Graduate student Xavier Johnson led the Vaqueros (3-2) with a season-high 20 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including 3-of-4 shooting from behind the arc. Junior Ricky "Doc" Nelson scored 15 points with four rebounds. Graduate student Marek Nelson scored 13 points. Junior Justin Johnson scored 11 points with five rebounds and four assists. Freshman Donte Houston Jr. and graduate student Mike Adewunmi each scored eight points with three rebounds. Freshman RayQuan Taylor finished with seven points and eight rebounds. The Vaqueros went a season-best 9-for-15 (60%) from behind the arc. Jalen Cone led the Lumberjacks (3-3) with 29 points. Nik Mains scored 17 points with five rebounds. Keith Haymon scored 15 points with four rebounds. The Lumberjacks led 79-78 with 1:16 remaining. A few seconds later, Doc Nelson drove the lane for a layup to give the Vaqueros the lead. A Carson Towt free throw tied the game with 34 seconds left. On the ensuing possession, Justin Johnson drove to the basket and missed a layup, but Houston grabbed the rebound and put the ball in the net to give the Vaqueros the lead with 3.8 seconds remaining. Haymon missed a three as time expired to end the game. The Lumberjacks led early in the game, going up 16-11 five minutes into the game and still leading 26-24 with 8:35 remaining in the first. That's when Marek Nelson made a three and Adewunmi knocked down a layup to give the Vaqueros the lead. Then, with the score tied at 31, Taylor sunk a layup and Marek Nelson came up with a steal that led to a fastbreak dunk to spark a 14-5 run that put the Vaqueros up 45-36. The Vaqueros scored the final five points of the half, going up 52-40 on a runner by Doc Nelson. The Lumberjacks scored the first six points of the second half as part of a 9-2 run. Then, after layups by Adewunmi and Justin Johnson put the Vaqueros up 58-49, the Lumberjacks went on a 10-1 run to tie the game at 59. Xavier Johnson responded with a pair of free throws and a driving layup to restore the Vaqueros' lead at 63-59. The Lumberjacks regained the lead at 66-65 before Doc Nelson hit a pair of free throws and Marek Nelson sunk a three to put the Vaqueros up 70-66. The Vaqueros still led by four when a Houston layup made the score 78-74, but the Lumberjacks scored the next five points to take their last lead at 79-78. UTRGV faces Cal State Fullerton at the Rolle Activity Center on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in game that will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Oct. 21, 2021 - RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team won its home opener, 74-70 over the McNeese Cowgirls on Sunday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Sophomore Sara Bershers led the Vaqueros (1-3) by posting her first double-double of the season and third of her career with a career-high 29 points and a career-high tying 13 rebounds. Bershers went a career-high 6-for-10 from behind the arc. Graduate student Taylor Muff scored a career-high 23 points on 11-of-17 shooting with seven rebounds. Freshman Brooke Jessen scored a career-high 12 points with five rebounds and a career-high three assists. Desirae Hansen led the Cowgirls (2-2) with 23 points on six three-pointers and seven rebounds. Cristina Gill scored 13 points with four assists. The game was tied at 4 three minutes into the first quarter when junior Jessica Martino made a layup and Muff followed with back-to-back baskets as part of a 7-0 to give the Vaqueros the lead. Then, with the score 11-8, a Muff jumper and a Martino layup put the Vaqueros up 15-8 at the end of the quarter. The Vaqueros pushed their lead to 20-11 early in the second on a Bershers three before the Cowgirls went on a 7-1 run to climb within 21-18. Bershers responded with a three as the Vaqueros scored seven-straight points to go up 28-18. Then, with the score 32-25, Bershers hit back-to-back three-pointers to put the Vaqueros up 38-25. The Vaqueros led 43-36 early in the third quarter when Bershers, Jessen and Muff hit baskets to put the Vaqueros up 49-36. The Cowgirls got as close as 10 at 51-41, but the Vaqueros responded with an 11-2 run to take a 62-43 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Cowgirls answered with an 25-7 run to pull within 69-68 with 29 seconds remaining. Bershers hit two free throws before Gil made a layup to make the score 71-70 with 10 seconds left. Jessen hit two free throws with two seconds left and Bershers made one with 0.8 seconds on the clock to put the game on ice. UTRGV is back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. against future Western Athletic Conference opponent Southern Utah at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Oct. 16, 2021 - RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team beat the Paul Quinn College Tigers 85-68 on Tuesday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Junior Justin Johnson led the Vaqueros (2-1) with a career-high 18 points and seven rebounds. Junior Ricky “Doc” Nelson scored 16 points with four assists. Graduate student Marek Nelson scored 15 points with six rebounds and one block. Graduate student Mike Adewunmi scored 13 points with nine rebounds and two blocks. Junior LaQuan Butler posted his first-career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 10 assists. Chris Scaife led the