in the MLS soccer club. “I want to retire here. I love this club,” Martinez stated. Rumors have been circulating earlier, that Martinez wants to leave the team due to his reported feud with former coach Gabriel Heinze. Sources said Martinez will play for the team when they visit the home team FC Cincinnati, on July 21 at TQL Stadium. United FC interim head coach Rob Valentino is optimistic his crew can finally get back to its winning ways, especially that Martinez is expected to play in the game. United FC is also confident of a victory against the home team since Cincinnati is also struggling in the ongoing Major League Soccer season. Cincinnati’s defense has unsurprisingly been one of the worst in the league and conceded the second-most goals in the league (25). To defeat the home team, Martinez needs to play his A-game come game-time. Aside from Martinez, newly acquired player striker Amar Sejdic also needs to play well for United FC. If Valentino can come up with a good game plan on Wednesday, there is no reason his team will lose against the home team. ATLANTA, GEORGIA—Sensing urgency with regards to the recent lackluster performance of Atlanta United FC, United FC president Darren Eales has vowed to do some moves to further improve the team. In a recent interview with 92.9 The Game this week, Eales revealed they are set to use the coming transfer window to make some moves to improve the team who is having a hard time winning as of late. “It’s too early in terms of panicking, but that doesn’t mean we’re not going to look to improve the squad,” Eales said. “We’ve got another opportunity with the window coming up and the ability to try to make some moves,” Eales added. Making a move in the transfer window has been a clamor for the team who is currently 10th in the Eastern Conference. In its last game on June 27 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the home team suffered a scoreless draw against the visiting New York Red Bulls. While the team failed to achieve a win, it is still happy since they were able to extend their home unbeaten streak in league play to five matches. Playing in front of its 42,575 fans, the United played solid from the get-go but the Red Bulls defense is just too hard to crack. The visiting Red Bulls also played superbly in the game but United veteran goalkeeper Brad Guzan foiled all their goal attempts. Guzan has a solid performance in the game as he recorded four saves to post his third clean sheet of the regular season. United (2-2-6, 12 points) hopes to get back to its winning ways when they visit Chicago Fire FC at Soldier Field on July 3 (8:00 p.m. ET, Bally Sports South, Sports Radio 92-9 The Game, La Mejor). https://atlantasoccer.news/atlanta-united-fc-prexy-vow-to-make-some-moves-to-further-improve-team/ #AtlantaUnited2FC #AtlantaUnited2 #soccer #MLS #MajorLeagueSoccer #Atlantasoccernews #Atlantasoccer #AtlantaUnited #ChicagoFire #DarrenEales #MajorLeagueSoccer #mls #NewYorkRedBulls #SoldierField
