https://goutrgv.com/news/2021/12/11/womens-basketball-earns-second-straight-victory.aspx Dec. 11, 2021 – RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team won their second-straight game by beating the Incarnate Word Cardinals 62-57 on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse Sophomore Sara Bershers led the Vaqueros (3-5) with 27 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Graduate student Taylor Muff scored 12 points with nine rebounds. Jaaucklyn Moore led the Cardinals (3-4) with 30 points with three steals. The Vaqueros hit five of their first eight shots, capped by a layup and three by Bershers, to jump out to an 11-2 lead. The Cardinals responded with a 9-2 run to pull within 13-11. The game stayed tight for the rest of the half. The Vaqueros went up by as much as five at 18-13 on a Bershers free throw early in the second quarter, but the Cardinals took their first lead at 28-27 late in the quarter. The Cardinals extended their lead to 33-29 before a Bershers three made the score 33-32 at halftime. Down 34-32 early in the third quarter, the Vaqueros went on an 11-3 run, capped by a pair of Bershers free throws, to take a 43-37 lead. The Cardinals followed with a 7-2 run to pull within 45-44 before the Vaqueros went on a 6-1 run, punctuated by a layup by sophomore Jena’ Williams, to make the score 51-45. The Cardinals answered with an 8-3 run to climb within 54-53. The Vaqueros scored the next five points to go up 59-53 before a pair of free throws and a jumper by Moore made the score 59-57 with 26.7 seconds remaining. Bershers went to the line 10 seconds later and hit the first shot. She missed the second, but Muff grabbed the rebound, got fouled, and hit two free throws to complete the scoring. UTRGV is back in action on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Bert Ogden Arena against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union. UTRGV Athletics is partnering with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Edinburg to host a Toy Drive at Saturday's game. Fans who donate an unwrapped toy for a boy or girl between the ages of 6-17 get a free general admission ticket. Doors open at 12 p.m.

The Vaqueros (2-5) shot a season-best 42.3% from behind the arc, going 11-for-26. Sophomore Jena' Williams hit a career-high four three-pointers for 13 points with four assists, three rebounds and one steal. After making just one three-pointer during the first five games of the season, Williams now has six three-pointers over the last two. Sophomore Sara Bershers hit a trio of three-pointers en route to 23 points, eight rebounds, a season-high four assists, and two steals. Graduate student Taylor Muff scored 10 points with seven rebounds. Sophomore Maria Llorente finished with eight points, four assists and three steals. Dee Collins led the Huskies (3-6) with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Julija Vujakovic scored 12 points with three steals. Marilyn Nzoiwu scored 10 points with 14 rebounds and five blocks. Williams hit a pair of three-pointers as the Vaqueros jumped out to an 8-2 lead. The Huskies responded with a 7-2 run to pull within one before freshman KaCee Kyle made a three and Bershers knocked down a layup to make the score 15-9. The Vaqueros' lead was 18-15 at the start of the second quarter when Bershers hit two turnaround jumpers and a pair of free throws to push the Vaqueros' lead to 24-15. The Huskies scored the next six points to climb to within three, but with the score 26-23, the Vaqueros went on a 10-4 run, capped by a Bershers three, to take a 36-27 halftime lead. The Huskies pulled back to within six early in the third before a Llorente layup and a Bershers three put the Vaqueros up 44-33. The Vaqueros and Huskies traded baskets until midway through the fourth quarter, when, with the Vaqueros up 57-49, a Muff layup sparked an 8-0 run to put the Vaqueros up 65-49 and push the game out of reach. UTRGV is back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. against future Western Athletic Conference-opponent Incarnate Word at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Making their second postseason appearance and first since competing in the 2016 NCAA Tournament, this was the latest in the calendar year that the Vaqueros had ever competed by one day compared to the 2016 postseason appearance. Junior Sarah Cruz led the Vaqueros (17-11) with 12 kills and three digs. Freshman Perris Key recorded four kills and five digs. Senior Veronika Jandova finishes her career ranked third in program history in hitting percentage (.279), career blocks per set (0.83), fourth in block assists (264), and seventh in total blocks (309). For the season, Jandova hit .293, the second-highest single season total in program history. Cruz finishes this season averaging a program record 4.37 kills per set on 437 total kills, the sixth-highest total. Freshman Luanna Emiliano finishes the season averaging 9.88 assists per set, the sixth-highest single-season total in program history, on 1,057 total assists, the seventh-highest total and second among freshmen. She also ranks third among freshmen in program history with 345 digs and tied for fifth in aces with 37. Freshman Edinburg North alumEvana Ramos finished second among freshmen with 404 digs. Sophomore Luisa Silva Dos Santos finishes the season averaging 0.96 blocks per set, the eight-best total in program history, on 100 total blocks, which 10th, including 85 block assists, which is eighth. Jaelyn Hodge led the Wildcats (17-15) with 12 kills on .385 hitting. Puk Stubbe finished with 10 kills on .389 hitting. In the opening the set, the score was tied at 6 when an error gave the Vaqueros the lead and then a pair of Ramos aces helped the Vaqueros score four in a row as part of a 9-3 run to go up 15-9 on a Cruz ace. The Vaqueros still led by six at 16-10 when the Wildcats won back-to-back serves as part of an 8-2 run to tie the set at 18. After a timeout, the Vaqueros scored three-straight points, going up 22-19 on a Key kill. The Vaqueros reached set point at 24-21 on a kill by sophomore Ioanna Charitonidi before the Wildcats scored five in a row to come back and win the set. The Vaqueros jumped out to a 5-4 lead in the second set on a kill by freshman Ingridy Foltran. The set was still tied at nine on an error before the Wildcats went on an 8-2 run to take control of the set. The Vaqueros were within 3-4 early in the third set before a 7-1 run put the Wildcats up 11-4. Three Cruz kills helped the Vaqueros go on a 5-1 run to pull within 9-12, but that's as close as they got.