Tigers (3-2) with 15 points. Ja’Mere Redus scored 10 points with three steals. The game was tight for the first six minutes, with the Tigers taking a 9-8 lead. An alley-oop to freshman Donte Houston Jr. sparked a 10-0 run to put the Vaqueros up 18-9. The Tigers scored six of the next eight points before Adewunmi connected on a layup and a free throw to kick off a 19-4 run to put the Vaqueros up 39-19. The Vaqueros and Tigers traded baskets for the first few minutes of the second half before a layup by freshman RayQuan Taylor sparked a 7-0 run to put the Vaqueros up 61-33, marking their largest lead of the game. UTRGV hosts Northern Arizona for the inaugural UTRGV South Padre Island Battle on the Beach on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the South Padre Island Convention Centre. UTRGV (17-9, 8-4 WAC) opens the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament, hosted by New Mexico State, on Thursday. The bracket is expected to be announced following the conclusion of play on Saturday. Fans can watch in the United States on ESPN+ or internationally on the WAC Digital Network. Junior Sarah Cruz led the Vaqueros with 14 kills and 12 digs for her ninth double-double. In her final home match, senior Veronika Jandova recorded 10 kills and two blocks. Sophomore Ioanna Charitonidi finished with eight kills on .333 hitting and eight digs. Freshman Luanna Emiliano posted her 21st double-double with 33 assists and 15 digs. Lindsey Toney led the Wildcats (9-14, 3-9 WAC) with 13 kills, two aces and two blocks. Down 2-0 to start the first set the, the Vaqueros scored seven-straight points as part of a 9-1 run, capped by a Charitonidi kill, to take a 9-3 lead. The Wildcats got as close as 7-11 before a pair of kills by freshman Perris Key powered a 5-0 run to push the set out of reach. The Vaqueros led 5-2 on a kill by sophomore Luisa Silva Dos Santos at the start of the second set. The Wildcats responded with an 8-0 run and still led 13-8 when three-straight Cruz kills sparked a 7-0 run to give the Vaqueros a 15-13 lead. The Wildcats scored the next three points to go up 16-15. The Vaqueros scored the next two points and then the two teams traded points for much of the rest of the set. The Wildcats reached set point at 24-23 before an attack error tied the set, a Santos ace gave the Vaqueros set point, and an attack error ended the set. Cruz opened the third set with a kill as the Vaqueros took a 5-1 lead. The Wildcats came back to tie the set at 6 before a Jandova kill and an ace by junior Yasmim da Silva put the Vaqueros back on top. After trading points for nine serves, the Wildcats tied the set at 12. The Vaqueros scored the next three points to take a 15-12 lead on a block by Jandova and Key. Three serves later, the Vaqueros went on a 7-1 run, capped by a Cruz kill, to take a 23-15 lead. Then, on match point, Jandova made the most of her final touch at home, blocking an attack to win the match.
Oct. 11, 2021 - RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros volleyball team beat the Tarleton Texans 3-1 (25-20, 25-13, 24-26, 25-18) on Thursday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Junior Sarah Cruz led the Vaqueros (16-9, 7-4 WAC) with 23 kills, nine digs, four blocks and three aces. Senior Veronika Jandova posted 12 kills and two blocks. Sophomore Luisa Silva Dos Santos recorded 10 kills and four blocks. Freshman Luanna Emiliano posted her 20th double-double with 44 assists, 19 digs and three blocks. Lauren Kersey led the Texans (14-14, 5-6 WAC) with 10 kills and five digs. The Texans led for much of the early going in the first set, going up 18-14. Kills by sophomore Ioanna Charitonidi and Cruz brought the Vaqueros within two. One serve later, with the score 16-19, Cruz came up with kills to bookend an 8-0 run to give the Vaqueros set point. One serve after that, a Cruz kill ended the set. Jandova came up with kills to start and end a 7-2 run to start the second set. The Texans won the next three serves to pull to within two. Then, with the score 11-7, Cruz recorded back-to-back kills to spark a 6-0 run to put the Vaqueros up 10 and push the set out of reach. After dropping the third set, the Vaqueros jumped out to a 13-5 lead in set four. The Texans responded with a 5-1 run to make the score 10-14, but four Jandova kills and two Cruz aces powered an 8-4 run to put the Vaqueros up 22-14 and push the set out of reach. Junior Sarah Cruz led the Vaqueros (15-9, 6-4 WAC) with 14 kills on .321 hitting and eight digs. Freshman Perris Key made her first collegiate start at middle blocker, recording six kills on .500 hitting with two aces and one block. Freshman Ingridy Foltran finished with six kills on .750 hitting. Freshman Luanna Emiliano posted her 19th double-double with 32 assists, 10 digs and three aces. Paige Dugan led the Cardinals (4-20, 0-10 WAC) with nine kills. The first set was tight early, with the Cardinals taking the first multi-point lead at 8-5. Sophomore Ioanna Charitonidi followed with a kill to spark a set-tying 3-0 run. Then, with the Cardinals up 11-10, a Key kill started a 3-0 run to give the Vaqueros their first multi-point lead at 13-11. The Cardinals got as close as 19-20 before the Vaqueros closed the set on a 5-1 run, including two kills and an ace by Cruz. The Cardinals led at the start of set two, going up 