In one of the worst Penn State football seasons under Joe Paterno up to that current time, the Nittany Lions capped it off in a very positive way, with a fine outing against a talented Michigan State team. The offense jumped on the Spartans right from the get-go. Aided by the defense, as three of Michigan State's first seven plays from scrimmage resulted in quarterback sacks. The blue and white would pile of 8 total sacks on the day. Lion senior quarterback Rashard Casey played one of his best games to close out his career, and there were other big time plays from underclassmen such as Larry Johnson, Omar Easy and Eric McCoo. This one felt more like the Penn State of old that fans had grown accustomed to throughout the decade of the 90's. Penn State's Top Performers: Rashard Casey: 11/16, 218 yards, 3 TDs ... 11 carries, 42 yards, 2 TDs Larry Johnson: 10 carries, 93 yards, TD Eric McCoo: 15 carries, 71 yards, TD .. 1 reception, 31 yards, TD The Nittany Lions finished the season with a 5-7 record, which placed them 7th in the Big Ten standings. Michigan State posted a final record of 5-6 with the loss, but ended up with a 10th place finish within the Big Ten that year.
Penn State trounced the Temple Owls in this early season meeting, which took place back in Giant Stadium. It was the second time Penn State played a game there in four weeks (defeating USC in week 1). Wally Richardson had the offense humming, with a good balance between the run and pass. Curtis Enis and Aaron Harris took turns burning the Owls in the ground game while Richardson often looked for his tight ends in the pass game. Defensively, the Lions were great, pitching a shutout for the second consecutive game. They got after the Temple quarterback in a big way and caused a few turnovers. Penn State's Top Performers: Curtis Enis: 14 carries, 91 yards, TD Brandon Noble: 3 quarterback sacks Aaron Harris: 2 rushing TDs Penn State sits at 4-0 after this win over Temple. The Owls had a record of 1-3, and finished 1996 without winning another game for a 1-11 mark.
What turned out to be the second best team in the Pac-10 in 1994 traveled cross-country for a showdown with a dangerous Penn State team in week 2. The Nittany Lions jumped all over USC and had 14 points on the board before the Trojans could even run three offensive plays. The offense was flawless in the first half, and the 35-0 halftime score exemplified it all. If it weren't for a dropped pass, and a long ball that was just a bit overthrown, you would have seen Penn State score 52 points, easy. And that's despite the two interceptions thrown by Collins in the third quarter. All-in-all, USC did not show up for this one and were lucky the score didn't look much worse than it ended up being. Penn State's Top Performers: Kerry Collins: 18 of 33, 248 yards, 2 TD passes Ki-Jana Carter: 17 carries, 119 yards, TD Freddie Scott: 6 catches, 133 yards, TD Penn State nabbed it's second win of the season and began to prepare for Iowa in the following week while USC checked in at 1-1 for the year with the loss. The Trojans ended 1994 with an 8-3-1 record, finishing second in the Pac-10 and beating Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl.
It was the legendary game late in 1995 that was played between the snow hedges, by two powerhouses which was only made possible because of the work of local inmates helping to shovel Beaver Stadium! It featured big time football and the famous incident where a Michigan wide receiver got hit in the face with a snowball thrown by a fan. For college football fans, the game didn't disappoint. And for the home crowd, the result was satisfying! Heavy blows were exchanged in this one from both teams, and after a scoreless first quarter, the Nittany Lions took the lead in the second, and spent the remainder of the game staying just ahead of the Wolverines. What an atmosphere! What a game! Penn State Top Performers: Bobby Engram: 5 catches, 84 yards, 1 TD Stephen Pitts: 17 carries, 163 yards Penn State secured its 7th win of the year over Michigan with only two games left in the regular season. The Wolverines dropped to 8-2 with the loss and would finish 1995 with a 9-4 record a bowl loss to Texas A&M in the Alamo Bowl.
Penn State's first ever game as a member of the Big Ten conference, opened the 1993 football season against Minnesota.