Dec. 3, 2021 - AUSTIN – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team fell to the Texas Longhorns 88-58 on Friday at the Frank Erwin Center. Freshman RayQuan Taylor led the Vaqueros (4-5) with a career-high 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting and a career-high nine rebounds. Junior Justin Johnson scored 12 points with six rebounds and two assists. Graduate student Mike Adewunmi scored 10 points with five rebounds, two steals and a career-high tying three blocks. Junior LaQuan Butler scored nine points. Junior Ricky “Doc” Nelson scored six points with three rebounds and three assists. Freshman Donte Houston Jr. finished with six points and three rebounds. Christian Bishop led the Longhorns (6-1) with 17 points, three rebounds and two steals. Tre Mitchell scored 13 points with five rebounds, five assists and two steals. Timmy Allen scored 13 points with three rebounds. Marcus Carr scored 11 points with four assists and two steals. The Longhorns jumped out to a 21-9 lead over the opening six minutes. A Taylor three, however, sparked a 13-6 run, capped by an Adewunmi three-point play, to bring the Vaqueros to within 27-22 midway through the first half. The Longhorns responded with a 12-4 run to go up 39-24, but the Vaqueros answered with a 13-5 run, capped by a Butler three, to pull within 44-39. Taylor closed the half with a layup to bring the Vaqueros within 46-41. The Longhorns scored the first six points of the second half as part of a 33-5 run to go up 79-46 and push the game out of reach. UTRGV visits Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, on Wednesday at 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
Oct. 27, 2021 - RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team fell to the future Western Athletic Conference (WAC) opponent Southern Utah Thunderbirds 80-67 on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Sophomore Sara Bershers led the Vaqueros (1-4) with 23 points, five rebounds, three assists and a career-high tying three steals. She also went a career-best 9-for-9 from the foul line. Graduate student Taylor Muff posted her first-career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore Maria Llorente scored nine points with a career-high tying three rebounds, a career-high five assists, and a career-high four steals. Lizzy Williamson led the Thunderbirds (2-4) with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Samantha Johnston scored 12 points while hitting four three-pointers. Darri Dotson finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists. The Thunderbirds jumped out to an 8-2 lead before a Burcu Soysal jumper and a Tiffany McGarity layup brought the Vaqueros to within two. The Thunderbirds responded with a 9-2 run to go up 17-8. The Thunderbirds led 22-14 early in the second quarter when Bershers hit a three and a jumper and Muff followed with a three and a layup to fuel a 10-0 run to put the Vaqueros up 24-22. Midway through the second quarter, with the score tied at 29, a Soysal jumper and a Llorente three-point play put the Vaqueros up 34-29. The Thunderbirds scored the first eight points of the third quarter to punctuate a 10-0 run and take a 41-36 lead. A Muff three sparked a 7-2 run to tie the game at 43 before the Thunderbirds went on a 13-0 run to go up 56-43. The Thunderbirds led 65-53 with 7:30 remaining in the fourth quarter. Freshman KaCee Kyle hit a three-pointer and then Bershers converted a three-point play as the Vaqueros went on a 10-0 run to pull within 65-63. The Thunderbirds, however, outscored the Vaqueros 15-4 over the final 5:20 to put the game on ice. UTRGV is back in action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Kansas in a game that will be broadcast on Big 12 Now via ESPN+.