7-6. The set was also tied at 9. That’s when back-to-back Cruz kills sparked a 10-2 run to put the Vaqueros up 19-11. Then, with the score 21-14, Key came up with a kill and an ace and then Cruz recorded a kill to bring the Vaqueros to set point. Two serves later, a Cruz kill ended the set. The Vaqueros jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the third set. Then, with the score 5-3, a kill by freshman Ada Bulgur sparked a 7-1 run to put the Vaqueros up 12-4. Then, with the score 14-6, the Vaqueros went on a 7-0 run, capped by a Bulgur kill, to push the set out of reach. Oct. 16, 2021 - RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros volleyball team knocked off the previously undefeated in Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play Sam Houston Bearkats 3-2 (25-16, 21-25, 25-21, 27-29, 15-12) to pull into a tie for first place in the WAC Southwest Division on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse in front of an exuberant crowd of 823. The Vaqueros (12-6, 4-1 WAC) are now on a four-match winning streak and tied for first with the Bearkats (11-6, 4-1 WAC). The win was also head coach Todd Lowery’s 100th at UTRGV. Now in his seventh season, Lowery is now 100-92 (.521) at UTRGV and 516-128 (.801) for his career. Junior Sarah Cruz led the Vaqueros with 20 kills, eight digs and four blocks. Sophomore Maria Eduarda Rodrigues recorded a career-high tying 10 kills and a career-high seven blocks. Sophomore Ioanna Charitonidi posted her second double-double of the season with 10 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore Luisa Silva Dos Santos finished with six kills and seven blocks. Senior Veronika Jandova recorded six kills and six blocks. Freshman Luanna Emiliano posted her 14th double-double with 43 assists and 18 digs. Breanne Chausse led the Bearkats with 19 kills and eight digs and four blocks. Ashley Lewis recorded 15 kills and 19 digs. The Bearkats got as close as 11-12 and were within 14-16 when a Charitonidi kill sparked a 5-0 run to put the Vaqueros up 21-14. Three serves later, with the score 22-16, the Vaqueros went on a 3-0 run, capped by back-to-back blocks by Santos and Rodrigues, to end the set. The Bearkats got off to a strong start in set two, going up 10-6. The Vaqueros scored the next three points to pull within one. Then, with the score 11-14, the Vaqueros went on a 4-0 run, capped by a block by Emiliano and Jandova, to go up 15-14. The Bearkats, however, scored the next three points to take the lead for good. The Bearkats led 4-3 early in the third set before a Cruz kill started a 9-3 run to put the Vaqueros up 12-7. The Bearkats won the next three serves before the Vaqueros responded with a 6-1 run to go up 18-11. The Bearkats scored the next three points. Then, with the score 21-16, the Vaqueros scored four of the next six points to reach set point. Three serves later, a Cruz kill ended the set. The fourth set was tight most of the way. The score tied at 7 when a Cruz kill sparked a 4-0 run to give the Vaqueros an 11-7 lead. The Bearkats responded with a 10-4 run to take a 17-15 lead. The Vaqueros came back to tie the set at 17 on an ace by freshman Edinburg North alum Evana Ramos. The teams traded points until kills by Jandova and Cruz put the Vaqueros up 23-22. The Vaqueros reached match points four times, at 24-23 on a Cruz kill, 25-24 on an Emiliano kill, 26-25 on an error and 27-26 on a Charitonidi kill before the Bearkats won three-straight serves to take the set. The Vaqueros jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the fifth set on a Charitonidi kill. Later, with the score tied at 7, Cruz came up with three-straight kills as part of a 6-1 run to put the Vaqueros up 13-8. The Bearkats responded by winning the next four serves, but Cruz and Rodriguez answered with kills to end the match. UTRGV plays its next two matches at Lamar, with contests against Seattle U Friday at 1 p.m. and Chicago State Saturday at 1 p.m.

Junior Sarah Cruz led the Vaqueros (9-6, 1-1 WAC) with 12 kills on .524 hitting and three blocks. Sophomore Luisa Silva Dos Santos recorded nine kills on .600 hitting and a career-high eighth blocks. Senior Veronika Jandova finished with six kills on .500 hitting. Freshman Luanna Emiliano dished out 27 assists. Amber Johnson led the Cardinals (4-11, 0-1 WAC) with seven kills. Sophomore Maria Eduarda Rodrigues and Santos came up with a pair of early kills to help the Vaqueros jump out to a 4-1 lead in the first set. Then, with the score 5-3, a kill by sophomore Ioanna Charitonidi sparked a 6-1 run to put the Vaqueros up 11-4. The Cardinals won the next three serves and were still close at 12-17 when a Santos kill started an 8-2 run to end the set. The second set was tight early, but with the score tied at 6, a pair of Cruz kills fueled a 7-0 run to put the Vaqueros up 13-6. Then, with the score 13-8, the Vaqueros went on another 7-0 run, capped by a Rodrigues kill, to go up 20-8 and push the set out of reach. The third set was tight early as well, but with the score tied at 5, freshman Perris Key came up with a kill and an ace to spark a 10-3 run to put the Vaqueros up 15-8. The Cardinals followed with 3-0 run before the Vaqueros scored three-straight points to go up 18-11. One serve later, the Vaqueros went on a 7-2 run, capped by a Santos block, to end the match.
